13 S T E P 1 Display Plug-in Module CS-U Contr ol Panel All scanning operations are performed with the Plug-in Module CS-U contr ol panel. T o quit Plug-in Module CS-U, click the close box at the top left of the contr ol panel. Menu Bar Click any menu item to display more options in a pull-down menu.
14 S T E P 1 Import Operating P r ocedu r es V erify that the scanner is attached to your computer p r operl y . Start Canon Photo or Photoshop. Select Plug-in Module CS-U f r om within Canon Photo or Photoshop. The Plug-in Module CS-U cont r ol panel will appea r .
15 S T E P 1 Y ou can pre-scan the original befor e it is actually scanned and acquired by the parent application. Because the pre-scanned image is temporary , the entire platen is scanned. The pre-scanned image is displayed in the pr eview window where the quality of the image can be adjusted or cropped for actual scanning.
16 S T E P 1 Unit Specifies the units that define the size of the scanned image. Set Pr eferences Y ou can set prefer ences for the operating environment which will be used for every scanning job until you change them. Some of these settings include units of measure for the display , basic resolution, size of the pr eview window .
17 S T E P 1 Setting Basic Resolution The resolution setting sets the output r esolution for printing and displaying the image. If you select the [Other] button you can enter the resolution setting (12 to 9600) directly into the entry box.
18 S T E P 1 Caution • Changing the Preview window size will cause the image previously displayed in the Preview window to disappear . • The maximum size of the area that you can specify depends on the size and other characteristics of your monitor .
19 S T E P 1 Procedur es Select the [Prefs] menu in the contr ol panel. The Settings pull-down menu will display . Select the desired option fr om the pull-down menu. • Selecting any one of the Units, Basic Resolution or Pr eview W indow options displays the respective dialog for it.
20 S T E P 1 The magnification of an image can be changed before scanning to accommodate repr oductions that are larger or smaller than the original. The settings can be changed in increments of 1%.
21 S T E P 1 T o Set the Magnification Factor Set the desired magnification factor on the contr ol panel. Hint The Relationship Between Data V olume and Scanning Resolution The higher the magnification and scanning resolution settings, the greater the file size of scanned images.
22 S T E P 1 When an image is scanned, it is read as a collection of “dots.” The scan mode that is selected determines how each of these dots is repr esented in the output. The following five scan modes are available. Black & White Displays each dot as either black or white.
23 S T E P 1 Color In the Color mode, each dot is formed by assigning it eight individual bits of data to repr esent each of the RGB or red, gr een and blue colors, which add up to 24 bits. In this mode, a dot can be expressed in appr oximately 16,770,000 distinct shades.
24 S T E P 1 Hint Scanning the same image in the three different scan modes produces dif ferent file sizes. By size, Black & White mode requires the least disk space, followed in order by the Grayscale mode and the Color mode. Before scanning, check the data volume indicator on the control panel.
25 S T E P 1 Before initiating the final scan, it is advisable to check the intended r esults with the Browser function. The image in the Br owser window is more accurate than the one in the Preview window , allowing you to verify the results mor e precisely befor e scanning.
26 S T E P 1 Click the mouse button when the Selection Frame is in the correct position. • The image will be read and the br owser image displayed in the middle of the monitor . Once you have examined the browser image, click the mouse button again to close the Browser window .

28 S T E P 2 Using the image in the preview window , you can define the actual ar ea to be scanned. Operating Procedur es Position the pointer in the preview window . The + symbol marks the current position of the pointer . Click the mouse button and drag the mouse in the dir ection you want to define on the image as a frame.
29 S T E P 2 Y ou can specify a selected area of the image for enlargement with the Zoom features. Y ou can use the zoom function to select an ar ea with high precision, or to select small areas for scanning. T o Zoom In Select the area you want to enlarge with the zoom function.
30 S T E P 2 Click the [Zoom In] button [ ]. The selected area will be displayed in expanded form. If you want to enlarge the image again, r educe the size of the area selected with the frame and click the [Zoom In] button again. T o r etur n to normal view , click the [Zoom Out] button [ ].
31 S T E P 2 Once you have set the magnification and scan mode, you may p r oceed with the scan. Once the scan is complete, Plug-in Module CS-U automatically closes and r eturns to the application softwa r e, such as Canon Photo. The following p r ovides an example of scanning f r om within Canon Photo.
32 S T E P 2 After an image has been scanned, the data should be saved in a file to a disk using Canon Photo. T o Save an Image After the scan is complete, save the image in Canon Photo. Specify the folder and file name that you wish to use for the image in the Save this document as: dialog box.
33 Adjusting and Editing Scanned Images Scanned images may be corrected for brightness and color tone or edited in a variety of ways. The potential adjustments vary with the type of scan mode utilized in the original scan. Adjustments to the scanned image may be made after the image is previewed.
34 S T E P 3 The data comprising an image contains a variety of brightness settings ranging fr om shadows to highlights. These settings are r epresented in Plug-in Module CS-U by values ranging between 0 and 255. The differ ence in these values determines the image’ s contrast.
35 S T E P 3 T o Adjust a Histogram Specify the area of the image (the entir e area to be scanned) for which a histogram will be generated. See Scan Area Settings (p. 28) . The histogram will not display correctly if an extr emely small area is selected.
36 S T E P 3 An image scanned with Plug-in Module CS-U is a composite of individual squar e dots. Each dot contains information that defines its level of brightness. Plug-in Module CS-U can manipulate this data and repr oduce adjusted images on the screen.
37 S T E P 3 The Relationship Between the Gamma Curve and Image Brightness Gamma curve values fall with a range of 1 to 255. A gamma value of 1 appears as a straight line in the gamma graph, and if the value is any value other than one, the line on the gamma graph will appear curved.
38 S T E P 3 Y ou can adjust the gamma curve with two slide bars, one for contrast and one for brightness. Use this method to adjust an image before scanning if it is slightly out of focus or too dark. Hint Y ou cannot use this feature with a Black & White (Line), color or high definition color file that has been set with ColorSync™.
39 S T E P 3 T o Adjust the Brightness and Contrast [ ] Click the [Gamma] button. The Color Correction dialog opens. Click the check box for Slider Setting then use the slider bar to set the brightness and contrast. Click the [OK] button. The image in the preview windows immediately r eflects the changes.
40 S T E P 3 Adjusting Gamma with the Menu [ ] Y ou can select the display type with the menu and set the gamma curve. Use this feature when you see the brightness of the original image does not match the brightness of the image in the preview window or br owser .
41 S T E P 3 T o Change the Gamma V alue Settings [ ] Click the [Gamma] button. The Color Correction dialog box opens. Click the radio button for Menu Setting. Click the [OK] button. The image in the preview window changes to r eflect the change in this setting.
42 S T E P 3 [ ] Y ou can also set up the gamma curve by directly entering the gamma value (0.01- 10.00). Use this method when you cannot adjust the gamma value with the menu (p. 40) . Hint • Y ou cannot use this feature with a Black & White (Line), color or high definition color file that has been set with ColorSync.
43 S T E P 3 T o Change the Gamma V alue Settings [ ] Click the [Gamma] button. The Color Correction dialog box opens. Click the radio button for Gamma V alue Setting and set the gamma value. Click the [OK] button. The image in the preview window changes to r eflect the change in this setting.
44 S T E P 3 Unadjusted Gamma Curve If you want to increase the light areas ... Drag the mid-tones of the input side (scanned image) into the highlights of the output side (displayed image) If you want reverse the shadows and highlights ... Reverse the starting and end points of the line to reverse shadows and highlights.
45 S T E P 3 T o Edit the T one Curve [ ] Click the [Gamma] button. The Color Correction dialog box opens. Click the radio button for T one Curve and adjust the gamma setting. Click the [OK] button. The image in the preview window changes to r eflect the new settings.
46 S T E P 3 When the scan mode is set to color and high definition Color , color correction is automatically conducted by the ColorSync™ function. The ColorSync™ function automatically matches the tones produced and displayed by scanners, displays and color printers.
47 S T E P 3 Descr een Moiré patter ns occasionally appear when items printed at low r esolutions are scanned. Moiré patter ns ar e dot-like patterns that interfere with processing images for professional use and ar e usually caused by poor dithering resulting from scanning images from newspapers, books, magazines, etc.
48 S T E P 3 When the scan mode is set to Black & White (Line), the image brightness can be adjusted. The threshold value setting determines whether a half tone will be expr essed as a black or a white data point. The possible threshold values range between 1 and 255.
49 S T E P 3 The scan mode, resolution and preference settings can be saved to a settings file and recalled for futur e processing. The user may freely assign a name to the settings file. It is convenient to save frequently used settings in a file. Hint In addition to settings, the settings file may also be used to store preview images.
50 S T E P 3 T o Recall a Settings File Click the [File] menu in the control panel and select the [Load] option. Specify the file to open. Click the [Open] button. The settings in the operation panel are r eplaced by the savings stored in the settings file.
51 S T E P 3 Editing Scanned Images Scanned images can be edited as r equi r ed using Canon Photo and Photoshop®. In this example, we p r ovide a simple demonstration of how to use the filter functions of Kai ’ s Power T ools ® , a plug-in module for Photoshop ® .
52 S T E P 3 Scanning T echniques Matching Scan Resolution to Purpose ScanGear CS-U provides many choices for r esolution. What resolution you choose depends on your output device, how you want to use the image, the type of image, and your scanner . In general, it is recommended that you scan the image at a higher r esolution than you need.
