11 HO W TO CHOOSE A SHUTTER SPEED 11 Ho w to Cho ose a Sh utter Sp eed The sh utter controls exposure by the length of time it remains open. The basic function of sh utter s p eed is to pro vide correct exp osure, but you can also use it to con trol the expression of your sub ject’s motion and to control the effect of camera mo vemen t.
11.2 Blurring the Sub ject’s Motion 11 HO W TO CHOOSE A SHUTTER SPEED 11.2 Blurring the Sub ject’s Motion Blurring part of the picture can giv e a convincing sense of action. T o blur the sub- ject, simply set a sh utter sp eed which is too slow to freeze its action.
12 APER TURE Blurring part of the picture can heigh ten the sense of action. In most cases, ho w- ev er, image blur is undesirable. T o a v oid blurred pictures from camera mov ement, c ho ose a sh utter sp eed of at least 1/60 sec. for handheld sho oting with a standard lens.
12 APER TURE The smaller the ap erture, the wider the range of sharpness. This is illustrated by the picture ab o v e which w as taken at f/22. Compare it with the photo to s righ t. This extended depth of field is esp ecially go o d for such sub jects as landscap es.
13 EXPOSURE MODES 13 Exp osure Mo des The New Canon F-1 is basically a man ual-exp osure camera capable of through-the- iens, full-ap erture metering and stopp ed-down metering with the Ey e-Lev el Finder FN.

In ap erture-priorit y AE or stopp eddo wn AE, the coupling range is EV-1 to EV 19 (1/1000 sec.
21 METERING SENSITIVITY AREAS 21 Metering Sensitivit y Areas With the New Canon F-1, a sp ecial optical element in eac h fo cusing screen de- termines the metering sensitivit y area. Thus the metering area can be changed, according to the sub ect y ou are sho oting and the lens in use, simply by repla cing the fo cusing screen.
21 METERING SENSITIVITY AREAS 3. Sp ot Metering Sp ot metering is ideal for sub jects which require carefully-aimed, precise measure- men t. Since the metering area is 3% of the field of view, you can select a small, exact area from the o verall scene.
21 METERING SENSITIVITY AREAS 44.
22 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION 22 Exp osure Comp ensation With cen ter-weigh ted av erage metering, the camera’s meter reads the av erage bright- ness of the sub jects in a scene, with sp ecial emphasis placed on those in the center. Certa n ligh ting conditions, how ever, ma y necessitate exp osure correction.
22 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION 1. Man ual Exp osure After setting the desired sh utter sp eed, turn the ap erture ring un til the ap erture needle aligns with the meter needle.
