About this Manual 12 69 Setting the Time Code The camcorder g enerates a times code signal and embeds it in your recordings. 2 21 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcor der using a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, the c amcorder will dr aw power fro m the power outlet.

Preparing t he Camcorde r 30 NOTES • T ur ning on the image stabilization function o f an EF lens may reduce the ef fective usage time of the battery pack. When image stabilization i s no t necessary , for example if the cam corder is fixed to a tripod, it is recom mended to turn it off.

Less than 0.01% o f the pixels may occasio nally misfir e or appear as black, red, blue or green dots.
35 Preparing t he Camcorde r Attachi ng the Grip Un it The grip unit can be attached in any of 24 positions (at 15º intervals) to give you a conven ient grip angl e for high- and low-ang le shooting. 1 Set the Q switch to OFF . 2 Unscrew the thumb r est and remove it f rom the camcord er .

Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 38 Usi ng an SD C ar d SD Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use the following types of commer cially availabl e Secure Digital (SD) car ds with this camcor der . The camcorder is equipped with two SD car d slots.

If both slots co ntain an SD card, y ou can switch between them as necessary . Press the SLOT SELECT button. • The access indicator of the selected SD card slot will ill uminate in gr een.

3 45 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basics . Bef or e you begi n re cording, make a test r ecording f irst to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record for approxim ately 15 minutes at the default bit rate, 24 Mbps (LPCM ) ( A 50).

47 Recording V ideo Locking the Co ntrols in Recording Mode Once in mode, y ou can set the Q switch to C (key lock) to lock all the physical controls (bu ttons and swi tches) on the camcorder , save for the ST ART/STOP button. This is useful in pr eventing settings from being changed due to inadvertently pressing one of the buttons.

Video Configuration: S ystem Frequency, Bit Rate and Fram e Rate 50 Video Configuration: System Frequenc y , Bit Rate and Frame Rate Before you r ecord, select the bit rate and frame rate that best ma tch your creative needs. The options available will depend on the system fr equency selected: 59.

Changing Main C amera Functions with the Joystick 52 Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Y ou can adjust three main camera f unctions – shutter speed, white balance and I SO speed/gain– u sing only the joystick. This section will explain the basic operation for changing a value.
53 Shutter Speed Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the r ecording conditions. For example, yo u may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker e nvironments. The cam corder offers the follo wing 5 modes. [Speed]: Allows you to set the shutter speed (in fractions of a second).
Shutter Sp eed 54 Changing the Shutter Mode 1 Open the shutter [Mode] submenu. [ ~ Camera S etup] > [Shutter] > [Mode] 2 Select the desir ed mode and then pr ess the jo ystick. • If you selected [Speed] (the default value), you can continue the procedur e to select the incr ement scale to use when adjustin g the shutter speed.
55 Shutter Speed NOTES • Closing down the aperture when r eco rdin g under bright con ditions may cause the pictur e to appear soft or out of focus. T o avoid the loss of sharpness due to diff rac tion, use a faster shutter speed, a denser ND filter ( A 58) or open up the apertur e.
ISO Spee d/Ga in 56 ISO Speed/Gain Depending on the shooting conditio ns you may want to ad just the brightness of the ima ge. Y ou can do so by changing the ISO speed or gain value to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor .
57 ISO Speed/ Gain Adjusting the ISO/Gain V alue 1 Press the I SO/GAIN button. • The curr ent ISO/gain va lue will be hig hlighted in orange. 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the desired ISO sp eed or gain value an d then p re ss the j oystick .
ND Filter 58 ND Fi lt er Using the ND filters allows you keep the apertur e within an appropriate range when r ecording i n brig ht surroundings*. * Closi ng down the ap erture when recording under b right c onditio ns may cause the pictur e to appear soft or out of focus.
59 Adjusting the Aperture Adjusting the Apertur e Y ou can affect the brightness of your reco rdings or ch ange the depth of field by adjusting the ape rture. For example, use a sm all aperture value f or a shallow depth of field that isolates the subject in focus and nicely blurs the backgr ound.
Adjusting the Aperture 60 Mom entary A utomatic Apertu re - Pu sh Auto Iris Press the PUSH AUTO IRIS button to ha ve the camcor der automatically adjust the aperture (f/stop) for an optimal exposur e. Hold down the PUSH AUTO IRIS button. • The camcorder will automatically adju st the aperture to obtain optimal exposure.
61 Adjusting the Aperture Ligh t Meter ing Mode Select the light metering m ode to match the rec ording co nditions. Using the appr opriate setting will ensur e that the camcor der obtains the most suit able exposur e level when the push au to iris function is u sed.
White Balance 62 Whit e Bala nc e The camcor der uses an electronic whit e balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e and ensure accurate c olors under diff erent lighting conditions.
63 White Balance Preset White Balance Settings 1 Press the WB butto n. • The white balance mode ic on wi ll be hig hlighted in oran ge. • Y ou can also select the white balance mode icon using only th e joystick ( A 52 ). 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the ¼ or É icon and then pr ess the joystick.
Adjusting the Focus 64 Adjusting the Focus The camcor der offers tw o ways to focus. Manual focus: T urn the focus ring on the attached lens to adjust the focus. The cam cor der of fers several focus assistance functions to help you focus mo re accurately when using the manual focus.
65 Adjusting the Focus • W ith some EF lenses, the camcorder may take longer to focus automatically or may not be able to focus corr ectly . Visit your local Canon W eb site for the latest information. • One-shot AF m ay not work well on the following subj ects or in the following cases.
Adjusting the Focus 66 Using the Focus Assis tance Functions In order to focus mor e accurately , you can use two focus assistance functions – peakin g, which cr eates a clearer contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject, and magnif ication, which enlarges the image on the screen.
67 Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns Onscr een M arkers and Ze bra Patterns Using onscreen m arkers allows you to make sur e your su bject is co rrectly fr amed an d is within the appr opriate safe area. The zebra patterns help you identify areas that ar e overexposed.
Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns 68 NOTES • If you set an assignable button to [Mar kers] ( A 85), you can press the button to turn the onscreen mark ers on and off. Displaying Zeb ra Patterns The camcor der has a zebra pattern feature that shows black and white diagonal stripes over areas that ar e over exposed.
69 Setting the Time Code Setting the Time Code The camcor der generates a time code signal and embeds it in your recor dings. Y ou can output the time code along w ith video out put fr om the HDMI OUT term inal ( A 134). For 59.94 Hz r ecordings, you can also se lect between a dr op frame and non-dr op frame time code.

71 Setting the Time Code NOTES • When the frame rate is set to 24P , the frames value in th e time code runs from 0 to 23. When the frame rate is set to 50i or PF25, it runs fr om 0 to 24. With other fram e rates, it ru ns fro m 0 to 29. • When pre-r ecording m ode is activated, [Free R un] is set automatically and cannot be changed.
Setting the Us er Bit 72 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. The re ar e sixteen possible characters: the num bers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
73 Recor ding A udio Recor ding Audio Y ou can record audio using the built-i n stereo micr ophone*, commerc ially available micr ophones (XLR terminal*, MIC terminal) or line inpu t (XLR terminal*). Using the XLR terminals, you can select th e audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2 .

Video Scopes 80 Video Scopes The camcor der can display a simplified w aveform monitor or an edge monitor* to he lp you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD scr een. They do not appear in the viewfinder o r on an external monitor . * The edge mo nitor look s at the focus of th e entire picture and dis plays the r esu lts as a waveform .

83 Pre-recording Mod e Pre-recording M ode When pre- recor ding mode is activ ated, the camcorder starts r ecor ding contin uously into a tempora ry memory of approximately 3 seconds so when you press the ST ART/ST OP button, the clip will contain also approximately 3 seconds of video and audio recor ded before you pr essed the button.

4 85 Customization Assignable Buttons The camcor der conveniently features 15* buttons to which you can assign various functions. By assigning often- used functions, you can quickly access them with a single press of a button. Assignable button 7 is located on the grip unit, so its availability depends on the camcor der configuratio n used.

93 Custom Picture Settings [Sharpness] Sets the sharpness of the ou tput and reco rding signal. [Level]: Sets the sharpness level. This setting c an be adjusted from -10 to 50. (Def ault: ±0) [H Detail Freq. ]: Sets the center frequency of horizo ntal sharpness.
Cu stom Pictur e Set tings 94 [Offset]: Adjusts the sharpness level of dark areas in th e image. Setting highe r values will lower the sharpness level. This setting can be adju sted fr om 0 to 50. (Default: 0 ) [Noise R eduction] Reduces the amount of noise that appear s in the image.
95 Custom Picture Settings [B-G]: The B-G matrix changes the tint of the pictur e along the yellow /green and bl ue/magenta gradations. This setting can be adju sted from -50 to 50. (Defa ult: ±0) [White Balance] Adjusts the amount of white balance thr oughout the whole image.
Cu stom Pictur e Set tings 96 Simplifi ed Graphical Interface In addition to the very detailed settings explained in the previous section ( A 91), the camcor der of fers a mor e intuitive graphical interface for adjusting the gam ma curve and white ba lance settings.
