10 Before Using the Sc anner Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions des cribed below. Installat ion Locat ion The perfo rmance of this scanner is affec ted by th e environment in which it is insta lled.
11 Power Sup ply ● Connect only to a power outlet of the rated voltage and power supply frequency (either 120 V, 60 Hz or 220-240 V, 50/60 H z, depending on your region). ● Do not connect other electrical equipment to the same power outlet to which the scanner is connected.
12 Moving the Scan ner ● Before mov ing the scanner, m ake sure to turn the po wer switch OFF, and discon nect the power plug from the p ower outlet. ● When moving the scanner, make sure to lock the lock switch and carry the scanner w ith both hands so as not to drop it.
13 CAUTION ● Do not install the scanner on a surf ace that is unstable, tilted, or in an area subject to excessive v ibrations, as this m ay cause t he scanner to fall, resulting in personal injury or damage to the scanner. ● Do not block the ventilation openings.
14 Features Multiple Methods for Document Feeding ● Scan multipage docum ents at up t o 20 pages per minute (for s ingle- sided documents) using the built-in feeder. The scanner can detect documents that are loaded into the feeder and begin sc anning automatically using the aut o-start function.
15 ● Skip Blank P age The scanner sca ns both sides of a document an d skips saving the image of any side it determines to be a blank page. ● Dropout Co lor Specify one color (red, blue, or green) to be omitted while scanning documents.

18 Operation Panel A Job Buttons Specific jobs are assigned to these buttons. Scanning will start when any of these buttons are pressed. The scanned images will be processed as follows for ea ch button: COPY: Prints scanned images to a specified print er.
19 Error Displays Rear A USB Connector Connect the supplied USB c able (or Hi-Speed USB 2.0 com patible cable) here. B ADF Connector CAUTION Never disconnect th e ADF con nector. The feeder will stop functioning if the ADF connector is d isconnected. C Power Connector Connect the supplied AC adapter here.
20 Handling Do cuments Feeding Methods There are three feeding methods (feeder, flatbed, business card feeder) for scanning documents with this scanner.
21 • Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry that may get caught in the scanner while you are using it. Doing so may result in personal injury. Be extra careful of neckties and long hair. If anything becomes caught in the scanner, immediately disconnect the power plug from the power outlet to stop the scanner.
22 Placing Do cuments into th e Feeder 1 Fan the pag es of the doc ument to be sca nned, and load the docum ent into th e feeder with the scanning si de faci ng up . 2 Adjust the docume nt guides to the edges of the docume nt. IMPORTANT • Close the busines s card feeder .
23 Placing Do cuments on the Flatbed 1 Place the do cument on th e flatbed with the scanning side faci ng do wn, and ali gn t he upp er le ft corner of th e docume nt with the positioning guid e on the flatbed. IMPORTANT • Do not place objects other than the document to b e scanned onto the flatbed platen glass.
24 Placing Ca rds into the Busine ss Card Feeder 1 Open t he busines s card feed er. 2 Hold down th e lever ( A ) on the side of the bus iness ca rd feeder , and place the cards into th e feeder w ith the scan ning side fac ing up. Fully insert the ca rds until th ey reach th e stopper s ( B ) at the back of the feeder.
25 Scanning Supplied Softwar e The following software is supplied with t he scanner, and can be installed from t he supplied Setup disc. • ISIS/TWAIN Driver The ISIS/TWA IN driver is used for this scanner. Open the drive r to configure the scanning conditions if you are performing scan ning operations.
26 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch This section des cribes the DR-2020U ’s scanning application, CaptureOnTouch. Capt ureO nTou ch F eat ures Using CaptureOnTouch allows you to s can using easy-t o-follow on- screen instructions.
27 Select Scan Job Register the scanning conditions and output methods as jobs, and then select a job t hat matches your intended purpose to begin scanning.
28 Outputs Methods There are four methods avail able for proces sing scanned images. * [Attach to E-m ail] in [Scan First], and [Send b y E-mail] in [Select S can Job]. Starting Capt ureOnTo uch CaptureOnTouch resides on your system when you log on to Windows, and a CaptureOnTouch icon appears on the taskbar (default).
29 Scanner Set tings Configure various scan settings, such as the scanning method and document size. [Scan First ] and [Select Scan Job] share the same sc anner setting items.
30 ● [Use advanced settings dialog box] Scanner settings other than the basic settings are configured on the driver settings scr een. To open the dr iver settings scre en, select the [Use advanced settings dialog box] check box and click [Open]. For details on setting items, see “Configuring the ISIS/TWAIN Driver” on p.
31 While scanning is in progress, the numb er of pag es scanned is displayed in addition to the scanner settings. When document scanning is finished, the output method selection screen appears. 3 Spec if y the ou tput metho d. 4 Configure settings for the output method.
32 • [Attach to E- mail] Specify the file nam e and format for the image file to be attached to the e-mail. To use this function, you must specify the MAPI-compat ible (Microsoft M essaging Applicat.
33 5 Click the output bu tton to output the sca nned images . The name of the output button differs depending on the selected output method. The completion screen appears after the scanned images are output. 6 Press the STOP but ton on the op eration panel.
34 Scanning with the Job Bu ttons Under default settings, the following jobs are assigned to the job buttons on the scanner. When y ou load a document into the scanner and press a job button, C aptureOnTouch starts and sc anning begins. The following describes the procedure for scanning.
35 You can change the settings for the output method here. For details on output method settings, see “Outputs M ethods” on p. 28 . Click the output butt on to c ontinue and output the scanned images. The name of the output but ton differs depending on the selected output method.
36 Hin t If you select a registered job and click [Job list/edit], the [Job editing] dialog box appears allowing you to ed it the settings of the selected job. 4 Select an [Unco nfigured] job number from the job list. The title bar display changes to [ Register new job].
37 [Compose e-mai l] This tab appears w hen [Send by E -mail] is selected in the [Output method] list box. Compose an e-mail message to which scanned images will be at tached and sent in this tab. To send a n e-mail message with sca nned image attachments, you must configure the e-mail settings.
38 4 Configure the settings fo r the mail s erver. • Enter the mail server address in [Mail Server]. • If necessary, enter t he port number to use for s ending mail in [Port number]. • Specify the authentication method for the mail server in the [Authentication method] list box.
39 Hint If you select the [Confirm output] check box and execute a job for which the output m ethod is [Send by E-ma il], the following output confirmation screen appears after scanning is finished, allowing you to confirm and edit the regist ered settings for the job .
40 Other Me thods for Scan ning You can also operate Ca ptureOnTouch from a computer. This s ection describes the procedures for this method. Scanning from the Taskbar Menu Taskbar me nu Click (CaptureO nTouch), and click a registered job or [Scan Firs t] in the menu that appears.
41 Scanning with Ca pturePerf ect 3.0 CapturePerfect 3.0 is an ISIS -compliant application developed for Canon document scanners. For more informat ion on CapturePer fect 3.
42 Scan to Presentation This mode is useful when a com pact scanner is used in an environment such a s a conferenc e hall, where it is c onnected to a large display or projector. By setting CapturePerfect to full-screen display before scanning, you can display sc anned images at full size on the screen.
43 5 Click [O K] to finish scanner se lectio n. 6 Select [Scan Batch to File] from the [Sc an] menu. The [Scan Batc h to File Setting] dialog box appears. 7 Click [Sca nner Se tting], and con figure th e scanner settings. The properties dialog box for the scanner driver appear s.

IMPORTANT Depending on the [Feeder/Flatbed] and [Feeding Option] settings, place your documents as follows: • If [Feeding Option] is set to [S tandard Feed ing], place your documents before s tarting the scan p rocedure.
45 12 When scanning is complete, select [Exit] f rom the [File] menu to qui t C apt ure Perfec t. Registering Jobs and Scanning You can regist er the scanning conditions and sc an mode in ad vance as a job with CapturePerfect. By selecting [ Scan Job] from the [Scan] menu, you can specify these r egistered jobs and perform scanning.
46 [Scan To Mail]: Attaches sc anned images to an e-mail messa ge and sends it. [Sca n T o P rin t]: Prints scanned images to a specified printer. 5 Click [D etail Settings ]. A settings dialog box based on the specified function appears. [Sca n T o P C]: Specify the file name, format, and dest ination for the image file t o be saved.
47 7 Click [O K] to close th e [Register /Edit/Delet e] dialog box . Hin t • You can register up to 99 jobs. • T o edit the settings of a registered job, select the job and click [Create/Edit]. • T o delete a registered job, select the job to delete and click [Delete].
48 Configurin g the ISIS/TWAIN Driver You can open t he ISIS/TWAIN driver to c onfigure scan conditio ns and settings when scanning documents with ISIS/TWAIN-compliant applications (such as CaptureOnTouch). This section des cribes the layout and features of t he ISIS/TWAIN driver.
49 [Brightness] Tab Adjust the brightness and contrast of scanned images. You can also click [Gam ma] to configur e gamma corre ction settings. [Image processing] Tab Configure the image processing settings. Hint The [Reverse Image] check box does not appear if the driver is opened from an ISIS-com pliant application.
50 Basic Condit ion Settings This sectio n provides an overview of the basic setting items that are needed to configure the scanner settings. Specifying the Basic Conditions for Scanning When scanning documents, mak e sure to s pecify the Mode, P age Size, Dots per inch, and Scanning S ide, from the [B asic] tab.
51 [Feeder/Flatb ed] Specify whether to scan documents using the feeder or the flatbed when the business card feeder is closed. If [Auto] is select ed, scanning occurs from the feeder only when documents are p laced in the feeder. (If there are no document s in the feeder, the document s placed on t he flatbed are scanned.
52 Configuring the Scanner Settings Configure the scanning conditions based on the desired scanning results. When you w ant to delete blank pages in two-sided documents Set [Scanning Side] to [Skip blank page] i n the [Basic] tab to delet e scanned blank pages in a document .
53 When you w ant to e nhance conto urs in im ages Adjust the [Edge emphasis] setting in t he [Image processing] tab. When you w ant to elimi nate bla ck borders aroun d scanned im ages Select the [Borde r Removal] check box in the [Image p rocessing] tab.
54 When you w ant to clarify text that is difficu lt to read Set [Mode] to [Advanced Text Enhancement] or [Advanced Text Enhancement ll] in the [Basic] tab. T he background sur rounding the text is remov ed or proc essed, emphas izing the text f or easy reading.
55 When you wa nt to rotate the ima ges of a docum ent that is loaded horiz ontally to the correct orie ntation Specify the rotation angle from the [Document Orientation] drop-down list in the [Image processing] tab. Hint Images are rotated according to the orientation of the loaded document and the selected angle.
56 If you use Adobe Acrobat 9.0 with this machine and scan using the Custom Scan method, you should display the scanner’s Native Interface because you will not be able to scan correctly on the specified paper size.
57 Mode-Dependent Function Limitations Depending on the [Mode] setting selected in t he [Basic] tab, some of the settings in each of the driver tabs may be disabled as follows.
58 Scanner Op eratio n Setting s You can spe cify the wait time before the sc anner enters the s leep mode and specify whether to turn the scanner ON and OFF automatically when t he com puter is turned ON and OFF. To configure these s ettings , open the Scanner Properties screen.
59 Scanner Property Settings This section describes the setting items in the [ CCFL Control] and [Power Control] tabs. Hint The [Event] tab is a standard tab i n the operating system. For details on this tab, refer to the operation manual or Help for your operating system.
60 Maintena nce Routine Cleaning Clean the scanner on a regular basis to maintain scanning performance. WARNING • For safety, always turn the power switch OFF and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the scanner and the inside of t he feeder. • Do not use spray-type cleaners to clean the scanner.
61 2 Close th e feeder gently . CAUTION When closing the feeder, be careful not to get your f ingers caught, as this may result in personal injury. Cleani ng the Ro ller Un it and Separati on Pa d If streaks appear in scanned images, o r if scanned d ocuments become dirty, the r oller unit and se paration pad may b e dirty.
62 3 Remove the rolle r unit. Hold the center of the roller unit ( roller portion), lift the lock leve r side ( A ), then the ot her side ( B ). 4 Grasp both sides of the separation pad with your fingers, and re move the sepa ration p ad. 5 Use a cloth damp ened with water and thoroughly wrung out to wip e the roller s and sep aration pad clean.
63 3 Lower the lock lever to s ecure the roller unit into place. You can lo wer the lock lever smo othly by gent ly bending it inward. 4 Close th e feeder co ver and document feed tray. CAUTION When closing the feeder cover and document feed tray, be careful not to get your fingers caught, as t his may result in personal injury.
64 Troubleshooting This section des cribes the problem s that m ay occur while using the scanner and how to resolve t hem. It you cannot resolve a problem, contact your lo cal authorized Ca non dealer or your service representative. Common Pro blems an d Solu tion s Problem 1 The scanner will not turn on.
65 Probl em 6 Pages are missing. Solutions When the scanner driver 's [Scanning Side] s etting is [Skip Blank Page], documents with ve ry little black may be unintentionally skipped. Select another scan mode setting such as [Simplex] or [Duplex], or decrease the [Ratio of black pixels].
66 Software Trou bleshoot ing This section des cribes troubleshooting problems and solut ions for operating the supplied s oftware (CaptureOnTouch and CapturePerfect).
67 Can I copy o r back up scanne r setting config urations? CaptureOn Touch Scanner settings are backed up with other setting contents as Environment settings. See also the following question, “Can I copy or back up CaptureOnTouch settings?” . CapturePe rfect Scanner setting configurations c annot be copied or backed up in CapturePerfect.

69 3 If the jammed docum ent does not appear wrin kled or otherwi se d amaged, close the feeder cove r, and pres s the STOP button. The jammed document is ejected, and the error message is cleared on the display. 4 If the document is jammed at an angle or wr inkled, carefully remove the doc ument without tearing it.
70 Uninstalling the Software Some scanner malfunctions can be resolved by reinstalling the software. Be sure to perform the procedure below to unin stall the software before reinstalling it.
