About this Manual 14 Setting the Time Code The camcorder generates a time code signal and embeds it in your recordings. Y ou can output the t ime code signal from the HDMI OUT terminal ( A 172). The time code will appear in video output from the HDMI OUT terminal.

2 23 Preparations Preparing the Power Supply The first time you use the camcor der , charge the battery pack. If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcorder whil e a battery pack is attached, the camcorder will draw power from the power outlet.
Preparing the P ower Supply 24 • Repeatedly charging and discharging th e battery pack will eventual ly shorte n its battery life. Y ou can check the battery life on the [Battery/H our Meter] status screen ( A 179). Fully charging the battery pack and then discharging it will give you a more accurate readi ng.
25 Preparing the Power Su pply • USA and Canada only: The Lithium ion/polymer battery that powers the pr oduct is recyclable. Please call 1-800-8-BA TTER Y for inform ation on how to recycle this battery . Using a Power Outlet Y ou can also power the camcorder directly fr om a power outlet using the supplied compact power adapter .
Date, Time and La nguage Settings 26 Date, Time and Language Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcorder before you can start using it.
27 Date, Time and La nguage Settings Changing the Language The default language of the camcorder is English. Y ou can change i t to German, Spanish, Frenc h, Italian, Po lish, Portuguese, Ru ssian, Simplified Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Pleas e note that some settings and screens wil l be displayed in English, r egardless of the language setting.
Using the Menus 28 Using the Menus In mode, many of the camcorder’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu fo r general settings, which opens after pr essing the MENU button. Y ou can also regi ster fr equently used menu settings in a customized submenu (My Menu) for easy access.

Y ou can remove it and replace it with the thumb r est should the minimal configuration be ne ce ssary . While the grip unit is not attached, you will not be able to use the control dial and MAGN.
Preparing the C amcorder 36 Using the Viewfinder Adjusting the Viewfinder 1 Adjust the viewfinder’ s angle as necessary . • The viewfinder's angle can be adjusted up to 68°. 2 T ur n on the camcor der and adju st the dioptric adjustment lever .
37 Preparing the Camco rder Using the OLED Panel 1 Pull the OLED panel 180 degrees to the left. • The OLED panel can be pulled to the left 270 degrees so that the screen can be viewed from the side. 2 Push the OLED panel up or down to adjust it to the desired angle of view .
Preparing the C amcorder 38 NOTES • If you set an assignable button to [OL ED Setup] or [Viewfinder Setu p] ( A 107), yo u can press the button to open the re spective submenu. • Y ou can also press the DISP . button and hold it pr essed for about 3 seco nds to turn the OLED [Luminance] setting on and off.
39 Preparing the Camco rder Attaching a Shoulder Strap Pass the ends through the strap mount and adjust the length of the strap. IMPORT ANT • Be careful not to drop the cam corder when attaching or adjusting the shoulder strap.
Using an SD Card 40 Using an SD Car d SD Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcor der Y ou can use commercially availabl e Secure Digital (SD ) card s with this to save clips, photos, custom picture fil es and camera setting files. Initialize SD cards ( A 42) when you use them with this camcorde r for the first time.
41 Using an SD Card Inserting and Removing an SD Card The camcorder is equipped with two SD car d slots. 1 T urn off the camcor der . 2 Open the OLED panel and then open the SD card compartment cover . 3 Insert the SD car d straight, with the label facing up, all the way into the SD card slot until it clicks.
Using an SD Card 42 Initializing an SD Card The first time you use an SD car d with this camcor der , init ialize it first. Y ou can also initialize an SD card to permanently delete all the data it contains.
43 Using an SD Card Relay Recording and Double Slot Recor din g The camcor der features two useful SD card r ecording me tho ds , re la y re co rdin g a nd dou bl e s lo t re co rdi ng. Relay recording: This allows you to continue recording on another SD card if the SD card you ar e using becomes full.
Using an SD Card 44 Recovering Data on an SD Car d Some actions, such as suddenly turning off the camcor der or r emoving the SD car d while data is being recor ded, can cause data err ors on the SD car d. In such case, you may be able to recover the da ta on the SD card.
45 Adjusting the Black Balance Adjusting the Black Balance Y ou can have the camcorder adjust the blac k balanc e automatically whe n ambient temperature change s considerably or if ther e is a noticeable change in a true black video signal. 1 Open the [ABB] screen.

3 47 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basics. Befor e you begi n r ecording, make a test r ecording first to check if the camcorder operates c orrectly . Record an A VCHD clip at 28 Mbps for approximately 25 m inutes and an MP4 clip at 35 Mbps for approximately 20 minutes ( A 54).
Recording Vide o 48 2 Press the ST ART/STOP button to begin r ecording. • Recording starts. The rear and fr ont tally lamps illuminate and the rec ording in dicator [ Ü REC] appears at the top of the screen.

53 Recording Video NOTES • Depending on the ambient temperature and other shooting conditions, the cooling fan may not turn of f even if you set [Fan] to [Automatic].

55 Video Configuration: Mo vie Format, System Frequency , Bit Rate and Frame Rate Selecting the Frame Rate Follow the pr ocedure below to se lect the frame rate. Howeve r , in the following cases, the frame rate is se t automatically and cannot be changed.
Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick 56 Changing Main Camera Func tions with the Joystick Y ou can adjust three main came ra fu nctions—shutter speed, white balance and ISO sp eed/gain— using only the joystick (dir ect setting mode). This s ection will explain the basic operation of the dir ect setting mode.
57 Shutter Speed Mode Shutter Speed Mode Set the shutter speed mode based on the r ecording co nditions. For example, you may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker environments. Th e ca mcorder of fers the following modes. [Speed]: Allows you to set th e shutter speed (in fractions of a second).
Shutter Speed Mode 58 Changing the Shutter Speed Mode 1 Open the shutter [Mode] submenu. [ ~ Camera Setup] > [Shutter] > [Mode] 2 Select the desired mode and then pr ess the joystick. • If you selected [Speed] (the defau lt value), you can continue the procedur e to select the increme nt scale to use when adjusting the shutter speed.
59 Shutter Speed Mode NOTES • Closing down the aperture when recording under bright conditions ma y cause the pictur e to appear soft or out of focus. T o avoid the loss of sharpn ess due to diffraction, use a faster shutter speed, a denser ND filter ( A 62) or open up the apertu re.
ISO Speed/Gain 60 ISO Speed/Gain Depending on the shooting condition s you may want to adjust the brightness of the image. Y ou can do so by changing the ISO speed or gain value to adjust the sensit ivity of the sensor .
61 ISO Speed/Gain Adjusting the ISO/Gain V alue 1 Press the ISO/GAIN button. • The current ISO speed/gain va lue will be highligh ted in orange. 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the desired ISO speed or gain value and then pr ess the joystick. • The selected ISO speed/gain value will be set and the display will return to normal.
ND Filter 62 ND Filter Using the ND filters allows you keep the aperture within an appropriate range when r ecording in bright surroundings*. * Closing down the apertur e when r ecording under bright conditions may cause the picture to ap pear soft or out of focus.
63 Adjusting the Aperture Adjusting the Aperture Y ou can affect the brightness of your re cor dings or change the depth of fiel d by adjusting the apertur e. Available aperture values will vary depending on the lens attache d to the camcorder . The camcorder of fers 3 ways to adjust the aperture.
Adjusting the Ape rture 64 3 Select the desired apertur e value from the list. • Y ou may need to scroll up/down to see all the available values. • Alter natively , you can press IRIS [+] to open the aper ture or IRIS [-] to close the aperture in 1/8-stop increme nts.
65 Adjusting the Aperture Momentary Automatic Aperture - Push Auto Iris During manual aperture, you can press the PUSH AUTO IRIS button to have the cam corder temporarily take contro l and automatically adjust the apertur e (f/stop) for an optimal exposur e.
Adjusting the Ape rture 66 Automatic Aperture When a compatible lens is attached to the camcorder , you can have the cam corder a utomatically adjust the aperture (f/stop).
67 Adjusting the Aperture • If you set an assignable button to [AE Shift +] or [AE Shift -] ( A 107), you can press the button to adjust the AE shift level.
White Balanc e 68 White Balance The camcor der uses an electr onic white balance pr oce ss to calibrate the pictur e an d ensure accurate colors under differ ent lighting conditions.
69 White Balance • Custom white balance may provide bett er r esults in the following cases: - Changing lighting conditions -C l o s e - u p s - Subjects in a single color (sky , sea or forest) - Under mercury lamps and certain ty pes of fluorescent and LED lights Preset White Ba lance Settings 1 Press the WB button.
White Balanc e 70 Remote Operation Using Browser Remote After completing the ne cessary preparations ( A 153), you can adjust the white balance remotely from a Wi-Fi- enabled device using the Br owser Remote application. 1 Press [ Å A] on the Browser Remote scr een.
71 Adjusting the Focus Adjusting the Focus The camcor der incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology , allowing you to use conti nuous AF or one-shot AF while shooting. Select the focusing method that best fulf ils your needs and is most suited for the lens you ar e using.
Adjusting the Focus 72 • [AF] will appear on the left of the screen. 2 Press the [FOCUS] controls to adjust t he focus as necessary . • Press one of the controls on the [NEAR] side to focus cl oser or on e of the contr ols on the [F AR] side to focus farther away .
73 Adjusting the Focus Magnification 1 Press the MAGN. button. • ^ appears at th e lower center of the screen and the center of the scree n is magnified appr oximately 2 times*. 2 If you need to move ar ound the ma gnification frame to check other parts of the image, use the joystick ( ÝÞ ).
Adjusting the Focus 74 One-Shot AF When an EF lens (except f or manual focus lenses) is attached to the camcorder , you can use the one-shot AF func tion during man ual focus to have the camcorder focu s automati cally only once on the subject at the center of the sc reen.
75 Adjusting the Focus Activating AF Lock Press the AF L OCK button. • The frame at the center of the screen will turn gray and the focus will be locked.
Adjusting the Focus 76 • Continuous AF will not wo rk in the following cases. - W hen using an EF lens that does not have a focus mode switch. - While adjusting the apertur e, except when us ing an EF lens compatible with face AF ( A 65). - While adjusting the focus using a r emote co ntroller attached to the REMOTE terminal.
77 Adjusting the Focus Activating AF Lock 1 Open the AF [Mode] submenu. [ ~ Camera Setup] > [AF] > [Mode] 2 Select [Continuous] and th en press the joystick. • A white frame will appear in the center of the screen. 3 Press the AF LOCK button. • The frame at the center of the screen will turn gray and the focus will be locked.
Onscreen Mark ers and Zebra Patterns 78 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patter ns Using onscreen markers allows you to make sur e your subject is correctly fr amed and is within the appr opriate safe ar ea. The zebra patterns help you identify ar eas th at ar e overexposed.
79 Onscreen Mark ers and Zebra Patterns NOTES • Y ou can turn of f all other onscreen disp lays, leaving only the onscr een markers ( A 52). • If you set an assignable button to [Markers] ( A 107), you can press the button to turn the onscreen markers on and off.
Setting the Time Code 80 Setting the Time Code The camcor der generates a time code signal and embeds it in your r ecord ings. Y ou can output the time code signal from the HDMI OUT terminal ( A 170). Selecting the Running Mode Y ou can select the running mode of the camcorder’ s time code.
81 Setting the Time Code 3 Push the joystick up/down to set the hours and then press the joystick to move to the minutes. 4 Change the r est of the fields (minut es, seconds, frame) in the same way . • Press the CANCEL button to close the screen without setting the time code.
Setting the Time Code 82 NOTES • When the frame rate is set to 23.98P , the frames value in the time code runs fr om 0 to 23. When the frame rate is set to 50.00i, PF25.00 or 25.00P , it runs from 0 to 24. With other frame rates, it runs fr om 0 to 29.
83 Setting the User Bit Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be sele cted from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identifi cati on code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. Ther e ar e sixtee n possible character s: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
Recording Au dio 84 Recor ding Audio Y ou can recor d audio using the monaural micropho ne (above the lens m ount), built-in ste reo micr ophone (on the handle unit)*, commerciall y available micr ophones (XLR te rminal*, MI C terminal) or lin e input (XLR termina l*).
85 Recordin g Audio Switching to the Built-in Microphone or External Microp hone (MIC T e rminal) T o use the built-in microphone, make sure to attach the handle unit in advance. Set the CH1/CH2 AUDIO IN switch to INT . • Audio can be recorded using the built -in micro phone or a microphone connected to the MIC terminal.
Recording Au dio 86 When the Handle Unit is Not Attached Y ou can use an external microphone connected to the MIC terminal without attaching the handle un it. In such case, adjust the micr ophone's audi o recor ding level using the menu. 1 Open the [MIC Mode] submenu.
87 Recordin g Audio Activating the Mi crophone Attenu ator If the audio level is too high and the sound sounds distort ed when recor ding with the built-in microp hone or an external microphone connected to the MIC terminal , acti vate the microphone attenuator (built-in micr ophone: 12 dB, external micr ophone (MIC terminal): 20 dB).
Recording Au dio 88 Using Audio Input from the XLR T erminals Using the XLR terminals CH1 and CH2, you can record audio in dependently to the two audio channels fr om a microphone or analog audio input source. Switching Between Microp hone and Line Input 1 Set the AUDIO IN switch of the desir ed channel to EXT .
89 Recordin g Audio Adjusting the Audio Level for the XLR T erminals Y ou can set the audio r ecording leve l for audio input from the XLR te rminals to automatic or manual independently for each channel.
Recording Au dio 90 Adjusting the Microp hone’ s Sensitivity Y ou can adjust the microph one’ s sensitivity if the XLR term inal switch is set to MIC or MI C+48V .
91 Color Bars/Au dio Reference Signal Color Bars/Audio Reference Signal Y ou can have the camcorder genera te and recor d colo r bars a nd a 1 kHz audio refer ence signal and output them fr om the HDMI OUT terminal, A V OUT te rminal and × (headphone) terminal (aud io refer ence signal only).
Video Scopes 92 Video Scopes The camcorder can disp lay a simplified waveform monitor or vectorscope. It can also display an edge mo nitor to help you focus. The video scopes appear only on the OLED screen . They do not appear in the viewfinder or on an external monitor .
93 Video Scopes Configuring the V ectorscope The camcor der’ s vectorscope function offers 2 modes. Y ou can also change the gain. 1 Open the vectorscope [T ype] submenu. [ w Ot her Functions] > [WFM (OLED)] > [V ectorscope] > [T ype] 2 Select the desired option and then pr ess the joystick.
Reviewing a Recor ding 94 Reviewing a Recor ding When the camcorder is in mode, yo u ca n review the last clip that was recor ded. 1 Open the [Review Recording] submenu to set the review length. [ w Ot her Functions] > [Review Recor ding] 2 Select the desired option and then pr ess the joystick.
95 Selecting the File Numbering Method Selecting the File Numbering Method MP4 clips and photos ar e automatically assigned consec utive numbers and stored on the SD card in folder s. Y ou can select the file numbering method to be used. We r ecommend using the [Continuous] setting.
Special Recor ding Modes 96 Special Recor ding Modes The camcor der features the followi ng special recor ding modes. Pre-r ecording: The camcor der will st art recor ding approxi mately 3 seconds before you press the ST ART/STOP button. This is espe cially useful when it is dif ficult to predict when to start recor ding.

Continuous Recording 98 Continuous Recor ding Using continuous recor ding you can avoid missing import ant shooting opportunities.
