Placing Units On Top of Each Other 27 Placing Units On T op of Each Other If the Switch units ar e fr ee-standing, up to eight units can be placed one on top of the other . If you are mixing a variety of SuperStack ® 3 Switch and Hub units, the smaller units must be positioned at the top.

The Cascade Module is insta lled into the expansion slot at the rear of the Switch and the Cascad e Extender Unit plugs into the Cascade Module. Stacking Units 29 ■ The Cascade Extende r Unit is hot-insertable. This allows its host Switch unit to b e removed and re placed without disturbing the rest of the stack. ■ Only 3Com ® Cascade Cables can be used to connect between Cascade Modules/Cascade E xtender Units.
30 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH The Power -up Sequence The following sections describe how to get your Switch 4400 powered-up and ready for operation. Powering-up the Switch 4400 Use the following sequence of steps to power -up the Switch. 1 Plug the power co r d into the power soc ket at the rear of the Switch.
The Power-up Sequence 31 CAUTION The Switch has no ON/OFF switch ; the only metho d of connecting or disconnecting main s power is by connect ing or disconnecting the power cord. CAUTION: The Switch can only use a Su per Stack Advanced Redundant Power System output.

3 S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Y our Switch can operate in its default state, that is, you can install it and it will work straight away (plug-and- play). Ho wever , to make full use of the features of fer ed by the Switch, and to chan ge and monitor th e way it works, you have to acce ss the management software that r esid es on the Switch.
34 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Setting Up Overview This section gives an overview of what you need to do to get your Switch set up an d r eady fo r manage ment when it is in its default st ate. The whole setup process is summarized in Figur e 9 .
Setting Up Overview 35 CAUTION: T o protect your Switch from unauthorized access, you must change all three default passwords as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to actively manage your Swit ch. For more inform ation on de fault users and changing default passwords, see “Def ault Users and Passwords” on page 54 .
36 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT This process is known as Auto-IP and is the same mechanism used by W indows 98 and W ind ows 2000. IP a ddresses configured by Auto-IP are temporary as they cannot be r outed but are useful for small networks which are not connected to other netw orks, or for initial config uration.
Manually Configuring IP In formation 37 Manually Configuring IP Information Y ou can manually configure the Switch IP information in the following ways: ■ Connecting to a front panel port — Connect a workstat ion using an Ether net cable to a front panel port of the Switch.

Manually Configuring IP In formation 41 Pre-r equisites ■ A workstation with terminal emulat ion software installed, such as Microsoft Hyperterminal. This software allows you to communicate with the Switch via the console port directly , or thr ough a modem.

Setting Up Web Interface Management 51 7 Enter your usual user name and password to access the CLI commands. For increased security please change the default password when using SSH for the first time.
52 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT T o enable style sheets in Netscape Navigato r 4.76 on Solaris 2.6, open Netscape Navigator and select Edit > Preferences > Fonts . Select the Use document-specified fonts, including Dynamic Fonts radio button.
Setting Up SNMP Management 53 ■ The management workstation is connected to the Switch using a po rt in the man agement VLAN. By defa ult, VLAN 1 is the management VLAN containing all ports on the Switch. Y ou can use the 3Com Network Director application that is available from the 3Com website to provide SNMP ma nagement for your Switch.

58 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLVING Solving Problems Indicated by LEDs If the LEDs on the Switch indicate a problem, r efer to the list of suggested solutions below . The Power LED does not light Check that the power cable is firmly connected to the Switch and to the supply outlet.
Solving Hardware Problems 59 ■ Auto-negotiation settings are the same at both ends. Auto-negotiation problems will occur with 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T where auto-negotiation is disabled a nd incorr ect.
60 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLVING Switch. The monitori ng system polls the fan status at periodic intervals while the unit is powered up. If one or mor e fans have failed in the Switch, a warning messa.
Solving Communication Problems 61 If yes, check that: ■ The air vents are not obstructed. ■ The ambient temperatures and envir onmental conditions meet those specified in Appendix C . 4 Power cycle the unit. If a further thermal shutdown occurs, and all environmental conditions ar e satisfactory , return the unit to 3Com.
