About this printer 3 1 Positioning the printer 1 Please read the following before you use the printer. Power supply 1 Use the printer within the recomme nded power range. The power cord, including exten sions, should not be longer than 5 meters (16.5 feet).
4 2 2 What kind of paper can I use? 2 Type and size of paper 2 The printer loads paper from the installed paper tray, or the manual feed slot. Printing Methods 5 2 Recommended paper 2 Before you buy a lot of paper, please test a small qu antity to make sure that the paper is suitable . Use paper that is made for plain-p aper copying. Use paper that is 75 to 90 g/m 2 (20 to 24 lb).

Printing Methods 7 2 Printing methods 2 Printing on plain paper, bo nd paper and transparencies 2 You can print on plain paper, bond paper or transparencies from the paper tray or manual feed slot. For the paper you want to use, see What kind of paper can I use? on page 4.
Printing Methods 8 2 b Pull the paper tray completely out of the printe r. c While pressing the blue paper-guid e release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size.

Note • Paper jams may occur if you put more than 250 shee ts (80 g/m 2 or 21 lb) of plain or bond paper in the paper tray at any one time. • Paper jams may occur if you put more than 10 transp arencies in the paper tray at any one time.

Printing Methods 11 2 c Lift up the support flap to preven t paper from sliding off the face-down ou tput tray. Note If you choose not t o lift up the output tray support flap, we recommend that you remove printe d pages as soon as they come out of the printer.
Printing Methods 12 2 f After the printed page comes out of the printer, put in the next sheet of paper or the transparency as in Step 5 above. Repeat for each page that you want to print. Note If you print on transparencies, remove each transparen cy immediately after printing.
Printing Methods 13 2 Printing on thick pape r, labels and envelopes 2 Note The printer automatically turns on the Manual Feed mode wh en you put paper in the manual feed slot. When you select the paper you want to use, see W hat kind of paper can I use? on page 4.

Printing Methods 17 2 Duplex Printing 2 The supplied printer drivers for Windows ® 98/Me, Windows ® 2000/XP and Windows Vista ® all allow manual duplex printing. For mor e information about how to choose the settings, see the Help text in the printer driver.
Printing Methods 18 2 d The printer will now automatically pr int all the odd-numbered pa ges on the other side of the paper. Note When you put paper in the paper tray, first empty th e tray then put the printed pag es in the tray, with the printed side face up.
Printing Methods 19 2 Paper orientation for manual duplex printing 2 The printer prints the second page first. If you print 10 pages on 5 sheets of paper, it will print page 2 the n page 1 on the first sheet of paper. It will print page 4 then page 3 on the se cond sheet of paper.
20 3 3 Printer driver 3 A printer driver is software that translates data from the fo rmat used by a computer to the f ormat that a particular printer needs.

Driver and software 26 3 Job Spooling The printer saves data that you want to rep rint. You can reprint a document without sending the data again from your PC. T o reprint press and hold down the Go button for about 4 seconds until al l the LEDs light up in order ( Toner , Dr um , Error , Ready ).

Driver and software 30 3 Print settings 3 Set the Resolution , Media Type , Toner Save and ot her settings. You can change settings by se lecting the setting in the Printer Settings list: Quality .
Driver and software 31 3 Uninstalling the printer driver 3 You can uninstall the printer driver that you in stalled with the following steps. Note • This instruction is not available if you installed the prin ter driver from Windows Add Printer function.
Driver and software 32 3 For Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 or greater 3 a Disconnect the USB cable between the Macintosh and you r printer. b Restart the Mac. c Log on as an "Administrator".
33 4 4 LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) 4 This section refers to the four Ligh t Emitting Diodes (LEDs) ( Toner , Drum , Error , Ready ) and a control panel button ( Go ) on the con trol panel. The LED indications shown in the table below ar e used in the illustrations in this chapter.
Control panel 34 4 LED Printer st atus Sleep mode The power switch is off or the printer is in Sleep mode . Pressing the Go button wakes up the printer from Slee p mode to Ready mode. Ready to print The printer is ready to print. Warming up The printer is warming up.
Control panel 35 4 Toner life en d Replace the toner cartridge with a new on e. See Replacing the toner cartri dge on page 44 . Cartridge positio n error The toner cartridge is not installed cor rectly. Take out the toner cartr idge and put it back into the pr inter again.
Control panel 36 4 Back cover is open Close the back cover of the printer. Paper jam Clear the paper jam. See Paper jams and how to clear th em on page 61. If the printer does not start printing, press the Go button . No paper fed manual feed slot Put the paper in the manual fe ed slot.
Control panel 37 4 Service call indications 4 If there is an error that cannot be cleared by the user, th e printer will show that a service call is nee ded by lighting up all the LE Ds as shown below. If you see the service call indication above, turn off the power switch, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on and try to print again.
Control panel 38 4 Make a note of the indication and report th e error status to your dealer or a Brother authorize d service representative by referring to the above table. Note Make sure that the front cover is fully closed before you report a service call.
Control panel 39 4 Control panel button (Go button) 4 The control panel button has the following functions: Wake-up If the printer is in Sleep mode, pre ss the Go button to wake the printer up and go to the Read y state. Error recovery If there is an error, the printer will recover auto matically from some errors.
Control panel 40 4 Print a test page 4 You can use the Go button o r the printer driver to print a test pa ge. Using control panel button 4 a Turn off the printer. b Make sure that the front cover is closed and the p ower cord is plugged in. c Hold down the Go button as you turn on the power switch.
Control panel 41 4 Print a Printer Settings page 4 You can print the current settings using the co ntrol panel button or printer driver. Using the control panel button 4 a Make sure that the front cover is closed and the p ower cord is plugged in. b Turn on the printer and wait until the print er is in the Ready state.
42 5 5 You will need to replace certain parts and clean the printer regularly. WARNING When you replace certain parts or clean the p r inter regularly, pay attention to the following: • If your clothes are smeared with tone r, wipe off t he toner with a dry cloth and immediately wash the clothes in cold water to avoid stains.
Routine maintenance 43 5 Toner cartridge 5 The life of the original toner cartridge that came with the printer may be either a starter 1 or standard 2 toner cartridge, and depends on the model and country you bought the printer in. 1 The starter toner cartridge will print approximate ly 1,000 A4 or Letter-size single-sided pages.
Routine maintenance 44 5 Toner Life End message 5 If the LED shows the message below, the printer has run out of toner or the toner is not evenly distributed inside the cartridge. Replacing the toner cartridge 5 Note • To ensure high quality printing, make sure you use qual ity Brother toner cartridges.
Routine maintenance 45 5 CAUTION We recommend that you place th e drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable p aper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatt er toner. To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown in the illustrations.
Routine maintenance 46 5 d Unpack the new toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge le vel with both han ds and gently rock it from side to side five or six times to spread the toner evenly inside the ca rtridge. CAUTION Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately befo re you put it in the printer.
Routine maintenance 47 5 e Pull off the protective cover. f Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit unt il you hear it lock into place. If you pu t it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically. CAUTION Make sure you insert the toner cartridge properly or it may separate from the drum unit.
Routine maintenance 48 5 h Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. Close the front cover of t he printer. Drum unit 5 This printer can print up to 12,000 pages 1 with one drum unit. 1 At 5% print coverage (A4 or Letter size).
Routine maintenance 49 5 Replacing the drum unit 5 Note We recommend that you clean the printer when you repla ce the drum unit. See Cleaning on page 52. Follow these steps to replace the drum unit. a Make sure that the printer is turne d on and the Drum LED is blinking.

Routine maintenance 52 5 Cleaning 5 Clean the outside and inside o f the printer regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure you clean the inside of the p rinter. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the p rinter with a dry, lint-free cloth.
Routine maintenance 53 5 c Wipe the outside of the printer with a so ft cloth to remove dust. d Remove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. e Wipe the inside of the paper tray with a soft cloth to remove dust. f Put the paper tray firmly back in the printer.
Routine maintenance 54 5 b Open the front cover of the printe r. c Pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the print er are extremely hot! Wait for the printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer.
Routine maintenance 55 5 d Wipe the scanner window with a dry, lint-fr ee cloth. e Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. f Close the front cover.
Routine maintenance 56 5 Cleaning the corona wire 5 If you are experiencing print quality p roblems, please clean the corona wire as follows: a Open the front cover of the printe r.
Routine maintenance 57 5 c Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by ge ntly sliding the blue tab from right to le ft and left to right several times. Return the tab to the home position ( a ) (1) before yo u put the drum unit back in the printer.

Troubleshooting 64 6 f Pull the tab toward you to open the rear chut e cover (1). g Pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. If the jammed paper cannot be pulled out easily, push down the tab with one hand as you gently pu ll the paper out with other.

Wait for the printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer. h Close the back cover. i Push the lock lever down and take the ton er cartridge out of the drum unit.

If the printout looks good, the problem is probably not the printer. Check the interface cable or try the printer on an other PC.
