To p rolong p rint he ad life, pro vide the best ink cartridge ec onomy, and mainta in print qual ity, you should k eep your machine connected to the pow er at al l times.
Chapter 1 8 Warn ing LED indicat ions 1 The W arning LED (Light Emittin g Diode) is a light that show s the DCP s tatus. The LCD sho ws the curren t machine status w hen the machi ne is id le. LCD display 1 LCD C ontra st 1 You can adju s t the LCD contrast for a sharper and more viv id displa y .

Chapter 2 10 NOTE When you are using Legal size paper, press and hol d the univers al guide r elease button (1) as you sli de out the front of the paper tra y . (Only availa ble for some countr i es.) d Fan the stack of paper well t o avoid paper jams and mis feeds.

Chapter 2 12 Loading env elo pes 2 Abo ut en ve lo pe s 2 Use envelope s that weig h between 80 to 95 gsm . Some envelopes need margin settings to be set in the applicat ion. Make sure you do a test print first bef ore printing mult iple envelo pes.

If th e envelope f laps are on the long edge, loa d the envel opes in the tray with the f lap on the left , as shown in the illu stration. Gently press a nd slide the pap er width guides (1) and paper len gth guide (2) to fit the size of the envelopes.
Chapter 2 14 Unprint able a rea 2 The printable area depends on the set tings i n the application y ou are usin g. The fi gures show th e unpr intable areas on cut -s heet pap er and env elopes. The machin e can print in the shaded area s of cut-s heet paper when the Borderle s s print feat ure is avai lable and turned on.

31 A A Replac ing the ink cartridges A Your mac hine is equipped with an in k dot counter. The ink dot counter monit ors the level of ink in each of the four c artridges. When the machine de tects an ink ca rtridg e is running out of ink, the machine will displ ay a message.

Open the scanne r cover and remov e any forei gn ob jects a nd paper scraps from inside the machin e. If the error message c ontinues, di sconnec t the machine from the po wer for sev eral minutes and r econnect i t.
Troubleshooti ng 41 B Ink Box Full The ink a bsorber box or flushing b ox is full. T hese componen ts are periodic mainten anc e items that m ay require r eplacement aft er a p eriod of time to ensure optimum performanc e from y our Brothe r machine.
42 No Paper Fed The machi ne is out of paper or paper is not c orrectly loaded in the pape r tray. Do one of the f ollowing: Re fill the pap er in the paper tray , and then pr ess Mono Start or Colo ur S tart . Re move and r eload the paper , then press Mono Start or Colo ur S tart .
Troubleshooti ng 43 B Paper Jam The paper is jamm ed in the ma chine. R emove the jam med pap er by followi ng the s teps in Print er jam or paper jam on page 44. M ake sure the paper le ngth guide is set to the correc t pape r size. DO NOT extend the paper tr ay whe n you load A5 or smaller size pape r.
44 Printer jam or pa per ja m B Loc at e and remove the jammed paper by foll owing these steps: a Unplug the mach ine f rom the electrical sock et. b Pull the paper tray (1) complet ely out of the mac hine. c Pull the two green lev ers inside th e machine towards you to rel ease the jammed paper.
Troubleshooti ng 45 B f M ove the print head (if necessar y) to take ou t any p aper remai ning in t his area. Make sur e that jammed paper is not lef t in the cor ners of the ma chine (1) and (2). IMPORTANT • DO NOT touch the encoder str ip (1). Doing this m ay cause damage to the machin e.
46 g Be sure to lo ok carefully insid e the machine (1) for any piec es of p aper. h Look inside the m achine fr om a lo wer angle, and mak e sure there are no pieces of pape r remaini ng. i Open the Jam Clear Cover (1) at the back of the mac hine. j Remove the jammed pape r.

48 c Pull the two green lev ers inside th e machine towards you to rel ease the jammed paper. d Place bot h hands under the plastic tabs on both sides of the mach ine and lift the scanner co v er into the open position. e Load one sheet of thick A4 or Let ter sized paper, such as glossy paper, deep into t he machine as shown i n the illustr ation.
