1 1 Using the documentation 1 Thank you for buyi ng a Brother machine! Reading the documentation will help you make the most of your cordless hand set. Symbols and conventions used in the documentation 1 The following symbols and conventions ar e used throughout the docu mentation.
General Information 2 1 Optional Cordless Handset 1 Your Brother machine can suppo rt 3 additional cordless hand sets for a total of 4 cordless handsets. If you have p urchased an optional cordless handset please fo llow the steps below to setup and registe r your optional cordless handset with the machine (base unit).
Chapter 1 3 b Place the battery in the correct position as shown below. c Slide the battery cover back on. Note • Be careful that you do not catch the battery connector cord. • After replacement, you should se t the date and time. (See Date a nd Time on page 20.

Chapter 1 5 Choosing a location 1 Choose a lo cation where t he temperat ure remains between 50 ° F and 95 ° F (10 ° and 35 ° C). DO NOT put the co rdless handset and cradle near heaters, air conditioners, water or chemicals. DO NOT expose the cordless handse t and cradle to direct sunlig ht, excessive heat, moisture, or dust.
General Information 6 1 Control panel overview 1 1 LCD (liquid crystal display) Displays messages on the screen to help you set up and use yo ur cordless handset. 2 Redial/Pause Redials any of the last 10 numbers you called. It also puts a pause in Quick-Dial numbers.

Chapter 2 9 c Press # on the control panel of your cordless handset. Any digits dialed after this will send tone signals. When you hang up, the cordless handset will return to the pulse dialing service. d Press ( Off ). Search 2 You can search for na mes you have stored in the Tel-Index memories.
Telephone 10 2 e Do one of the following: If you want to store the number, press a or b to choose Set Tel-Index . Press Menu/OK . (See Storing Tel- Index numbers from the Caller ID history on page 12.) If you want to delete the number , press a or b to choose Delete .
Chapter 2 11 Storing numbers for easy dialing 2 You can set up your cordless ha ndset for easy dialing. When you dial a Tel-Ind ex number, the LCD shows the name, if you stored it, o r the numbe r. Note If you lose electrical power, the Tel- Index numbers that are in the memory will not be lost.
Telephone 12 2 Storing Tel-Index numbe rs from the Caller ID history 2 If you have the Caller ID subscribe r service from your telephone company you can also store Tel- Index numb ers from incoming calls in the Caller ID history. (See Caller ID in the User’s Guide.
Chapter 2 13 Advanced operation 2 You can transfer a call, make an inter com call or use three-way calling. If you have optional cordless handsets you must register the handset with the machine (base unit). See Registering additional cordless handsets on page 3.
Telephone 14 2 Intercom calling 2 The intercom feature allows you to make internal calls between the cordless handset and the machine (base unit). If you have additional optional cordless handsets (4 max.) you can also make an intercom call to another cordless h andset.
15 3 On-screen programming 3 Your cordless handse t is designed to be easy to use with LCD on-screen pr ogramming using the menu keys. User-friendly programming helps you take full advantage o f all the menu selection s your cordless handse t has to offer.
Menu and Feature s 16 3 Menu Table 3 The menu table will help yo u understand the me nu selections and options that are found in the cordless handse t's programs. Chapter 3 17 Entering Text 3 When you are storing a name or a number in the Tel-Inde x memory, you may need to enter text into the cordless handset. Most dial pad keys have three or fo ur letters printed on keys. The keys for 0 , # and l do not have printed letters be cause they are used for special characters.
Menu and Feature s 18 3 General setup 3 Ring Volume 3 You can choose a range of ring volume levels, from High to Off. a Press d or c to adjust the v olume level. This setting will stay until you change it again. Note • If you choose Off, will appear on the LCD.

Menu and Feature s 20 3 LCD Contrast 3 You can adjust the LCD contrast for a sharper and more vivid display. If you are having difficulty reading the LCD, try changin g the contrast setting. a Press Menu/OK . b Press a or b to choose LCD Contrast . Press Menu/OK .
Chapter 3 21 Echo Control 3 Under some cond itions you may experie nce an echo when using the cordless handset. You can reduce or remove the echo by choosing a level in the echo control s etting from the control pa nel of the machine (b ase unit). It will take a mom ent for the level setting to change.
22 4 4 Troubleshooting 4 IMPORTANT For technical help, you must call the country where you bough t the cordless handset. Calls must be made from within that country. If you think there is a problem with your cordle ss handset, check the chart below and follow the troubleshooting tips.
Chapter 4 23 Error messages 4 As with any sophisticated o ffice product, errors ma y occur. If this happens, your cordless handset identifies the error and shows an e rror message. The m ost common error messages are shown below. You can correct most e rrors by yourself.

You can see the batt ery strength at the bottom right of the LCD. a Make sure the AC ada pter of the cradle or the machine (base unit) is conn ected to an AC power outlet.
Chapter 4 25 Clean the charger cont acts as follows: 4 a Unplug the cradle from the AC po wer outlet. b Clean the charger contacts ( 1) for both the cordless handset and the cradle with a cotton swab. Replacing the battery 4 If your battery performance is gettin g worse, make sure that you have charge d the battery correctly.
