INSTALLATION 17 2. Installation For first-time us ers, we recomm end that you carr y out a test pla cement, confined to a single room, before com mencing full installation . Th is will allow you to iden tif y and solve any cabling problems, and experiment with th e KVM Extend er Local Hub s ystem more conveniently.
INSTALLATION 18 2.2 Interconnection Cable Requirements To connect th e Local and Remote Units you wi ll need CATx (an y categor y 5, 5e, 6 or higher) cable terminated with RJ45 plugs . Ple ase note that shield ed cable i s advised to maintain regulatory EMC compliance.

INSTALLATION 23 Figure 5 Hub Port - front view Power Requirements In most cases, there is no need to connect the 5V PSU supply as each po rt independen tly takes its own power from the PS/2 keyboard connection to the host computer. Each Local Hub port normally takes power thro ugh the PS/2 keyboard conn ection to the host computer.
OPERATION 24 3. Operation 3.1 Overview The operation and configur ation of dual acce ss Standard, Serial an d Serial/Audio enabled systems is s lightly different . Please read the appro priate section for your system . Dual Access, with consoles at bot h the Remote Unit and Lo cal Hub port, oper ates on a first- come, first-serve d basis.
OPERATION 25 3.2 Operation of Dual Access Standard & Serial Local Hubs ACU1006DRA and ACU1006DSRA only Scroll Lock Function Standard and Serial Rem ote Units redefine the function of the Scr oll Lock key fo r use within the Extender system . You may need n ormal Scroll Lo ck activit y for a specific application.
OPERATION 26 Local Console Commands On a dual acces s system, you can issu e the follow ing commands at th e local cons ole: Command Key Sequence Activate Console Any key and (optionally) mouse action Gain control of CPU from remote console. OPERATION 27 3.3 Operation of Dual A ccess Audio/Serial Local Hubs ACU1006DVRA only The ‘Hot’ Key With these systems, keyboard ‘hot’ keys are used to carry out various functions. To enter these c ommands: 1. Press and releas e the initial ‘hot’ key.
OPERATION 28 Local Console Commands After pressing the in itial ‘hot’ key on the local keyboard, you can issue a number of commands by pressing additional keys. These co mmands allow you to start a private mode session on the local console or to reset the keyboard and mouse.
TROUBLESHOOTING 29 4. Troubleshooting 4.1 Video The image is not sharp, or is ba dly smeared. Check the Interc onnect cable bet ween the Rem ote Unit and Local Hub.
TROUBLESHOOTING 30 The PC won’t boot into the correct graphics mo de The extender includes DDC emulation for al l standard resolutions and there should not normally be any issues.
TROUBLESHOOTING 31 4.4 Keyboard & Mouse When I am typing, I get wrong or missing characters on the screen. Your keyboard may be in the wrong mode . Use the appropr iate commands to reset the keyboard an d mouse as described in th e manual supplied with your Remote Unit.
TROUBLESHOOTING 32 4.5 General Questions Is it possible to use a cable longer than 300m? It might be possible to use a cable of up to 500m at lower resolutions.

APPENDIX B: AUDIO/SERIAL PORTS 42 Audio Port Configuration The audio interf ace is line-level and is d esigned to take the output from a sound card (or other line-level) source and be connected to a set of powered speakers at the other end of the link .
