1 P R ODUCT O VERVIEW Preface 3Com Switch 8800 Family of Routing Switches (hereinafter referr ed to as Switch 8800 Family) are intelligent, multi-laye r modular LAN switches is ideal for enterprise envir onments where non-stop avai lability of critical applications and the highest performance, security , and granular control are r equired.

General Architecture 13 The Switch 8807 uses a passive backplane, which provides five I/O module interfaces, two fabric interfaces, one fan interface, and three -48V power interfaces (two for PSUs and one for PoE entry module).
14 C HAPTER 1: P RODUCT O VERVIEW ■ A Switch 8800 suppor ts up to 4500 W (220 V)/2250 W (110 V) power to its PDs. It determines whethe r to deliver power to a ne wly detected PD depending on the power it currently supplied.
General Architecture 15 Ta b l e 2 describes typical equipment configurat ions and specifications of exter nal PoE power system. The exter nal PoE power system has monitor fun ction. It provides one system monitoring module, one RS232 and two R S 485 monitoring interfaces.

Fabric Modules 23 The AUX port uses an R J-45 connector . The port can serve as a backup port f or the Console port to connect a background terminal, or directly connect a modem device, for remote system debugging , configuration, maintenance and management .

Examining Installation Site 49 Cleanness Requiremen ts Dust is a hazar d to the operating safety of the switch. The indoor dust accumulated on the chassis can cause electr ostatic absorption, which may r esult in the poor co ntact of the conn ector or me tal cont act point.
50 C HAPTER 3: I NSTALLATION P REPARATION Power Supply Requirements The Switch 8800 Family adopts redundant PSUs for AC PSU: Rated voltage: 100 V AC to 240 V AC, 50 Hz or 60 Hz Maximum tolerance: 90 V.
4 S WITCH I NSTALLATION The Switch 8800 Family shall be installed indoors in a fixed place. Confirming Installation Pre paration ■ Make sure that you have read Chapter 3 Installation Preparation carefully . ■ All requir e ments mentioned in Chapter 3 Installation Preparation have been met.

Connecting PGND Wire and Power Cord 61 Connecting PoE Power Cord The Switch 8807/Switch 8810/Switch 8814 uses PSE4500 -A external Po E power supply , which is connected to the switch through the PoE module at the front bottom of the switch to provide power to PDs (powered devices) under the switch.

Installing PoE Lightn ing Protection Box 63 c CAUTION: In case of bodily injuries, do not touch any naked wi re, terminal or other parts of the produ ct with hazardou s voltage labels. Step 1: Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap, making sure that it makes good skin contact; take the fan tray out from the packing bag.

Connecting Interface Cables 65 Connecting Interface Cables Connecting Console Cable Introdu ction Console cable is an 8-core shielded cable. At on e end of the cable is a crimped RJ-45 connector that is to be plugg ed into the console port of the switch.

When conne cting the con sole cable, fir st connect the DB 9/DB25 end to th e PC serial port and then the RJ45 end to t he console port of the swit ch.

6 S WITCH M ONITORING AND M AINTENANCE Monitoring the Switch Although the Switch 8800 Family has undergo ne a comprehensive and strict factory test before delivery , there might be some fault occurring due to improper installation. This chapter describes how to troubleshoot the Switch 8800 Family .
78 C HAPTER 6: S WITCH M ONITOR ING AND M AINTENANCE ■ The Input LED (green) and Output LED (gr een) stay ON, but the display power command shows that the PSU is not in position (b ut the other PSU operates normally). Such a problem is likely caused becau se of the poor contact between the PSU and the back plane due to a badly seated PSU.
Hardware Maintenance 79 Ha rd w a re Maintenance Replacing AC PSU c CAUTION: The PSU of the Switch 8800 Family is hot-swappable. When installing or replacing a PSU while power is being supplied, you must take care in the operation procedur es and safety with electricity .

82 C HAPTER 6: S WITCH M ONITOR ING AND M AINTENANCE Replacing and Cleaning the Air Filter of Chassis c CAUTION: Y ou are strongly recommended to clean the air filter semimonthly to guarantee adequate ventilation. The air filter of the Switch 8800 Family is installed at the air intake vents of the chassis.
Hardware Maintenance 83 Removing a module Step 1: W ear the ESD-pre ventive wrist strap and unscrew the captive screws on the module with a flat head screwdriver . Step 2: Hold the ejector levers on th e module with both hands and pr ess them outward to separate the locking pin of the module fr om the backplane.
84 C HAPTER 6: S WITCH M ONITOR ING AND M AINTENANCE c CAUTION: When you replace the fan t ray of an operating switch, pull the fan tray out from the chassis only after the fans stop rotating. In this ca se, there is still the possibility that fans are still rotating.

Software Upgrade 87 XModem completes transmission by the re ceiving pr og ram (receiver) and the sending program (sender). In XModem, the transmission begins with the sending of negotiat ion characters from the re ceiver for the purpose of check mode negotiation.
