4 SLOPE OPERA TION 1. Slopes are a maj or fact or rel ated to loss of control and tip -over acc idents wh ich can res ult in se vere inju ry or death. Al l slop es require ex tra cauti on. If you canno t back up the slop e or if you fee l uneasy on it, do not mow i t.

6 SECTION 2: SLOPE GAUGE Use this pag e as a guide to de termine s lopes wher e you may no t operate sa fely. Do not operate your lawn mower on such sl opes.
7 SECTION 3: KNOW YOUR Z-SERIES NOTE: Refer ence to ri ght or left han d side of the mow er is obse rved fro m the operati ng positio n. Figure 1 WARNING: Be familiar w ith all controls and their proper operation. Know how to stop the mach ine and dise ngage them quickly.
8 Electric PTO (Power Take-Off) Switch The PTO s witch is lo cated on the right con trol panel and it is use d to control the en gageme nt of the cutting blades. W hen the knob is up, the cu tting blades are engaged. Wh en the kno b is down, the c utting blade s are dise ngaged.
9 Figure 6 Brake P edal and Parking Brake P edal The brake pe dal is located on the lower le ft side of th e control tower and it i s used to e ngage the br ake in o rder to slow down or sto p the unit. It also is used to en gage the parking br ake. See Fig ure 1 and Figur e 7.
10 The spee d control ba r also aid s the drive han dles i n making “ perfect U-turns ” . To move for ward grasp bo th drive ha ndles and the speed control bar at the same time, the n release t he left drive ha ndle to turn le ft and then gras p it again to continu e stra ight ah ead or relea se the right driv e handle to turn r ight.
11 NOTE: The Z-Serie s speed i s bas ed on th e positi on of the driv e handles . Push the handles forward to increa se speed and back towar d neutral for slower speeds. Driving On Slopes Before ope rating the Z-Seri es on any slop e: • Use the SLOPE GAUGE to dete rmine i f the sl ope is safe for ope ration.
12 Fig ure 10 SECTION 5: MAKING ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting the Mower Deck Height • To push or pull t he lift leve r, depres s and hold the button. Refer to Figure 5. • Move the ha ndle up/down to the desire d location . • Rele ase button at t he de sired posit ion.
13 Checking the Brake Adjustment • Position th e Z-Serie s on a level surfac e and move the throttl e lever to the slo west posit ion (turtle) . • Stop the eng ine, remov e the key from the ignition, and enga ge the parking brake. • Relea se both hydrau lic rel ief lever s.

18 SECTION 7: MAINTAINING MOWER DECK Checking T he Lev el Of The Mow e r Deck Side t o Side • Position th e Z-Serie s on a hard and level surfac e and place th e PTO switc h in the OFF pos ition. • Engag e the park ing brak e and turn the ig nition switch to the OFF pos ition and remove key.
19 Removing Th e Mower Deck WARNING: Do not remove deck immedi- ately afte r operating the tractor. Allow the engine and other moving parts ample time to cool down. • Posit ion t he Z- Series on a hard f lat surfac e and engage the par king brak e. • Move the li ft handle to the L position.
