8 En FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW 1 DIMMER Selects from three dif ferent lev els of brightness for the front panel display: bright, dim and auto. For aut o setting, brightness is automatically set to l o w only during playback. 2 HDMI Switches between the HDM I resolution settings or turns off the HDMI mode (see page 36).

CONNECTIONS 10 En Be sure to turn off this unit and unplug the power supply cable, before you make or change connections. • Depending on the component you want to connect, there are various ways to make connections. Possible connections are described below.

12 En CONNECTIONS ■ Composite video jac k <A> Connect VIDEO OUT (VIDEO) jack of th is unit to the video input jack of your A V recei ver , and then to that of your TV using the suppl ied video pin cable.
13 En CONNECTIONS English ■ HDMI video output This unit is compatible with the follo wing video formats: 480p/60 Hz, 576p/50 Hz, 720p/50 Hz, 60 Hz, 10 80i/50 Hz, 60 Hz, and 1080p/50 Hz, 60 Hz.
14 En CONNECTIONS After all other connections ar e complete , plug the supplie d power cable into MAINS of this unit and then plug the power cable to an A C outlet.
15 En GETTING STARTED English y If the settings you hav e made are inappropriate, you can always reset all option s and your personal settings to the initial fac tory settings. For details, see “Resetting the system” on page 30. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cov er off.

17 En GETTING STARTED English Y ou can select your o wn prefer red language settings. This unit will automatica lly switch to your preferred language for you whene ver you load a disc. If the language selected is not av ailable on the disc, th e default language of the disc will be used instead.
DISC OPERATION 18 En • Unless otherwise specified, all operations described here are carried out using the su pplied remote control. • If the inhibition ic on ( or “Prohibit” ) appears on the TV screen when you press a button, the function for that button is not av ailable on the current disc or at the current time.
19 En DISC OPERATION English Searc h ing bac kward/forwar d 1 Press SLO W / SEARCH ( 22 / 33 ) . • For slow search, press P A USE ( 8 ) to pause playback before pressing SLO W / SEARCH ( 22 / 33 ) . 2 While searching, press SLO W / SEARCH ( 22 / 33 ) repeatedly to select the desired speed.
20 En DISC OPERATION Y ou can c ustomize the pla yback o rder for t racks st ored in the disc. This unit supports a maximum of 20 programmed tracks. 1 Press ST OP ( 7 ) to stop playback if necessary . 2 Press PR OG . ➜ The program setup menu appears on the TV screen.
21 En DISC OPERATION English Using the Video CD playbac k control (PBC) menu (VCD/SVCD) 1 Press MENU to turn on the PBC function. ➜ The disc menu appears on the TV screen. • Depending on the disc, the disc menu may appear once you load the disc. 2 Use SKIP ( l 22 / 33 l ) or the numeric b uttons (0-9) to select a playback option.

23 En DISC OPERATION English Sharpness Mid Set this to adjust the sh arpness of the image for the intermediate fre quencies. Sharpness High Set this to adjust the sharpne ss of the image for the hig h frequencies. DNR Set this to reduce video noise. Gamma Set this to adjust the intens ity of the picture non-linearly .
24 En DISC OPERATION If the disc contains multi-language optio ns, you can select audio/subtitle languages. Languages available for each disc may v ary .
25 En DISC OPERATION English Y ou can select a track in a specific group for D VD-Audio discs and a track/file in a folder for data disc. Selecting a group (D VD-Audio) 1 Press GRO UP . ➜ A group icon appears on the TV screen. 2 Use / or the numeric b uttons (0-9) to select a group number .
26 En DISC OPERATION 1 Press ST OP ( 7 ) to stop playback. 2 Press MUL TI / 2CH . ➜ MUL TI indicator lights up when the multi-channel area is selecte d. Y ou can play MP3, WMA, Di vX ® and JPEG f iles on a personally recorded CD-R/R W disc or commercial CD.

29 En SETUP MENU English Selecting D VD-A udio mode Some D VD-Audio discs cont ain the DVD-V ideo content in addition to the D VD-Audio content. Y ou can select D VD-Audio or DVD-V ideo mode. • Select [D VD-Audio mode] in [GENERAL] menu. D VD-Audio Select this to play back both D VD-Audio and D VD-V ideo contents.
30 En SETUP MENU 2 Enter your old four-digit password using the numeric b uttons (0-9) . • When doing this for the first time, enter “2580”. ➜ If the password is correct, the submenu appears . 3 Enter the new four -digit password using the numeric b uttons (0-9) .
31 En SETUP MENU English Setting the analog output Set the analog output to matc h the playback capability of this unit. • Select [Analog Ou tput] in [A UDIO] menu. Stereo Select this to change channel outp ut to stereo, which only deliv ers sound from the two f ront speakers.
32 En SETUP MENU Setting speaker siz es Y ou can set t he sizes fo r individual speakers. • Select [Size] in [SPEAKER] menu. Front L/R Set the sizes for front L/R speakers. Large Select this if the connected speakers are lar ge. Small Select this if the connected speakers are small.

36 En SETUP MENU Switching the SCAR T video out (U .K., Europe, and Russia models only) Select this setting to toggl e the video signal output from the A V terminal between CV BS (composite video) and RGB. • Select [Scart V ideo Out] in [VIDEO] menu.
