It does not function in a simple system containi ng only an Auto Gen Start and a generator . The Au to Gen Start requires several other compo n ents for configuration and operation.

Installing the Auto Gen Start 975-0082-01-01 2–9 Connecting the genera tor T o connect the Auto Gen S tart to a generator , you must identify the start wiring configuration of the generator yo u wan t to use. Generators must be auto-start capable, and generators equipped with remote operation connections are ideal.

Installation 2–20 975-0082-01-01 T ype 11 T ype 1 1 is a two-wire run mode configuration intended for Kohler generators. It requires only two wires and one relay to control the generator . Relay 1 closes momentarily once to start the generator , and closes momentarily again to stop the generator .

Installation 2–24 975-0082-01-01 If your generator battery does not ha ve the required voltage, any 12V or 24V power source will suit this purpose. If an alternate power source is used, the negative of the po wer so urce must be connect to the other contact of the switch.

Installation 2–26 975-0082-01-01 Connecting the control panel and other network-enabled devices T o connect the Auto Gen S tart to a System Control Panel or another network-enabled device, plug a Xantrex network cable or equivalent from another device into one of t he network connectors on th e bo ttom p ane l of the Auto Gen S tart.
3 Configur ation Chapter 3 contains inform ation and procedures for configuring the Automatic Gene rator S tart. It describes how you can view the Auto Gen S tart menu on the System Control Panel , and how you can change Auto Gen S tart settings using the System Control Panel .
Configuration 3–2 975-0082-01-01 Configuring the Auto Gen Start The Auto Gen Start has a number of se ttings that you must configure to ensure that the generator automatica lly starts and stops under the right conditions and at the right time.
Configuring the Auto Gen Start 975-0082-01-01 3–3 Changing Auto Gen Start settings using the System Control P a nel If you need to change an Auto Gen St art setting, use the buttons on the System Control Panel to perform three basic steps: 1. V iew the Select Device menu.

T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–9 A GS Mode Purpose “AGS Mode” is a chan geable setting that contro ls the current oper ating mode of the Auto Gen Start. When to use Y ou should change “AGS Mod e” when you want to switch between automatic generator control an d manual generator control.
Configuration 3–10 975-0082-01-01 • External Shutdown—Whe n the Auto Gen Start is connected to a sensor or meter (a moisture detector , for example) wired to contacts 5 and 6 of the 20-contact connector , it stops the generator when the device is activa ted.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–11 Q T Enable Full name Quiet T ime Enable Purpose “QT Enable” enables or disables the Quiet T ime functionality of the Auto Gen Start. “QT Enable” applies only when the Au to Gen Start is in Automatic mode.
Configuration 3–12 975-0082-01-01 Use the Quiet T ime feature to ensure that the generator will not run during the night, or to comply with “Qui et T ime” guidelines at R V parks and campgrounds.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–13 Q T End Full name Quiet T ime End Purpose “QT End” is a changeable settin g that defines the end of quiet time. This setting also requires you to set “QT Begin”. When to use “QT End” functions onl y if th e Auto Gen S tart is in Automatic mode.
Configuration 3–14 975-0082-01-01 State of char ge information When a DC Monitor is in stalled, you can monitor the batteries’ state of charge on the System screen or inverter/char ger menu. Outcomes If you set “S tart SOC” too high, the generator will start more frequently than is convenient.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–15 Whenever the generator starts automatically in response to “Start DCV”, it will stop when the battery vol ta ge reaches the Stop Battery V oltage (“StopBattV”) setting.
Configuration 3–16 975-0082-01-01 Enable T emp2 Full name Enable Thermostat 2. Purpose “Enable T emp2” is intended to be used when the Auto Gen S tart is connected to a second thermostat. All information and procedures for “Enable T emp1” also app l y for “ Enable T emp2”.

Configuration 3–20 975-0082-01-01 Purpose “Stop SOC” is a changeable settin g that allows you to set the Auto Gen Start to stop the generator when th e batteries reach a pre-set state of charge. When to use In Automatic mode, the Auto Ge n Start will stop the generator when the batteries’ state of charge equals the “S top SOC” setting.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–21 When to use In Automatic mode, the Auto Gen Start will st art the generator when the system battery voltage (as measured by the inverter/charger) falls below the “StartV :15min” setting for 15 minutes.
Configuration 3–22 975-0082-01-01 If the Auto Gen S tart is set to Automatic mode, then the Auto Gen S tart will start the generator when the system battery voltage (as measured by the inverter/charger) falls below th e “S tartV :2hr” setting for 2 hours.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–23 S topping conditions Whenever the generator starts automa tically based on the Starting Battery V o ltage, it will shut off once the Stopping Battery V oltage has been reached.

T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–29 Max Run Time Full name Maximum Generator Run T ime Purpose The Max Run T ime setting allows you to set a limit on how long the generator will run.
Configuration 3–30 975-0082-01-01 This setting also requires you to set an Exercise Duration (see “Exercise Dur” on page 3–30) and an Exercise T ime (see “Exercise T ime” on page 3–31). When to use Generators need to run regularl y in order to maintain mechanical health and performance.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–31 Exercise Time Purpose “Exercise T ime” allows you to set the time of day that the Auto Gen Start exercises the generator . This setting also requires you to set an Exercise Period and an Exercise Duration.
Configuration 3–32 975-0082-01-01 Some diesel generators require preheatin g of their glow plug s before start cranking. Setting “Relay3” to Preheat enables Relay 3 to perform this function in addition to Relay 1.
T he Auto Gen Start Menu 975-0082-01-01 3–33 Crank Retry Time Purpose “Crank Retry T ime” specifies the le ngth of time the Start relay is engaged (and cranking the starter motor) for th e second and subsequent attempts to start the generator , in cases when the generator fails to start on the first attempt.

4 Oper ation Chapter 4 describes the operation of the Auto Gen S tart and how to get the most from its features. This includes information about: • using the Auto Gen S tart for both manual and automatic generator control. • setting Quiet T ime. • displaying the advanced Auto Gen S t art menu.
Operation 4–2 975-0082-01-01 Starting and Stopping the Generator Y ou can use the Auto Gen S tart to start the generator manually (on demand, using the System Cont rol Panel) and automat ically (in response to an electrical system condition).
Setting Quiet T ime 975-0082-01-01 4–3 Setting Quiet Time Use the Quiet T ime feature to ensure that the Auto Gen S tart will not start the generator during the ni ght, or during times that might clash with “Quiet T ime” guidelines at R V parks and campgrounds.

The Auto Gen Start basic menu is displayed by de fault. It lists status information and settings you may have to adjust routinely .
Operation 4–6 975-0082-01-01 Changing System Modes The system modes described in this section affect the behavior of the Auto Gen Start and every Xanbus-enabled device in the system.
Changing System Modes 975-0082-01-01 4–7 Operating mode Characteristics Operating mode is the default mode of the Auto Gen S tart. In Operating mode, the Auto Gen Start communicat es on the netwo rk, responds to signal input, and can start and stop the generator automa tically .
Operation 4–8 975-0082-01-01 Hibernate mode Characteristi cs Hibernate mode remove s power from t he Auto Gen S tart and a ll Xanbus- enabled devices on the Xanbus system . The Auto Gen S t art suspends all operations (including starting and st opping the generator) until power is restored to the network.
5 T r oubleshooting Chapter 5 contains inform ation and procedures to troubleshoot the Auto Gen Start, including tables of warnings and faults for your reference.
T roubleshooting 5–2 975-0082-01-01 F aults and W arnings Under certain conditions, the Auto Gen Start generates a fault or warning message. These messages appear on th e System Control Panel. This section describes how to respond to fault and warning messages when they appear .

The red Fault light also comes on, an d the System Control Panel displays a fault message. The Auto Gen S tart remembers the AGS Mo de that it was in at the time it detected the fault.

Generator Auto Start Requirements and Types B–2 975-0082-01-01 Recommended F eatures In order for the generator to be au tomatically started by the Auto Gen Start, it must include electric start a nd an automatic choke. An automatic primer system may also be required on natural gas and propane po w ered generators.
Generator Starting T ypes 975-0082-01-01 B–3 Tw o w i r e The two-wire type is suitable for gene rators that are fully automatic. This merely requires two wires to be conn ected together for the generator to start and run. Separating the wires stops the generator .
