Introduction Thank you for purchas ing the Xant rex 500 Inverter. The 500 Inverter is part of a f amily of adv anced, high- performance po wer inverters from Xantrex, the leader in the field of high-freq uency inverter des ign.
2 Important Safety Information If the 500 Inverter is connected or used incorrectly , hazardous cond itions may be created . Read and save this safety information, and pay special atten tio n to all Caution and W arning statements in the guide and on the inverter itself.
Wa rn i ng ! Risk of f ire o r explosion. The 500 Inverter cont ains components that tend to produce arcs or sparks. T o prevent fire or explosion, do not install the inverter in compartments containing b atteries or flammable materials or in locations that require ignition - protected equipment.
Caution! Risk of damag e to the 500 Inverter. Reverse battery polarity (negative connected to positive; positive conn ected to negative) will damage the 500 Inverter, and it will requir e servicing. Damage caused by reverse polarity is not covered by your warr anty .
3 Xantrex 500 Inverter Features This section des cribes the main features o f the 500 Inverter. Figure 1 s hows the i nverter’ s AC panel. Figure 1 AC Panel on the 500 Inverter (Europe an AC Outlet) ➀ AC Outlet An AC outlet is located o n one end of the inverter .
When the inver ter is connected to a DC p ower source and the On/Standby switch is on, AC power is available at the outlet. ➂ Power Light The green PWR light is on all the time when the On/Standby switch is on.
AC Outlets Depending on your g eographic lo cation, your 50 0 Inverter will have one of the following AC outlets. Figure 2 European AC Outlet Figure 3 Briti sh AC Outlet Figure 4 Australian and New .
4 Connecting the 500 Inverter This secti on explains ho w to connect t he 500 Inverter. Choosing a Location For the bes t performance, choose a l ocation that i s: • Dry Do not expose the inverter to water drip or spray . • Cool Operate the inverter in a m bient temperatures between 0° C and 40° C (32 ° F and 100° F).
Connecting t he 500 Inverter to DC Power W a rni ng! Corros ive materials and energy hazard. T o reduce the risk o f irritation and burns , wear protective eyewear and clothing when you work with batteries. T ake special care to ensure that metal tools or personal ob jects like r ings or watch es do not contact the battery terminals.
Y ou can make a temporary or a permanent connection between the inverter an d the 12 volt DC power s o urce. • Use the battery clip wire assem bly to make a temporary connection ( page 1 1 ). • Hardwire the inverter to the battery to make a permanent con nection ( page 13 ).
Using the Battery Clip Wire A ssembly W a rni ng! Corros ive materials and energy hazard. T o reduce the risk o f irritation and burns , wear protective eyewear and clothing when you work with batteries. T ake special care to ensure that metal tools or personal ob jects like rings or watc hes do not contact the battery terminals.
T o connect the inverter to a 12 volt bat tery us ing t he batt ery clip wire assembly: 1. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter . 2. Place the red rin g connector on the r ed (positive +) DC terminal, and then screw the red nut on until it is snug.
Hardwiring the I n verte r to the Battery A hardwired installation is illu strated in Figur e 6 . Figure 6 Hardwiring the 500 Inverter to a 12 V olt Battery T o hardwire the inverter to a 12 volt battery: 1. Cut the clips off the cable clip wire assembly .
2. Us ing 8.4m m 2 (8 A WG) wire or heavier, exten d the power cord if you need to, to a maximum total len gth of 2 meters (6.5 fe et ) including the existin g 500 Inverter power cord length. Solder all connections and m ake sure they are properly insulated by using electrical tape or heat shr inkable tubi ng.
6. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter . 7. Place the red rin g connector on the r ed (positive +) DC terminal on the inv erter , and then s crew the red nut o n.
5 Operating the 500 Inverter This secti on describes normal operat ion as well as several problems th at could occur when you use the inverter . If you have a prob lem, see “T roubleshooti ng” on page 20 .
that occurs whe n the engine starts may trigger a low volta g e shutdo wn. • AC Overload Shutdown If you connect an AC load rated hi gher than 50 0 watts or 2.2 amps or that draws excessive sur ge power , the 500 Inverter shuts down. The PWR light stays on, and the light comes on to indicate that the inver ter is overloaded.
Interferenc e With Electronic Equipment Most AC products operate with the 500 Inverter as they would wi th househo ld AC power with the fo llowing exceptions. Buzzing Sou nd Some inexpe nsive stereo sys tems and “boom boxes” have inadequ ate i ntern al power su ppl y filtering and buzz slightly when powered by the 500 Inverter.
6 Battery Operating T ime The battery operating ti me of the 500 Inverter depends on the char ge level of the battery , battery capacity , and the amou nt of po wer dra wn by th e parti cular A C load. W ith a typical vehicle battery an d a 300 watt load, y ou can expect one or mor e hours of operating ti me.
7 T r oubleshooting This secti on descri bes problems you could en counter , as well as symptoms, possible causes, and various remedies. The AC load will not opera t e; red light is on. Sympt om An AC load i s plu gged in or tur ned on, operates for on e to ten se conds , and then shuts do w n.
Sympt om The AC load runs for more than one min ute, the alarm sounds , and the light comes o n. The inv erter is warm or hot to touch . The alarm may sound. The AC load will not operate; no inverter lights are on. Sympt om The inverter has been conn ected to the 12 vo lt battery and the b attery is char ged, but the inverter d oes not work.
Measured inver ter output voltage is too low . Sympt om The AC voltmeter reading is 5 to 15 volts too low . Battery operating time is less than expected. Sympt om The inverter r uns for a wh ile, and th en the light comes on. The inver ter is cool o r warm to tou ch.
