6 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Installing Installation is a quick, three-step process: ■ Install the software ■ Connect the scanner ■ Check out your scanner S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the software: 1.
S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 7 3. On the Visioneer installation menu, select Install ScanSoft P aperP ort . 4. On the P aperP or t Setup window , click N ext . 5. Read the ScanSoft license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement , and then click N ext .

S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 15. When you see the following Connect Scanner window , do NOT click OK . Leave the window open and proceed to the next section, “S tep 2: Connect the Scanner”.
10 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER Y our OneT ouch 9420 scanner connects to any av ailable USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 por t. Check your computer’ s user guide for por t locations. T o connect the scanner to a USB 1.
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 11 3. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port on the computer . 4. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the scanner ’ s USB por t. If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly .
12 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. Plug the power adapter cable into the power jack on the back of the scanner and then plug the power adapter into an A C (wall) outlet. The following diagram shows the scanner connected to a computer.
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 13 6. When the software is finished loading, r eturn to the Connect Scanner window and click OK . The scanner’ s status light is green when the scanner and computer are communicating properly . 7. On the Install Completed window , click Close .
14 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER After installing the scanner and softwar e, you will see a OneT ouch icon on the Windows taskbar (at the bottom right corner of the computer screen). If the scanner is properly connected, the icon looks like the one pictured below .
S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER 15 I F THE S CANNER I S N OT P ROPERLY C ONNECTED If the scanner is not properly connected, check for one of these possible problems: • Is a cable loose or not plugged in securely? Inspect all cable connections. Make sure all the cables are plugged in secur ely .
16 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE R EGISTER Y OUR S CANNER Registering your scanner is ver y important because it pr ovides you with access to our free telephone suppor t ser vice. Registration also gives you free access to software updates for your scanner .
R EGISTER Y OUR S CANNER 17 The serial number is located on the underside of the scanner. After registration is complete you will receive an email message with your RegID. Y our RegID is ver y important because y ou will need it when accessing free telephone suppor t, or checking for future online updates.

S CAN P APER D OCUMENTS WITH THE S CANNER B UTTONS 19 2. Close the document cover and press one of the O neT ouch buttons. The scanner star ts scanning the item. A Scan pr ogress window opens. T o Cancel scanning, click the Cancel button. When the scan is complete, a “ thumbnail” of the scanned image appears in the destination application.

S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN 21 S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN Scanning from the button panel on the scr een works just like pressing a scanner button. The scanner scans the item, and then sends the image to the destination associated with the button.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 23 T o scan an item fr om P aperP ort: 1. Open the scanner cover and place an item face down on the glass. Align the edge of the item with the arr ow at the upper-left corner of the glass and then close the cover .
24 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. Click the Scan icon on the PaperP ort command bar . The F olders pane is replaced by the Scan pane. 4. F rom the Scanner list, select Visioneer 9420 . 5. In the “Scan what?” section, choose Document or Photograph .
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 25 S CANNING FROM THE B ASIC I NTERFACE The Basic Interface can scan a previe w of the image so you can adjust its appearance before scanning the fi nal image. After adjusting the appearance, you click the Scan button on the B asic Interface (not on the scanner) to scan the item.
26 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. T o choose another r esolution, use the Resolution (DPI) menu. Y ou can also change the pictur e type again, for example, fr om color to grayscale, and you can change the paper siz e from the P aper Size menu.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 29 S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE The Advanced Interface has more options for scanning than the B asic Interface. 1. Open the Basic Interface as described in the section “Scanning from the Basic Interface” on page 25.
30 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. Click one of the icons to select a confi guration. F or example, select Color Confi gurations and then select C ustom to scan a color item with the pr eset Custom scan settings. The configuration settings appear as a list.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 31 10. When you ’ re finished scanning items, click Done to close the Advanced Interface. If the Single page items check box is selected on the PaperP ort desktop, the item appears as a thumbnail on the desktop .
32 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING 35 MM S LIDES AND N EGATIVES Y our 9420 O neT ouch scanner is specially designed to s can 35mm slides and negatives. Y ou can scan both positiv e and negative film images. A B RIEF E XPLANATION Y our scanner has sensors that captur e the image of the item being scanned.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 33 2. T o scan a 35mm slide , first position the 35mm mask on the glass. The mask has one square corner . Align that corner with the arr ow on the scanner body . Make sure that the text on the 35mm mask faces up so the slide fi ts properly in the mask.
34 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The 35mm negative mask also has a calibration slot. D o not place items to be scanned in the calibration slot. Y ou ’ re now ready to scan the slide or negative using the PaperP or t Advanced Interface.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 35 4. Click the Scan button in the Scan pane. The Basic Interface or Advanced Interface opens, depending on which one you used last. That is, if you used the Advanced Interface the last time you scanned fr om P aperP or t, then it will open.

Click P review to preview the image and adjust settings as needed. 8. See “ Adjusting the Image on the Advanced Interface” on page 83 for details about adjusting settings.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 37 W HEN Y OU ’ RE F INISHED S CANNING T RANSPARENCIES 1. Remove the slide or negative from its mask. 2. S tore the mask in its protective bag. 3. Later , when you re-open the Advanced Interface, make sure to choose Scan Reflective U sing to reset P aperP ort for scanning paper items.
38 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S ELECTING P APER P ORT S ETTINGS Clicking the Settings option on the PaperP or t Scan panel displays the Settings dialog box where you can change the naming of scanned items and their file type.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 39 ■ Enter name or select date format —Y ou have two basic options for the naming of scanned items: a text name, or a date. T o give scanned items a text name, type the name in the bo x. For example, to name your scanned items P hotograph, type the word Photogr aph in the box.
40 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ File type —click the menu arrow and choose the file type for your scanned items, such as .jpg, .txt, or .bmp . Y our scanned items are then converted to that fi le type and placed on the PaperP or t Desktop.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 41 O N THE P APER P ORT D ESKTOP ■ U nless you changed it with the S ettings option, the name of the scanned image is the day , date, and number of scanned items that day . F or example, the second item scanned on a day is follo wed by a (2), the third by a (3) and so on.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 43 4. F rom the Scanner dr op-down list, select WIA - Visioneer 9420 . 5. In the “Scan what?” section, choose Document or Photograph . 6. Click Settings to view , and optionally change the format for the scanned item ’ s file name and the file type.

Adjust the settings of the previewed image: ■ Change the button selection for the type of item. ■ Adjust the custom settings. ■ Change the size of the scanned image. Click and hold the mouse pointer over one of the four sizing-boxes on the corners of the previewed image.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 45 Brightness and Contrast —Drag the sliders to the right or left to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scanned image. The Contrast setting does not apply to Black and White picture or text . Resolution (DPI) —Choose the dots per inch (dpi) of r esolution from the drop-down list.

The OneT ouch Pr operties window then opens to the settings for that button. Right-click on a button (for example, the Scan button) and the Properties window opens for that button.
48 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH P ROPERTIES W INDOW The OneT ouch Properties window is where you can select ne w settings for the buttons. The tabs across the top of the windo w correspond to the buttons on the scanner .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 49 The settings on the Properties window are: Select Destination —the list of applications that can open to display the scanned image for the selected button. T o confi gure the list of available applications, click the O ptions tab at the top of the dialog bo x and select the desired options.
50 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of fi le formats for the scanned image for the selected button. The formats are based on the type of destination application you select. The button names indicate their fi le types.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 51 T o select new settings for the Scanner B utton: 1. Click the tab of the button y ou want to change. Each button has its own settings. So, as you click the tabs, the available settings on the window change to sho w them for each button.
52 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S ETTING D ESTINATION A PPLICATION P ROPERTIES The different types of Destination Applications have various proper ties that you can select. 1. On the OneT ouch Pr operties window , click a Destination Application.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 P APER P ORT P ROPERTIES These properties apply to PaperP or t, and are for designating the folder to receive your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder where you want the file of the scanned image to be located.
54 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W ord, Excel, Adobe Reader , and the other applications indicated b y their icons in the list. The properties apply to the OCR settings for the applications.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 55 3. Click Browse to find the application you want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B rowse button, steps 1, and 2 on the dialog box are automatically fi lled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.

If your computer is running Windows XP and has a CD burner attached to it, you also use this dialog bo x to star t the Burn to CD process.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 59 3. If you have a CD burner attached to y our computer , the option Sho w message when ready to burn 5" CD (700MB) , should be selected. Y ou ’ll see a message when it’ s time to click the Burn CD button.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 61 S ELECTING F ILE F ORMAT O PTIONS The option that you select determines the fi le format of the scanned document. Appropriate format options and fi le types are available for the type of Destination Application selected for the button.
62 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The PDF format is often used to cr eate images of text pages. Y ou may want to select PDF as the page format when scanning text pages that do not require OCR processing or other processing.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 63 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option also selects OCR pr ocessing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text for mat selected, the text por tions of the document are automatically conver ted to editable text.
64 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. Choose the file type —Simple T ext or Rich T ext F ormat—t hat you want for the text format. Y our selection of a fi le type per tains only to the button currently selected on the OneT ouch Properties window .

Auto orient page —if necessar y , the scanned text page is automatically rotated so the text displays on the scr een correctly Single column output —displays the scanned text as a single running column, ev en if the original page had multiple columns 4.

S ti Ev ent Forwarding is for using another application ’ s interface for scanning. The OneT ouch Event F or warding dialog box appears so you can select which application to use to continue scanning.
68 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The scan configurations are where you select the scanning r esolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 69 buttons set for text editing applications. Thus, you can create specific sets of scan confi gurations for specific functions and they appear only when appropriate.
70 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Color to scan color photographs and other color items. Color scans have the largest file size. ■ Resolution —Drag the slider to the right or left to adjust the dots per inch (dpi) of the resolution.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 71 ■ Size —Click Standar d , click the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list, or click Custom and enter the horiz ontal and vertical page dimensions in the bo xes. The maximum size is 8.5" by 11.
72 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 8. Click the Advanced tab. The options of the Advanced tab are for the Color or Grayscale scanning mode. Saturation is the strength or purity of a color , hue is the color y our eyes see as reflected from the image, and gamma contr ols the brightness of the midtones of the color.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 73 T HE D EVICE S ETTINGS T AB A Device Settings tab appears on the Scan Confi gurations dialog bo x when your selected Destination Application sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or other device.
74 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Collate copies —If you ’ re printing more than one page, collate the copies. Enter the number of copies in the Copies box. Advanced —click to see additional settings for the device. The dialog that appears is specifi c to the device.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 75 C ONFIGURING B EFORE S CANNING Sometimes, you may want to manually confi gure the scan settings before beginning the scanning pr ocess.
76 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. Right-click on Confi gur e Before Scan and choose an inter face to use for configuring before scanning. T wain —The Basic Interface or Advanced Inter face appears for you to configure the scanning.

N ow the application you selected opens and y ou can continue the scanning from that application ’ s TW AIN interface. S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you have a CD burner attached to y our computer , you can scan directly from your scanner onto a CD.
78 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 7. On the OneT ouch window , make sure that the Burn to CD Destination Application is still selected and click the Pr operties button. The OneT ouch 4.0 Link Properties window appears. 8. Click the Burn to CD button.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 79 T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE With the T ransfer to Storage scanning process, you can scan documents and save them in a folder in one step. The process is ideal for archiving documents without having to manually sav e or process them in any other way .
80 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. Right-click on the text format icon and choose the fi le format for the scanned documents. 4. Choose a Scan Confi guration. 5. Click Apply or OK . 6. N ow start scanning using Button the button y ou set up for archiving.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 81 If the Hardware View of the panel is already open y ou can also right-click on the Visioneer 9420 icon. The Hardware P roperties dialog bo x appears and shows information about your Visioneer 9420 scanner .
82 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Click the Pr operties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power saving feature that is set to power down after a period of idle time. Y ou can set the power save mode from 10 minutes to a maximum of 10 hours.

A DJUSTING THE R ESOLUTION Resolution determines the amount of detail y ou can see in the scanned image.

T o use one of the pr eset resolutions for typical scanned items, click one of the options in the list. F or example, to set the r esolution for scanning a business car d, select Business Card.

Drag the Brightness slider to the left to make the item dar ker or to the right to make the item lighter . 2. Drag the Contrast slider to the left to decr ease the contrast or to the right to increase the contrast.

Drag the Gamma , S aturation , and Color Hue sliders to the left to decrease the settings or to the right to incr ease the settings. Y ou can also type a number dir ectly into the setting bo xes, or click the up and down arrows next to the boxes.
