S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 5 Installing Installation is a quick, three-step process: ■ Install the software ■ Connect the scanner ■ Check out your scanner S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the software: 1. S tart Microsoft Windows and make sure no other applications are running.
6 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. On the installation menu, select Install ScanSoft P aperP ort and Scanner Driv er . If a message asks you to restar t your computer , click Restart . 4. On the P aperP or t 8.0 SE Setup window , click N ext .
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 7 13. When you see this Connect Scanner windo w , do NO T click F inish. Leave the window open and proceed to the next section, “Step 2: Connect the Scanner”. S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER Y our OneT ouch 7300 scanner connects to any av ailable USB 1.
8 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly . Do not force the plug into the connection. 2. Plug the computer end of the USB cable into a USB por t on your computer .
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 9 3. When the software is finished loading, r eturn to the Connect Scanner window and click Finish . The scanner’ s status light is green when the scanner and computer are communicating properly . 4. On the Install Completed window , click F inish .
10 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER After installing the scanner and softwar e, you will see a scanner icon on the Windo ws taskbar (at the bottom right corner of the computer screen). If the scanner is properly connected, the scanner icon looks like the one pictured below .
S TEP 3: C HECK O UT Y OUR S CANNER 11 I F THE S CANNER I S N OT P ROPERLY C ONNECTED If the scanner icon on the Windows taskbar has a red “X” through it, the scanner is not properly connected. Check for one of these possible pr oblems: • Is a cable loose or not plugged in securely? Inspect all cable connections.
12 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Choose Connect from the shor tcut menu. The software finds the scanner and makes the connection. The scanner icon will no longer hav e a red X through it, and you ’ re ready to begin scanning.

S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN 17 S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN Scanning from the button panel on the scr een works just like pressing a scanner button. The scanner scans the item, and then sends the image to the destination associated with the button.
18 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE Instead of using a scanner button, you can scan directly from the P aperP or t software. Y ou can also scan directly with other softwar e that meets the TW AIN standards for scanning, which includes many graphics and imaging applications.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 19 2. On the Windo ws taskbar , click Start , point to Programs , point to ScanSoft P aperP ort 8.0, and then click P aperP or t . The P aperP or t desktop opens. 3. Click the Scan icon on the PaperP ort command bar .

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 21 Y our Visioneer OneT ouch 7300 scanner has built-in analytical capabilities that find the optimum combination of settings for the item you ’ r e scanning. When you click AutoScan, the scanner analyzes the image and adjusts the settings to pr oduce the optimal image.

F or example, select Color Confi gurations and then select Custom to scan a color item with the pr eset Custom scan settings.

Use this window to select scanning options and star t the scanner . 8. Select the button most appropriate for the item y ou ’ re scanning.

C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 27 T o open the Configuration dialog bo x from the button panel: 1. Click the scanner icon on the right side of the Windows taskbar . 2. On the button panel, right-click the button y ou want to confi gure. The Configuration dialog bo x opens.

Select the application that y ou want to automatically open to display or pr ocess the scanned image.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 29 Select F ormat and P age(s) —A set of options for selecting whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The format is preset for P aperP ort. Options —Opens a dialog box for selecting options about the destination application for the scanned image.
30 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. F rom the Select Confi guration list, select a scanning confi guration for the button. The configurations are preset for the application y ou select in the Select Application list.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 31 4. Do one of the following: ■ Click the Ne w button. ■ Select a preset configuration and click the Copy button. 5. On the New Scan Configuration dialog box, type a name for the new configuration. ■ If you are copying from a preset configuration, leav e the name as is or change it as required.
32 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 7. Click the P age Settings tab to set the scan page settings. P age Size —Click a page size from the dr op-down list. The outlines on the picture represent the page sizes. Clicking one of the outlines also selects it as the page siz e for the scan.
C ONFIGURING THE B UTTONS 33 Gamma —Drag the slider to improve how the colors in a scanned image look on your monitor . Gamma correction allows you to achieve precise color matching. Because the computer cannot always transmit the exact color information to the har dware, you may have to make some adjustments using the G amma feature.
34 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a confi guration you created yourself, you can adjust scan settings and page settings. For example, if the scanned image is too dark, you can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.

Click the P age Settings tab and adjust page settings as r equired. 5. When finished, click OK . 6. On the Configuration dialog bo x, click OK to save and apply the changes to the button.

By selecting the Show All Destinations option as the preference for the email button, all the other types of applications are included in the list of email destination applications.

T o use one of the preset resolutions for typical scanned items, click one of the options in the list. F or example, to set the r esolution for scanning a business car d, select Business Card.

44 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE F or example, if y ou select Red from the menu and drag the Brightness and Contrast sliders, you can see how the red component of the histogram changes. Note, however , that the G reen and Blue components also change relative to those ne w brightness and contrast settings.
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS IN THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 45 The horizontal axis of the response cur ve represents the original settings of the image, and the ver tical axis represents new settings. Thus, the curve is a straight line fr om the lower left to upper right for an original, unchanged image.
46 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 7300 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE changes its colors in response to the ne w cur ve. The x and y numbers at the bottom of the r esponse cur ve indicate the exact position of the pointer on the cur ve. The Gamma slider remains fixed when you use the F reestyle option.

A Scan Info box opens for each one. The following figure shows an example of a manually selected ar ea.

T ROUBLESHOOTING 57 P roblem: I got the error message: PaperP or t cannot allocate enough memor y to perform internal critical operations. What do I do? Close any other active applications so that additional memor y is available.
