V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 10 Assemble the Scanner A SSEMBLING THE P OWER S UPPLY 1. Select the A C plug adapter that matches the wall po wer outlet. 2. Align the tabs on the bottom of the plug ad apter with the slots in the power supply base.

V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 15 I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE AND C ONNECT THE S CANNER T o install t he software : 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications ar e running. 2. Insert the Installation Disc 1 into your computer’ s CD-R OM drive.
I NSTALLATION 16 1. On the Ma in Menu, select Install Produc ts . 2. Make sur e the boxes for Scanner D river , Visioneer OneT ouch , and Nu a n c e Pap e r Po r t ® are checked. 3. Click Install N ow . I NSTALLING THE S CANNER D RIVER The scanner driver insta llation will start first.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 17 3. On the Vi sioneer License Agreement window , read the licens e agreement. If y ou accept the terms, select I Agr ee , and click Ne x t . If you choose not to accept the license agr eemen t, the installation will terminate and the scanner driver will not be installed.
I NSTALLATION 18 6. A window opens with image quality samples asking you to select an image for your Color Space setting. Select the option that looks best to you and click Nex t . This sets a default gamma value for scans and can be changed later on.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 19 C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER The Visioneer S trobe 400 scanner connects to any avai lable USB port. Check your computer ’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remo ve any protective t ape from the USB cable.
I NSTALLATION 20 3. T urn on the scanner power . The status ligh t comes on and flashes indicating that the scanner is receiving power . If you are using Windows version XP or later , and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.

Registration also gives you fr ee access to software updates for your scanner . Y ou will need an active in ternet connection to registe r your scanne r .

I NSTALLATION 26 3. If you selected OmniP a ge P ro to install you will see a window telling you to inser t Dis c 2 . 4. Click Exit Disc 1 and then eject Dis c 1 fr om the CD-R OM drive. 5. Insert Disc 2 into the CD-R OM drive. The OmniP age Pro I nstallation menu opens automa tically .

I NSTALLATION 28 3. Click the name of the U ser G uide you want t o view and it will open in Adobe Reader . Use t he Adobe Save command to save that U ser Guide to your computer . 4. When you ’ re finished, click Mai n Men u to return to the main Vi si oneer Installation window and click Exit .

After turning off AutoLaunch, as described below , you can also scan using the OneT ouch Button P anel on screen, or using a scanning application.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 42 S ELECTING N EW S ETTINGS The settings on the OneT ouch Pr operties window are: Sele ct De sti nati on — The list of Destination A pplications that OneT ouch can send a scanned image to so that this application opens immedi ately after scanning is complete.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 43 Select Configuration —The list of available scan configurations for the selected button. The configuration ’ s basic settings include: scanning mode, resolution (dpi), page size, brightness (B r), and contrast (Cr).
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 44 OK/Cancel/A p ply buttons — OK accepts any ch anges and closes the windo w . App ly accepts any changes but leaves the window open so you can continue making additi onal changes. Can cel closes the windo w without accepting any changes.

Sta n da rd —Click the menu arro w and choos e a page size fr om the list. Cu st om —Enter the horizontal and vertical page dimensions in the boxes.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 47 • Inv er t Im ag e —Only available for B lack&White M ode, this opt ion reverses the black and whites of an image. • Dupl ex —Scan both sides of the page. If this option is not selected, the scanner will scan the face-up side of the page only .
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 48 The Advanced Settings tab 1. Click the Adv anc ed Sett in gs tab. The options of the Advanced S ettings tab ar e for the Color or G rayscale scanning mode. 2. Drag the sliders to the left and right to change the color settings .

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 50 The Storage Options T ab (Archive) A S torage Options tab is on the Scan Configurations dialog box when the Destination Application is T ransfer to Storage. Y ou use the options on this tab to select where to save your s canned items for storage when scanning with that part icular Scan Configuration.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 52 2. Select the scan configuration Configur e Before Scan . 3. Right-click on Configur e Before Scan and choose an interface to use for configuring befor e scanning. TW AIN —The TW AIN Interface opens f or you to make changes prior to scanning.

When finished, click the Done button and the image will be sent to the Destination Application specified in the OneT ouch 4.0 P roperties window . In the example sho wn on the previous page , the Destination Application is P aint.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 54 The available options ar e for images and text. The T ext F ormats are for text file types. The names of the formats indicate their file types. S ee "T ext F ormats" on page 74 for details. Create Single Image Files The TIFF and PDF formats support multiple page docume nts.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 55 T o select a JP EG or PDF file size: 1. Select JPG or PDF as the page format. 2. Right-click on the JPG or PDF icon. A menu opens. 3. Choose the file size/image quality option for y our scanned images.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 56 T o select a file type for the text for mat: 1. Select the D estination Application. 2. Right-click on the text format icon. The menu options depend on the type of Destination Application you select. 3. Choose the file type that you want for the text format.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 58 Global Options • Show Progres s Wi ndow —Select this option to display the progr ess window of the document(s) during scanning. • U se enhanced folder browser —Select this option if you want to save y our scans to a network location that is not a mapped drive on your computer .

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 60 T ext Documents Properties These properties apply to Micr osoft W ord, Micr osoft Excel ® , and the other applications indicated by t heir icons in the list. The properties apply to the Op tical Character Recognitio n (OCR) settings for the applications.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 62 Image Documents Properties These properties apply to Microsoft P aint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in th e Color document ha ndling settings box es for the options you want. These options will apply to all the applications in the group .

If a CD burner is attached to your computer , and your computer is running Windows XP or W indows V ista, you also use this dialog box to start the Burn to CD pr ocess.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 64 eMail Properties These properties apply to email applications so you can specify the folder for documents that you will attach to an email message. Micr osoft Outlook ® will accept dir ect attachment of documents to a blank email message as soon as scanning is finished, but othe r email applications may not.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 65 S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you have a CD burner attached to your computer , you can scan directly from your scanner onto a CD. This feature is available only on computers running Windows vers ion XP or later .
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 66 S CANNING WITH E VENT F OR WARDING (STI) If you want to specify an application to use for scan ning at the start of the process, y ou can use event forw arding. T o scan with ev ent for warding: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties window .
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 67 C REATING AN HTML W EB P AGE FROM Y OUR S CANNED D OCUMENTS Y ou ca n convert scanned pages to HTML format for posting directly to your web site. T o scan and cr eate an HTML web page: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties window .
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 68 T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE With T ransfer to St orage scanning, you can scan documents and save them in a folde r in one step. The process is ideal for archiving documents without having to ma nu al ly s av e o r p r ocess them.

When selecting the storage location for scanned documents, you can select a local folder , or a folder on a ser ver or mapped driv e.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 70 4. Click the Ne w button. The Scan Configuration P roperties dialog box opens. 5. T o help you remember which folder it is , give th e new configuration a name that indicates the folder name, such as “Business R eceipts.

The selected folder will no w be set as the S torage Location, such as “B usiness Receipts.” 11. Click OK . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to Storage configuration.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 72 13. Y ou will now have multiple configurations set up for the T ransfer to Storage destinat ion, and each configuration scans documents to separate folders. 14. N ow click the arro w buttons to select a sc anner button for each new configuration.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 73 S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text an d numbers on a scanned page into editable text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and number s to edit, spell check, change font or type size, sort, c alcula te, and s o forth.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 74 T EXT F ORMATS Y ou select the text format option by clicking on the text icon on the On eT ouch P roperties window . Selecting the text format option also selects OCR proce ssing as an automatic step for scanning.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 76 Additional options ar e available on the menu for th e sPDF and nPDF text formats. The three image quality settings are: Mini mize Size —Smallest file size, lowest image quality . No r m a l —Medium file size, some loss of image quality .

Languages in Document —Click on the language(s) in list th at corr espond to the languages in the documents to be scanned. Y ou can click on multiple languages. These ar e the languages that will be recognized during the OCR process.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 79 symbol “Ç” but the OCR process cannot r epresent that character , then every place “Ç” appears, the OCR process substitutes the missing character symbol. Th e car et (^) is the default symbol for the missing character .
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 80 7. The U ser Dict ionary Files windo w opens and show s the available dictionaries. M yDictionary is an example of a user dictionary . 8. Click Add New . The Add N ew User Di ctionar y window opens. 9. Click the drop-down arro w for F iles of type and choose Te x t F i l e s ( .

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 82 3. T o import a list of words fr om another text file, click Impo rt . The Import Contents of U ser Dictionary window opens. 4. Select the file that has the words y ou want to add to your user dictionary . Importing will add the entire list of wo rds in a file to the user dictionary .

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 84 • S preadsheet —Choose this option if the entire document consists of a table that you want to export to a spreadsheet pr ogram, or have treated as a table. N o flowing text or graphics will be detected. Output F ormat Options • Automat ic —The document will be formatted as close to its original as possible.

S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 86 T HE K OFAX VRS S ETTINGS Y ou select the Kofax VRS settings when creating or ed iting a scan con figurat ion on the OneT ouch 4.0 P roperties window . T o select the Kofax VRS settings: 1. Open the OneT ouch 4.0 Pr operties window .
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 87 3. Click the VRS Settings t ab to see the new VRS settings. 4. Choose the K ofax VRS options for the scan configuration. 5. Click the drop-down arr ow to choose the type of VR S settings to use for the new scan configuration.
S CANNING F ROM O NE T OUCH 88 • Desp eckl e —S peckles are small spots on an image that the scanner interpr eted as a valid part of the document. F or example, an irregularity in the paper , or a small wrinkle, or the holes where a staple was remo ved may sho w up as speckles on the scanned image.
V ISIONEER S TROBE 400 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 89 When a scan configuration includes VRS options, the OneT ouch P anel and the OneT ouch P roperties window both sho w the VRS icon as a reminder . The VRS icon on the top of the OneTouch Panel and on the scan configuration remind yo u that the scan will use the VRS settings.
