Introduction Introduction Y our BCD996T scan ner is a state-of-the-art scan ner radio with T runk T racker IV™ and automatic scanning capabilities. Y ou can store in the dynamic memory conventional frequencies such as police, fire/emergency , marine, air , amateur , and other communications.
Note: The scanner ’s freq uency coverage is not continuous and do es not include the cellular telephone or UHF TV bands. Feature Highlight s General Close Call™ RF Capture T echnology — Instantly dete cts and tunes to nearby transmissions with no additio nal programming.
Introduction Channel Lockout — Y ou can lock out any system, group, frequency , or channel while scanning. If you lock out a system or group, any channels belongin g to that system or group are also locked out. Frequency Lockout — Y ou can lock out up to 500 frequencies (250 permanently locked out + 250 temporarily locked o ut).
Automatic Chan nel Step — Accepts frequ encies on any valid channel step, even if it does not fall within the band plan’ s default step. Frequenc y Step — Lets you select a frequency step (5, 6.25, 7.5, 8.33, 10, 12.5,15, 20, 25, 50 or 100 kHz) for man ual mode and search mode.
Introduction Control Channel Only Scanning — I f the scanner is set to scan a Motorola system, you can set it so it scans using on ly contr ol channel data. Y ou do not have to program voice chann el frequencies into memory in this mode as long as all possible control channels ar e programmed.
Quick Search — Lets you se arch from the currently-tuned frequency if you are searching a conventional system. Auto S tore Frequenc y AutoStore — Automatic ally stores all active frequencies into the selected conventional system. T alk Group ID AutoStore — Automa tically stores all new talk group ID’ s into a channel grou p you select .

2. Program the system based on the plan. Enclosed with the materials provided with your scan ner is a reprinted article from Popular Communications , which, in clear , easy-to-underst and language, tells you how to start the programm ing session. Th e article also includes a glossary of terms and other val uable data.

channels, then press the GQK within 2 seconds. Systems can have up to 20 channel group s, and multiple channel group s can be assigned to the same GQK. What is Scanning? Unlike standard AM or FM radio stations, most two-way communications do not transmit continuously .
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T even interfere with each other to the point where it is impossible to clearly receive any of the sta tions. A scanner , such as your BCD996T , equipped with CTCSS and DCS, can code each received frequency with a specific sub-aud ible CTCSS or DCS frequency or code.
Repeater Operation Repeater systems use two frequencies: one transmit s from the radio to a central repeater; the other transmits from the repeat er to other radios in the system. With a repeater-based system, the repeater is located on top of a tall building or on a radio tower that provides great visibility to the area of oper ation.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T T runked Scanning While conventional scanning wor ked great while there were only a few groups wanting to use th e frequencies, with the adv ent of smaller , lower-cost radios more and more agencies and busi nesses wanted to take ad vantage of the utility of 2-way radio.
channels (typically 10, 20, or 28 tot al channels). When a user presses Push T o T alk (PTT) to transmit, their radio first sen ds the person’s ta lk group information to the control channe l. The computer then assi gns that t alk group to a specific voice channel and transmits th at data over the control channel.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T radios in that talk group will switch to the correct channel. T o program an EDACS system in your scanner , you will need to know both the frequencies used by the system and the LCN for each freque ncy .
data matche s a talk group ID that you have stored in the talk group ID list and have not locked out. L TR systems are frequently pr ogrammed so that each radio has a unique use r ID.
Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T I-Call (Motorola/EDACS) I-calls are direct unit-to-unit transmi ssions th at are not heard by other system users. Y our BCD996T can receive I-ca ll transmissions. Se e “Setting I-Call (Motorola an d EDACS System s Only)” on Page 72 for more information about monitoring I-call tr ansmissions.
