2 T erminology What is Scanning? Unlike standard AM or FM r adio stations, most two-w ay comm unications do not transmit continuously . The BC780XL T scans the channels you program until it finds an activ e frequency . Scanning stops on an active frequency and remains on that channel as long as the transmission continues .

7 Setup Connecting an Antenna Y ou must install an antenna bef ore you can operate the scanner . Y ou hav e been provided a standard telescopic antenna that works well with this scanner , but you ma y want to purchases another type to increase the range.
8 T ypical Mounting Methods The BC780XL T can be conv eniently mounted on a table , bulkhead, o verhead, or an y other desired location (ref er to figure below f or typical mounting methods). Caution : Make sure there are no hidden electrical wires or other items behind the desired location bef ore proceeding.
9 Applying P ower f or V ehicle Installation Y ou can power y our scanner using either the supplied DC power cord or y our vehicle’ s cigarette lighter sock et using DC cigarette lighter power cord. Caution : Y ou must use a power source that supplies 13.
10 Desktop Installation Y ou can place this scanner on a desk, shelf, or table to use it as a base station. 1. Flip up the feet f or desk installation.
11 Connecting an Earphone F or private listening, you can connect an earphone with a 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) plug to the EXT . SP . jack on the back of the scanner . Be very careful as damage to your hearing can result if the V OLUME control is not set to the lowest le vel first .
12 Note : F old out the F ront Cov er to see the Controls and Indicators while reading this Guide. T urn the Scanner On T urn the V OLUME control clockwise out of the detent position. The scanner automatically star ts scanning. Since there are no frequencies programmed in your scanner initially , you ma y not receive an y signals.
13 Understanding the Men u System It is very impor tant for y ou to understand the Menu screen. T o navigate through the Menu screen is really quite simple. Many of the f eatures of this scanner , can only be accessed by the menu screens. There are se veral w a ys to get through the screens.
14 Menu Description and Numeric K eypad Equiv alents Below are the menu screens and a brief description or pur pose of the feature . 1:SYSTEM DATA 1:DIMMER Allows y ou to change the brightness of the display .
15 3. T one Search - In this mode, as soon as the scanner stops on any (non-trunk ed) channel, the scanner will begin to search f or any subaudible tone that is being used on a transmitted frequency . The scanner will check each CTCSS tone sequentially and it will find DCS tones instantly .
16 6:STEPS Y our BC780XL T is programmed with def ault step sizes f or each frequency range (see inside front cov er). Steps are impor tant if you are interested in using the VFO to tune off-frequency from a frequency programmed into memory or if you wish to program a frequency that the def ault step size will not accept.
17 4:L/O ID REVIEW Use this menu item to re view the IDs that y ou hav e lock ed out during Search and Scan. Use the Up/Down arrow k eys or turn the VFO to the left or right to view the IDs that hav e been lock ed out. T o leav e the lock out IDs unchanged, press MENU to back out of the men u.
18 8:STATUS BIT (MO TOR OLA) On T ype II tr unking systems there is a method by which specializ ed types of communications utilize unique talkg roup numbers. An emergency call will occur on a unique talkgroup from its primar y assignment, for e xample.
19 2:DELAY Set a dela y for the search r anges. This applies to all ranges (See CHANNEL D A T A- STEPS f or details). 3:ATTENUATOR Set attenuation f or all search ranges. (See CHANNEL DA T A-A TTENU A T OR f or details). 4:TONE DATA The def ault mode is off.
20 Bef ore the BC780XL T can begin conv entional scanning, you must prog ram a frequency into at least one channel. Repeat this procedure for each channel y ou want to progr am. Storing Frequencies into Channels 1. Select frequencies from your dealer , from various sources on the internet, or from one of the guides listed on page 5.
21 Duplicate Frequency Alert If you enter a frequency which has been stored in another channel, you will hear a beep and the other channel displa ys WARNING . Press to clear and star t again. ––– OR ––– Press E again to store the frequency in both channels.
22 Beep Alert The scanner can aler t you with three rapid beeps at the beginning of a tr ansmission on an assigned frequency . Assigning the beep alert to a channel This aler t can be set on/off to ev ery channel (or to ev er y ID memor y for T runking mode).
23 1. After programming frequencies, simply press SCAN to begin scanning. 2. The bank indicators selected for scanning appear in the displa y , and the bank being currently monitored flashes. Y ou can deselect banks from active scanning by pressing their number on y our ke ypad.
24 Still another method of direct access to a specific channel: 1 Press MAN . 2 Press s or t to select the channel. (or press and hold s or t to scroll more quickly .) Lastly to step up through the channels one at a time, repeatedly press MAN. RF Attenuation Feature The BC 780XL T comes with an RF Attenuation f eature.
25 5. Press s or t to select one of the delay periods provided and then press E . DLY appears on the displa y unless no delay has been set. 6. For Search mode , select SEARCH EVENT - DELA Y , then set the delay period. Note : The dela y periods are as follows: • None: Dela y feature off • 1 sec.
26 3 . The scanner immediately resumes scanning because the lock ed out channel is no longer in the scanning sequence. Lock out Tips • Write down your loc ked-out channels and put in a con venient place in case you need to restore them. Restoring a Locked-out Channel 1.
27 Changing the Priority Channel Y ou cannot eliminate the Prior ity Channel, but y ou can change it to any one of the 50 av ailable channels in each bank. 1. Press MAN . 2. T o select a new Priority Channel: a. Enter the channel number . b . Then press MAN again.
28 Setting a Searc h Range Note: First you m ust set the search ranges through the menu screen prior to any searching. The BC780XL T can search up to 10 separate frequency ranges to help y ou discov er new stations in your area. T o set a search range , enter into the menu mode.
29 Searc h Hold Feature 1. Press HOLD/ s at anytime to stop the search. 2. Press HOLD/ s to mov e to the ne xt higher frequency . ––– OR ––– Press LIMIT/ t to mov e down to the pre vious frequency . 3. Press SRCH to resume searching. Data Skip A scanner will normally stop on any transmission it receives .
30 Storing Searc h Frequencies Y ou can quickly store any frequency y ou find during Search. Caution : Y ou must select the channel in which you will store the frequency bef ore enter ing the search mode. Otherwise, y ou may er ase a stored frequency that you w ant to keep .
31 Squelch (SQ) Mode The scanner can be set to the f ollowing SQ modes. • Carrier SQ mode (default setting) The scanner will stop on any transmission or squelch opening, regardless of whether an y sub-audible tone has been prog rammed f or the channel or search range.
32 Note : • CTCSS: Continuous T one Coded Squelch System. • DCS: Digital Coded Squelch. • F or example , the scanner shows the f ollowing displa ys. • If the dela y feature (-2 sec/-5 sec/-10 sec) has been set while in T one search mode, it resumes scanning according to the dela y setting.
33 The Ser vice Search feature allo ws you to toggle through the f ollowing ten preprogr ammed ser vices. The frequencies selected for these services are the most commonly used around the U .
34 W eather Channel Searc h T o hear preprogr ammed NOAA weather channels: 1. Press WX . Note : • It’ s possible to receive more than one w eather broadcast in your area. If the broadcast sounds weak or distant, press SRCH to look f or a closer station.
35 Programming FIPS Code The 6-digit F ederal Inf or mation Processing System (FIPS) codes established b y the National W eather Ser vice (NWS) must be programmed in y our scanner . These codes specify an emergency and the specific geographic area (such as county) aff ected by the emergency .
36 T runked Systems Y our BC780XL T is designed to track three major types of trunked r adio systems. These systems are described here. v MO T OROLA - Including T ype I, T ype II, Hybrid, SMARTNET , and Pr ivacy Plus . Motorola systems are widely used by pub lic saf ety and business users.
37 Pr ogramming and Receiving T runked Systems Programming T runking Frequencies The first step in trac king a trunked system is storing the frequencies in one of the 10 av ailable banks in y our scanner . Remember that y ou can only store one trunking system in each bank.
38 + Important! 7. Press TRUNK f or 2 seconds. A tone sounds, and E , M , or L icon appears on the displa y according to the system selected. Note : • T o clear a mistak e while entering the frequency , press (decimal ke y) repeatedly until the displa y is cleared.
39 Setting the Squelch F or trunked reception, a good setting for the SQUELCH control is in the center of the range with the red marker pointing up . See the illustration. If set too high (CCW) in some cases it could pre vent y our scanner from locking to the control channel reliab ly .
40 T alkgroups displa y differently in Motorola, ED ACS and L TR systems. Y ou should read the appropriate par ts of this guide to understand the formats. The bottom line of the displa y indicates the Bank and the type of trunked system you are monitoring.
41 Restoring Locked-out IDs T o unlock a single ID , follo w these steps: 1. Press MENU . 2. Select TRUNK D A T A - BANK NO . - L/O ID REVIEW using s , t or VFO and pressing E , SELECT or VFO . 3. Select the locked out ID y ou want to unloc k using s or t .
42 Scan Lists Each bank of your BC780XL T can be a tr unk tracking bank and it can be a con v entional scanning bank. When you designate a bank as a trunking bank, your scanner sets up 10 Scan Lists, which are simply lists used to store y our fa v orite IDs.
T o enter an ED ACS ® ID: a. Enter ID you w ant to store. Use the f or the “dash”. b . Press E . Hint : Remember that Uniden's AFS f or mat allows y ou to enter full or par tial EDA CS IDs for powerful fle xibility in all modes. Be sure to read the section "EDA CS Reception" on page 49 to learn how this works.
ID Scan Mode 1. Press SCAN to begin scanning the lists you hav e programmed. If you ha ven't prog rammed any IDs , ERROR appears f or a fe w seconds. 2. T o remov e a Scan List from active scanning, press the number of the Scan List on y our ke ypad.
45 Setting Priority in T runking Mode Y ou can set prior ity in your trunking lists, just as y ou do in your con ventional ones . Y ou can set the prior ity by pressing and holding PRI f or 2 seconds. After you’ve set up y our Scan List, press PRI to activate it.
46 I-Call (Motorola/ED A CS) I-Calls are direct unit-to-unit transmissions that are not heard b y other system users. Y our BC780XL T can receive these tr ansmissions.
47 I-CALLS IN SCAN AND MANU AL MODE Y ou can store I-Call IDs in scanlists, just like talkg roup IDs, f or use by ID Scan and Man ual modes. T o program a specific I-Call Unit ID into a scanlist: ED A CS or Motorola T ype 1 Enter f ollowed b y the Unit ID digits, then E .
48 TR UNK SEARCH : This mode works similarly to TR UNK SCAN. If the scanner finds any (non-lock ed-out) ID when it checks the control channel, y ou will hear it. Y ou will then hear any replies that f ollow within tw o seconds (or whatev er dela y you ma y hav e set).
49 E DAC S ® Reception E DAC S ® T racking T runkT rac ker III no w allows trac king of ED ACS ® trunked systems. Until now these widely used systems hav e been almost impossible to monitor with a con v entional scanner .
50 An ED ACS ® T runked system This char t shows how talkg roups are organized within an ED A CS system at the AGENCY le vel. The individual talkgroups cannot be shown at this scale because there are ov er 2000. Howe ver the char t can show the 16 Agencies in this e xample.
51 Special ED ACS ® Features AFS P artial Entr y Feature AFS is Uniden's method of encoding ED A CS talkgroups . AFS stands for 'Agency-Fleet-Subfleet'. AFS talkgroups are used in all ED A CS reception -- in ID SEARCH, ID LOCK OUT and ID SCAN scanlists.
52 LT R ® Reception LT R ® T racking LT R ® (Logic T runked Radio) systems are trunking systems used primar ily by b usiness or private communications service providers, such as taxicabs , delivery trucks, and repair ser vices. These systems encode all trunking information as digital subaudible data that accompanies each transmission.
53 Motor ola Reception Motorola T racking There are really two types of Motorola trunking systems. These are usually referred to as T ype I and T ype II systems. T ype I only occurs on some 800 MHz systems. All VHF , UHF and 900 MHz trunking systems use T ype II.
54 Fleet Map Programming If you ha ve prog rammed a trunk tracking bank f or Motorola type and press TRUNK to star t Multi-T rac k, you will see user IDs displa y on your screen. Since the BC780XL T defaults to T ype II systems, all the IDs will appear as n umbers.
55 3. Select the size code f or the first bloc k using s , t , or VFO . 4. Press E , SELECT , or VFO . The ne xt av ailable b lock displa ys. 5. Repeat step 3 and 4 until you hav e selected a size code f or each bloc k. F or details about each size code, see Fleet Map Siz e Codes in the Appendix.
56 7. Enter a new offset channel with the ke ypad. Note : Y ou can only input within a range of 380-759. 8. Press E . The displa y changes for entering the ne xt base frequency .
57 Control Channel Onl y Mode When this function is activated, trunking is perf ormed using control channel data only . V oice channel (also known as "working channel") frequencies do not ha ve to be progr ammed into memor y .
58 Disconnect T one Detect Option (End Code) When this function is disabled, the r adio looks for squelch bef ore retur ning to the control channel instead of waiting f or the disconnect tone. Only in rare instances will you need to adjust the def ault settings.
59 Remote Interface Y ou can communicate and program y our BC780XL T in numerous wa ys with per ipheral de vices using the Remote Interface Cab le por t.
60 T o connect Scanner to External Modem: Plug the scanner end of the RS232C straight interf ace cable into the remote port on the rear of your scanner . Plug the other end of the cable (DB-9 serial connector) into the external modem. Y ou ma y need a DB-9 to DB-25 (or DB-9) null modem adapter , av ailable at most computer stores.
61 6. After clear ing, the DIAL START message appears. Press 1 to star t dialing. 7. If the connection is successful, the scanner star ts frequency downloading. COMPLETE will be displa yed when your do wnloading is completed. 8. T o star t the scanner , tur n the unit off then on.
62 Menu f or SmartScan In the menu mode (SYSTEM D A T A - SMAR T SCAN), you can change se ver al parameters used f or Smar tScan. • Bank lock • T ransf er speed • Flow control setting • Dial type Bank Lock Smar tScanner will ov erwrite frequencies that you hav e already programmed into y our scanner .
63 Flow Contr ol Y ou can choose the follo wing flow control settings. Xon/Xoff is the def ault. The initial displa y appears. Press HOLD/ s f or RTS/CTS . Press HOLD/ s again f or non flow control. Press HOLD/ s again to turn off the flow control. Press E when desired setting is displa yed.
64 The Smar tScanner database downloads frequency and trunking talkgroups (if applicable f or your area) to the scanner using the f ollowing order : 1. All licenses within your zip code. 2. All licenses within your community (with more than one zip code) 3.
65 Remote (PC Control) Mode T o connect Scanner to PC: Plug the scanner end of the RS232C straight interf ace cable into the remote port on the rear of your scanner . Plug the other end of the cable (DB-9 serial connector) into a personal computers serial por t.
66 Change T ransfer Speed T o change transf er speed, enter into the menu mode. 1. Press MENU . 2. Press s or t to select SYSTEM D A T A and then press E . 3. Press s or t to select PC CONTROL and then press E . 4. T o change the transf er speed, press s or t .
67 5. On the scanner that is the “Sla ve Unit”, select SLAVE , then press E . 6. Press the SCAN key on both scanners . The data transfer is started from the Master Unit to the Slav e Unit. During the data transfer , both scanners show the f ollowing displa ys.
68 The f ollowing additional f eatures are designed for y ou to customize y our scanner . Once these f eatures hav e been tur ned on or off , they will remain as the y are set until you reset them, e ven if y ou tur n the scanner off and then on again.
69 Rever se Mode This ke y will allow the user to observe the re verse frequency of the repeater . While pressing /R VRS , the standard pair frequency will be displa yed. For a list of the standard pair frequencies, ref er to the table “Rev erse List” in the Appendix.
70 Care and Maintenance General Use • T urn the scanner off before disconnecting the po wer . • Alwa ys write down the programmed frequencies in the e vent of memory loss. • If memor y is lost, simply reprogram each channel. The display sho ws 000.
71 T roub leshooting Problem Suggestion Scanner won’t work. 1. Check the connections at both ends of the A C Adapter . 2. T ur n on the wall switch of y our room. Y ou could be using an outlet controlled by the w all switch. 3. Mov e the A C Adapter to another wall outlet.
72 Problem Suggestion Scanner won’t trac k. 1. Ma y not be a system which can be trac ked b y your scanner . Make sure you press and hold TRUNK f or 2 seconds to enter into trunk mode. 2. Missing the data frequency . 3. Change to a T ype 1 Scanner setup.

74 Glossary of T erms Glossary of terms . Alpha tag - This ter m ref ers to an alphanumeric text tag that y ou can enter to describe the individual frequencies that you ha ve prog rammed. Rather than having to associate a specific frequency to the individuals that are using it, you can enter the actual name of the group .
75 Enter Lock - This is the ter m used for locking the k eypad. This pre vents accidental re-programming of channels and talkg roups entered into memor y .
76 Screen mask - Screen Mask reduces the amount of information that appears on the displa y . Alpha tags that y ou hav e set f or a channel along with a fe w function icons will appear only on the displa y . This mode is par ticular ly useful in public saf ety vehicles where that are already ov erloaded with information.

When you progr am your scanner to trac k a T ype I system, you m ust select a size code f or each of these bloc ks.
