Getting Started This manual explains the use of comm ands for remotely controlling your oscilloscope. W ith this information, you can write computer programs to perform func tions, such as setting the front-panel controls, taking m easurements, performing statistical calculations, and exporting data for use in other programs.
Getting Started W ith USB, the system automatically con fi gures itself. T o verify that the USB is enabled: 1. On the front panel, push Utility . 2. Push Utility Page . 3. Select I/O with the Multipurpose knob . 4. Push USB , and verify that USB is enabled.
Getting Started The oscillosco pe has a USB 2.0 High speed device p ort to control the oscilloscope through USBTMC or GPIB with a TEK-USB-488 Adapter . The USBTMC protocol allows USB devices to communicate using IEEE488 style messages. This lets you run your GPIB software applications on USB hardware.
Getting Started Documentation The following d ocuments are available for download on the Manuals Finder We b s i t e a t www .tektr onix.com : MSO4000 and DP O4000 Series Digital Phospho r Oscilloscopes User Manual . Information about installing and operating the oscilloscope.
Command Syntax Y ou can control the operations and f unctions of the oscilloscope through the Ethernet port or the USB 2.0 device port using comman ds and queries. The related topi cs listed below describe the syntax of these commands and queries. The topics also describe the conventio ns that the oscilloscope uses to process them.
Command Syntax T able 2-2: Comm and Message Elements Symbol Meaning <Header> This is the basic command name. If the header ends with a question mark, the command is a query . The header may begin with a colon (:) characte r . If the command is concatenated with other commands, the beginning colon is required.
Command Syntax Queries Queries cause t he oscilloscope to return status or setting information. Queries have the structure: [:]<Header> [:]<Header>[<Spa ce><Argument > [<Comma><Argu ment>]...] Y ou can specify a q uery command at any level within the c ommand tree unless otherwise noted.
Command Syntax Abbreviating Y ou c an abbrevi ate many oscilloscope comman ds. Each command in this documentation shows the minimum accepta ble abbreviations in capitals. For example, you can ent er the command ACQuire:NUM A vg simply as ACQ:NUMA or acq:numa.
Command Syntax If the header is off: FULL;1 5. Set commands and queries may be concatenate d in the same message. For example, ACQuire:MODe SAM ple;NUMAVg?;S TATE? is a valid message that sets the acquis ition mode to sample. The message then queries the number of acquisitions for averaging and the acqui sition state.
Command Syntax Cursor Position Mnemonics When cursors ar e displayed, commands may specify which cursor of the pair to use. T able 2-5: Channel Mnemonics Symbol Meaning CH<x> A channel speci fi er; <x> is 1 through 4. T able 2-6: Cursor Mnemonics Symbol Meaning CURSOR<x> A cursor selector; <x> is either 1 or 2.
Command Syntax Argument T ypes Commands use a rgumen ts such as enumera tion, numeric, quoted string and block. Each of these arguments a re listed in detail below .
Command Syntax A quoted string can include any character de fi ned in the 7-bit ASCII character set. Follow these rules when you use quoted strings: 1. Use the same ty pe of quote character to open and close the string. For example: "this is a v alid string" .

Status and Events The oscilloscope provides a status and eve nt reporting system for the Ethernet, GPIB (with the TEK-USB-488 Adapte r), and U SB interfaces. This s ystem informs you o f certain signi fi cant events that occur within the oscilloscope.

Status and Events Use the *SRE com mand to set the SRER. Use the *SRE? query to read the register . The R QS bit remains set to one until either the Status Byte Register is read with a Serial Poll or the MSS bit changes back to a zero.
Status and Events Event Queue The Eve nt Queue s t o r e sd e t a i l e di n f o r m a t i o no nu pt o3 3e v e n t s . I ft h a n3 2 events stack up in the E vent Queue, the 32nd event is replaced by event code 350, "Queue Over fl ow .
Status and Events Figure 3-6: Status and Event Handling Process When an event occurs, a signal is sent to the DESER (1). If that type of event is enabled in the DESER (that is, if the bit for that event type is set to 1), the appropriate bit in the SESR is set to one, and the event is recorded in the Event Queue (2).
Status and Events Synchronizat ion Methods Overview Although most commands are completed almost immediately after b eing received by the oscilloscope, some commands star t a process that requires time.
Status and Events For example, a t ypical application might involv e acquiring a single-sequence waveform and then taking a measurement on the acquired waveform.
Status and Events T h es a m ec o m m a n d sequence u sing the *W AI command for synchronization looks like this: /* Set up condi tional acquis ition */ ACQUIRE:STATE OF F SELECT:CH1 ON HORIZONTAL:RE.
Status and Events /* Take amplitu de mea surement */ MEASUREMENT:IMME D:VALUE This sequence lets you create your own wait loop rather than usi ng the *W AI command. The B USY? query helps you avoid time-outs caused by writing too many commands to the input buffer .
Status and Events Service Reques t Method: Enable the OPC bit in the Device Event Status Enable Register (DESER) and the Event Status Enable Register (ESER) using the DESE and *ESE commands. Y ou can also enable service requests by setting the ESB bit in the Service Request Enable Register (SRER) using the *SRE command.
