Scope of the manual 3 This manual provides general information on the MRC-921 MicroBase’ s parts, features, and accessories. It also explains how to operate and maintain the cradle. Document conventions Cautions Cautions indicate potential damage to equipment.
Overview of the MRC -921 MicroBase 4 Figure 1 shows a typi cal MRC -921 MicroBas e system. The MRC-921 MicroBase is a communication cradle that allows a w ireless MicroRadio-base d scanner , such as the PTC-921, to communicate with a host.
Getting started 5 Unpacking the MRC -921 Any additional accessories are shipped i n separate bo xes with their own manuals. Each shipping box contains • an MRC-921 MicroBase, • a pow er pac k (if .
Supplying power to the MRC -921 Equi pme nt requ i r ed : • A 12-volt, 800-mA powe r pack T o use the uni t outside of the U. S. or Canada, you need a power pack designed for a 220-volt AC outlet. • An electrical outlet within 6 feet (1.8 met ers) of the MRC-921 providing 1 10 volts AC in the U.
P arts 6 Figu res 2 and 3 on the following pages show and describe the exte rnal parts of the MRC-921 MicroBase. The part listed below is inte rnal and, ther efore, is not s hown i n eith er of th e figu res. MicroRadio See Appendi x A for rad io specif ications.
1. An external antenna can be ord ered to expand the cover age of the cradle’s Micr oRadio. Covera ge incr eases f rom 50 ft (15.2 m) with a standard internal antenna to 100 ft (30.5 m) with an external antenna. 2. T his bay holds a PT C-92 1 spare b attery pack for rechargi ng.
1 . T his R J -41 s e rial port conn e cts th e MRC-921 v i a cab l e to a ho s t’s R S-232 s erial port for communication or configuration. Refer to the MRC - 9 2 1 T ech n i c al Refere n c e for configuration instructions.
Recharging battery packs 7 ! Use the MRC-921 to recharge only PT C-921 battery p acks. Follow the instructions in this section to use the MRC-921 as a battery charger . ! Recharging a cold battery pack can damage it . Allow any batte ry pack used in below-freezing tempe ratur es to wa rm up to ro om temper atur e bef ore recharg ing.
If the PTC bay was o rdered as a trickle charger , the battery pack in the P TC will take 12 to 16 hours t o charge. If the PT C bay is a trickle charger , its green LED will never light.
Connecting the MRC -921 to a host 8 The MRC-921 MicroBase can communicate with a variety of h ost devices, suc h as person al computers and point-of-sale (POS) terminals. Each host can accept data from the MRC-921 through its RS-232 serial port. Follow the instructions in this section to connect your MRC-921 to a host.
Configuring the MR C -921 9 Before the MRC-921 MicroBase can send data from t he wireless scanner (PTC-921) t o t he hos t , the cradle must be p r ope r ly c o n figu r ed for c omm u ni c ation. Specificall y , parameters such as the radio channel, baud rate, co mmunica t i on pro t ocol, an d s o on need t o be selecte d.
Communicating data 10 After t he MRC-921 has been connec t ed to the hos t and properly configured, commun ication usually follows this g eneral pa t tern: 1 . All t hree units (PTC-921, MRC-921, and hos t ) are t u r n e d o n . T he defaul t mess age is usual l y an aster i sk (*).
Maintaining the MRC -921 11 The MRC-921 is well constructed and durable; however , it is a precision ele ctronic device and must be treated as s uch. Follow t he procedures in this section to ensure reliable se rvice. Operating conditions The MRC-921 is des igned to operate in environments that are normally free of dust, dirt, and moisture.
Storing the MRC -921 • Do not store t he MRC-921 in temperatures be low − 20 degrees F ( − 29 degrees C) or above 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) . • Do not store t he MRC-921 in a damp or humid environment (over 95% noncondensing).
T roubleshooti ng 12 LEDs remain on after the power -on self test • Remove the sp are battery pack and PTC, if present, from the M RC-921. Unplug the power pack; then plug it in again. • If the LEDs remain lit, call your T elxo n service repres entat ive .
Both LEDs for the PT C are blinking • Make sure the PT C is installed correctly in its bay . • Exchange the battery pack in the P TC-921 with the spare battery pa ck. Refer to page 9 for information on disposi ng of your nickel-cadmi um battery pack.
T he green LED for the PT C never lights If the PT C bay was ordered as a trickle charger , the green LED will never light. T his is normal. • Call your T elxon se rvice representative . T he green LED for the spare battery pack never lights • Call your T elxon se rvice representative .
