DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 4 78J00-03E DRIVING YOUR VEHICLE Your Driving, the Road, and Your Vehicl e ................... ..... 4-1 Towing .... ...........
4-1 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E Your Driving, the Road, and Your Vehicle Defensive Driving The best advice anyone can give about driving is: Drive defensively.
4-2 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E many might think. Although it depends on each person and situati on, here is some general information on the proble m.
4-3 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E There is something else about drinki ng and driving that many people do not know. Medical research show s that alcohol in a person’s system can make crash injuries worse, especially injuries to the brain, spi- nal cord, or heart.
4-4 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Your vehicle has the Anti-Lock Brake Sys- tem (ABS), an advanced electronic braking system that will help prevent a braking skid. When you start the engine and begin to drive away, ABS will check itself.
4-5 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E Braking in Emergencies With ABS, you can stee r and brake at the same time . In many emergencie s, steering can help you more than even th e very best braking. Traction Control System (TCS) Your vehicle has a tra ction control system that limits wheel spin.
4-6 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System If your vehicle has all-wheel drive (AWD), the AWD system operates automatically without any action required by the driver. If the front drive whe els begin to slip, the rear wheels will automatica lly begin to drive the vehicle as required.
4-7 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E favorable conditi ons you will want to go slower. If you need to reduce your speed as you approach a curve, do i t before you enter the curve, while your front wheels are straight ahead. Try to adjust your speed so you can “drive” through the curve.
4-8 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E into the right lane agai n. A simple maneu- ver? Not necessarily! Passing another vehicle on a two-lane high way is a potentially dan- gerous move, since the passing vehicle occupies the sa me lane as oncoming traf - fic for several seco nds.
4-9 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E acceleration skid, too much throttle causes the driving wheels to spin. A cornering skid is best handled by easi ng your foot off the accelerator pedal. Remember: Any traction contro l system helps avoid on ly the acceleration skid.
4-10 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E build up a film caused by dust. Dirty glass makes lights dazzle and flash more than clean glass would, ma king the pupils of your eyes contract repeatedly. Remember that the headlamps light up far less of a roadway when you are in a turn or curve.
4-11 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E Driving Thro ugh Deep Standing Water Driving Throu gh Flowing Water Some Other Rainy Weather Tips • Turn on your low-beam head lamps – not just your parking lamps – to help make you more visibl e to others.
4-12 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. Drive at the same speed most of the other drive rs are driving. Too-fast or too-slow driving breaks a smooth traffic flow.
4-13 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E does, your vehicle can leave the road in less than a second, and you could crash and be injured. What can you do about highway hypn osis? First, be aware that it can happen. Then here are some tips: • Make sure your vehicle is well ventilated, with a comfortably cool interior.
4-14 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E of the road. Drive at speeds that let you stay in your own lane. • As you go over the top of a hill, be alert. There could be something in your lane , like a stalled car or an accident. • You may see highway signs on moun- tains that warn of special problems.
4-15 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E vehicle has a traction system, you will want to slow down and adjust your driving to the road conditi ons. Under certain conditions, you may want to turn the traction system off, such as when driving through deep snow and loose gravel, to help main tain vehicle motion at l ower speeds.
4-16 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E able from the cold. But do it as little as pos- sible. Preserve the fuel as long a s you can. To help keep warm, you can get out of the vehicle and do some fairly vigorous exer- cises every half hour or so until help comes.
4-17 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E Tire and Loadin g Information Label Label Example 1556694 A vehicle specific Tire and Loading Infor- mation label is attached to the vehi cle’s center pillar (B-pillar). Wi th the driver’s door open, you will find the l abel attached below the door lock post (striker).
4-18 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E Example 1 1273153 Example 2 1273154 Example 3 1273155 Refer to your ve hicle’s tire and loadi ng information label for spec ific information about your vehicle’s maximum vehicle capacity weight and seating position s.
4-19 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E Certificat ion Label 52D059 A vehicle specific Certificati on/Tire label is found on the rear edge of th e driver’s door. The label shows the size of your o riginal tires and the infl ation pressures needed to obtain the gross weight capacity of your vehicle.
4-20 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E Towing Towing Your Vehicle Consult your dealer or a professional tow- ing service if you need to have your dis- abled vehicle towed. If you want to tow your vehicle behi nd another vehicle for recreational purposes (such as behind a mo torhome), refer to “Recreational Vehicle Towing” follo wing.
4-21 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E the ground. It can be towed wi th car carrier equipment. Level Control Your vehicle may have this feature. This self-adjusting type of leve l control is fully automatic and will provide a better le veled riding position as well as better ha ndling under a variety of passenger and loading conditions.
4-22 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E Three important consi derations have to do with wei ght: • Weight of the trailer • Weight of the trailer tongue • Weight on you r vehicle’s tires Weight o.
4-23 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E • Will you have to make any holes in the body of your vehicle when you in stall a trailer hitch? If you do, reme mber to seal the ho les when you remove the hitch. If you do not seal them, deadly carbon monoxi de (CO) from your exhaust can get into your vehicle.
4-24 DRIVI NG YOUR VEHI CLE 78J00-03E your rig. Acquaint yourself wi th the feel of handling and bra king with the added weight of the trailer. And always keep in mind that the vehicle you are driving i s now a good deal lon ger and not nearly as responsive as your vehicle is by itself.
4-25 DR IVIN G Y OU R V EHIC LE 78J00-03E 4) Reapply the regu lar brakes. Then apply your parking brake, and then shi ft to PARK (P). 5) Release the regular brakes.
