1-12 C7SIM-Q User ’ s Manual Slow Blinking LED for Suspend-State Indicator When the CPU goes into a suspend state, the chassis power LED will start blink - ing to indicate that the CPU is in the suspe nd mode. When the user presses any key , the CPU will wake-up and the LED indicator will automatically stop blinking and remain on.

2-2 C7SIM-Q User's Manual JPUSB2 2-2 Motherboard Installation All motherboards have standard mounti ng holes to t different typ es of chassis. Make sure that the l ocations of all the mounting holes for both motherboard and chassis match.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-3 Installation Instructions Install the I/O shield into t he chassis. Locate the mounting holes on t he motherb oard. Refe r to the layout on the previous page for mounting hole locations. Locate the matching mount ing hol es on the chassis.

Notes: Always connect the power cord last and always remove it before add - ing, remov ing or chang ing an y hardw are co mponents.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-5 Align the CP U key that is the semi-circle cuto uts against the socket keys. Once the CPU key is aligned, carefully lower the CPU straight down t o the socke t (Do not drop the CPU on the socket. Do not move the CPU horizontally or vertically) .
2-6 C7SIM-Q User's Manual W arning: The CPU will only seat inside the socket in one direction. Make sure it is properly inserted before closing the load plate. If it doesn't close properly , do no t force i t as it may damage your CPU . Instea d, open t he load plate again and do uble-check if the C PU is aligned prop erly .
Chapter 2: Installation 2-7 Do not apply any thermal grease to the heatsink or the CPU die for the required amount has already been applied. Installing a Passive CPU Heatsink Screw#1 Screw#2 Motherboard Mounting Holes Finish the installation by fully tightening all four screws.
2-8 C7SIM-Q User's Manual W arning: We do not recommend that the CPU or the heatsi nk be removed. However , if you do need to uninstall the heatsink, please follow the instruc - tions below to uninstall the heatsink to prevent damage done to the CPU or the CPU socket.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-9 Thermal Grease Heatsink Fins Installing an Active Fan CPU Heatsink Locate the CPU Fan power con - nector on t he motherboard. Position th e heatsink so that the heatsink fa n wires are closes t to the CPU fan power co nnector and are not interfered with o ther components.
2-10 C7SIM-Q User's Manual Recommended Supermicro heatsink: SN K-P 00 46A 4 active heatsink Align the four heatsink fasteners with the mounting holes on the mother - board. Gently push the pairs of diago - nal fasteners (#1 & #2, and #3 & #4) into the mounting holes until you he ar a click.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-1 1 Unplug the power cord f rom the power supply . Disconnect the heatsink fan wires from the CPU fan header . Use your nger tips to gently press on the fastener cap and turn it counter - clockwise to make a 1/4 (90 0 ) turn, and then pull the fastener upward to loosen it.

Chapter 2: Installation 2-15 JPUSB2 2-5 Control Panel Connectors/IO Ports The I/O ports are color coded in conformance with the PC 99 specication. See Figure belo w for the colors a nd locations of the various I/O ports .
2-16 C7SIM-Q User's Manual JPUSB2 2. Front Control Panel JF1 contains header pins for various buttons and indicators that are normally located on a control panel at the front of the chassis. These connectors are de - signed specically for use with Super Micro server chassis.

Chapter 2: Installation 2-19 Power Butt on The Power Button connection is located on pins 1 and 2 of JF1. Momentarily contacting both pins will power on/off the system. This button can also be con - gured to function as a suspend button (with a setting in the BIOS - see Chapter 4).

2-22 C7SIM-Q User's Manual JPUSB2 Fan Headers The C 7SIM-Q has four chassis fan headers (Fan 1 to Fan 4) . Fan 4 is the CPU Fan. Fan 1 to Fan 3 are system/chassis fans. Note: Pins 1-3 of a 4-pin fan headers are backward compatible with the tradi - tional 3- pin f ans.

Chapter 2: Installation 2-33 Clear CMOS JBT1 is used to clear CMOS. Instead of pins, this "jumper" consists of contact pads to prevent the accidental clearing of CMOS. T o c lear CMOS , use a metal object such as a small screwdriver to touch both pads at the same time to short the connection.
2-34 C7SIM-Q User's Manual JPUSB2 USB W ake-Up Use the JPUSB jumpers to enable the funct ion o f "System W ake-Up via USB devices", which allows you to "wake -up" the system by pr essing a key on the USB or PS/2 keyboard or by clicking the USB o r PS/2 mouse of y our system.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-35 JPUSB2 GLAN LEDs There are two Giga bit-LAN ports. Each of these Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports has two LEDs. The yellow LED (right) indicates activity , while the Link/Speed LED (left) may be green, amber or of f to indicate the speed of the connecti on.

Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-1 Chapter 4 BIOS 4-1 Introduction This chapter describes the AMI BIOS Setup Utility for the C7SIM-Q . The AMI ROM BIOS is stored in a Flash EEPROM and can be easily updated. This chapter de - scribes the basic navigation of the AMI BIOS Setup Utility setup screens.
4-2 C7SIM-Q How to Start the Setup Utility Normally , the only visible Power-On Self-T est (POST) routine is the memory test. As the memory is bei ng tested, press the <Delete > key to enter the main menu of the AMI BIOS S etup Utility . From th e main menu, you can access t he other set up screens.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-3 System Overview: The following BIOS information will be displayed: System Time/System Date Use this option to change the system time and date. Highlight System T ime or Sys - tem Date using the arrow keys. Enter new values through the k eyboard.
4-4 C7SIM-Q 4-3 Advanced Setup Congurations Use the arrow keys to select Boot Setup and hit <Enter> to access the submenu items: BOOT Feature Quick Boot If Enabled, this option will skip certain tests during POST to reduce the time needed for system boot.

4-6 C7SIM-Q ting. Select Auto for the BIOS to automatica lly select the CPU multiplier setting for your system. The options are Default and Manual. Clock Spread Spectrum Select Enable to use the featu.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-7 Simultaneous Multi-Threading (Available when supported by the CPU) Set to Enabled to use the Hyper-Threading T e chnology , which will result in increased CPU performance. The options are Disabled and Enabled. Active Processor Cores Set to Enabled to use a proc essor's Secon d Core a nd beyond.
4-8 C7SIM-Q Advanced Chipset Control The items included in the Advanced Settings submenu are listed below . Memory Remap Feature When enabled, this feature allow s the remapping of everlappe d PCI memory above the total physical memory . The settings are Enabled and Disabled.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-9 SA T A#1 Conguration If Compatibl e is se lected, it sets SA T A#1 to legacy co mpatibility mode, se lecting Enhanced will set SA T A#1 to native SA T A mode. The options are Disabled, Com - patible, Enhanced. Congure SA T Aas This feature allows the user to select the drive type for SA T A#1.
4-10 C7SIM-Q Disabled t o all ow da ta to be transferred from and to the dev ice o ne se ctor at a time. Select Auto to allow data transfer from and to the device occur multiple sectors at a time if the device supports it. The options are Auto and Disabled.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-1 1 Select UDMA1 to allow the BIOS to use Ultra DMA mode 1. It has a data transfer rate of 25 MBs. Select UDMA2 to allow the BIOS to use Ultra DMA mode 2. It has a data transfer rate of 33. 3 MBs. Select UDMA3 to allow the BIOS to use Ultra DMA mode 3.
4-12 C7SIM-Q PCI IDE Bus Master When enabled, the BIOS uses PCI bus mastering for reading/writing to IDE drives. The options are Disabled and Default. ROM Scan Ordering This item determines what kind of option ROM to activate over another . The options are Onboard First and Add-on First.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-13 Serial Port Mode This feature allo ws the user to set the serial port mode for Co nsole Redire ction. The options are 1 15200 8, n 1 ; 576 00 8, n, 1; 384 00 8, n, 1; 192 00 8, n, 1; and 9600 8, n, 1. Flow Control This feature allows the user to set the ow control for Console Redirection.
4-14 C7SIM-Q The options are: The Early Alarm: Select this setting if you want the CPU overheat alarm (includ - • ing the LED and the buzzer) to be triggered as soon as the CPU temperature reaches the CPU overheat threshold as predened by the CPU manufacturer .
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-15 The Earl y Alar m – the Ove rheat LED and system buzze r will be activated exactl y when the Hig h level is re ached. The CP U fan wi ll run at full speed to bri ng the CPU temperature down. Note: In both the alarms above, please take immediate actio n as shown below .

The B alanced setting is recommended for regular systems with normal hardwar e co ngurations. Select Energ y S aving for the onboard fans to run at 30 % of th e Initial PWM Cycle for bes t power efciency an d maximum quietness.

Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-19 4-4 Security Settings The AMI BIOS provides a Supervisor and a User password. If you use both pass - words, the Supervisor password must be set rst. Superv isor Passw ord This item indicates if a supervisor password has been entered for the system.
4-20 C7SIM-Q Use t his featu re to co ngu re Boot S etti ngs: Boot Device Priority This f eature allows the user to specif y the seq uence of priority for the Boot Device. The settings are 1st boo t device, 2nd boot device, 3rd boot device , 4th boot device, 5th boot de vice and Disabled.
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-21 Hard Disk Drives This feature allows the user to specify the sequence of priority from the available Hard Drives . 1st Drive [SA T A: XXXXXXXXXX] • 2nd Drive [SA T A: XXXXXXXXXX] • Removable Drives This feature allows the user to specify the boot sequence from available Removable Drives.
4-22 C7SIM-Q Save Changes and Exit When you have complete d the syst em con guration changes, select this option to leave the BIOS Setup Utility and reboot the computer , so the new system con - guration parameters can take effect. Select Save Changes and Exit from the Exit menu and press <Enter>.
Appendix A BIOS Error Beep Codes During the POST (Power-On Self -T e st) routines, which are performed eac h time the system is powered on, errors may occur . Non-fatal errors are those which, in most cases, allow the system to continue the boot-up process.
