Chapter 1 Introduction Over the past few y ears, deregula tion and privatization ha ve created intense competition in the worldwide telecommunications mark et. The marketplace has continued to evol ve as voice and data solutions become more integrated and next - generation wireless , video, and messaging technologies emerge.
versions) off er features that mak e them ideal for use in rack - intensive deployments in less-than-ideal environ- ments. With consistent, small-footprints, Netr a servers allow for easy deployment in industry-standard rac ks.
Cable/Broadband Government agencies are der egulating bandwidth, making hundreds of megahertz of bandwidth available f or the emerging technologies and s ystems providing broadband wireless access.
The Netra 240 server inc ludes integrated high-bandwidth networking, supported by the Solaris Operating System. A wide r ange of middlewar e applications is also available to r educe implementation and deployment time.
• Serial Management: An RJ-45 serial por t provides a console port as well as an out - of-band serial management interface. • USB: T wo USB por ts support ZIP drives and other peripherals. • SCSI: An external Ultr a160 SCSI por t enables connection of disk arra ys and other high- speed storage de vices.
Chapter 2 Netr a 240 Server Architectur e Sun designed the Netra 240 server s to deliver multiprocessor performance, scalability , and flexibility in con ven- ient 2 RU enclosur es.
Sun Microsystems, Inc. Front Access Normal operations in a deployed environment typicall y involve , at some point, tasks such as putting a server in standby mode, s wapping a hard disk drive, or r e - configuring the system.
• T wo USB por ts • One full- length PCI slots and two half - length PCI slots • Daughter - board connector for the optional Sun Crypt o Accelerator 500 boar d • System management controll er .
• Dual DTLBs with progr ammable page size support offer performance impro v ements for floating point - intensive applications. • A 128 -bit DDR1 SDRAM memory inter face oper ating at 133 MHz/266 MHz lever ages commodity memory to provide e xceptional price/ per formance and high main memory throughput.
with main memory , improving sequential PCI DMA performance. This approac h minimizes J-Bus tr ansactions for I/ O and enhances performance for I/ O access to main memory . In addition, the JIO Hostbridge ASICs suppor t PCI DMA write and read bursts of 1 KB (32-bit PCI) and 2 KB (64-bit PCI) with no disconnect.
Serial Ports Serial ports provide a convenient wa y to connect Netra 240 servers to terminal and other serial de vices using two asynchr onous serial por ts. The serial A por t (RJ-45 connector) is used as a console and serial interface to the System Management C ontroller ASIC and ALOM.
Based on the Broadcom BCM5822 co-processor , the SCA 500 board accelerates a variety of computa tion- inten- sive cryptographic algorithms f or security protocols in e- commerce applications. The SC A 500 daughter board off - loads SSL functionality normally performed by system CPUs.
S ystem Configur ation Card System administr ators often need to r eplace or upgrade a server with minimal downtime. T o facilitate faster upgrades and r epairs, the System C onfiguration Card (SC C) stores the Netra 240 server’s s ystem configuration, including the host ID, MA C address, and NVRAM settings.
The following table summariz es the Netra 240 server’s enclosur e and power specifications. T able 2-2: Enclosur e and power specifications of the Netra 240 server . Configur ation Netra 240 Server Dimensions Height: 87.4 mm (3.44 in.) – 2 RU Width: 425 mm (16.
Chapter 3 Softw are f or Deploying Highly-A vailable Services The need for continuous opera tion in mission- and business- critical environments demands not onl y well- designed hardwar e but sophisticated softwar e capabilities as well.
many of the k ey elements that enable ef ficient, centralized administr ation and automation. For e xample, admin- istrators can boot Sun systems r emotely over the network and can install operating systems from r emote system administration server s.
ALOM supports the following remote s ystem management capabilities: • Host status monitoring and automatic server r estar t: ALOM monitors en vironmental conditions, as well as the status of the power suppl y and fans in the Netra 240 server . It provides a service indica tor and event or failur e notice to administr ators.
• Reduce tr affic congestion and increase network ef ficiency • Control user and application access to netw ork resources • Gather detailed network use statistics and accounting data f or usage .
Chapter 4 Service Solutions Qualified system administra tive talent is increasingly e xpensive and hard to find in the T elecom industry . As an organization continues to grow , it must extend the e xper tise of its valuable s ystem administrative staff—asking it to manage larger and larger numbers of s ystems.
W orkforce Development Solutions A properly tr ained staff can help ensure high l evels of availability , fast and accur ate deployment of new pr oducts and services, quic k identification of problems, and r apid response to system fail ures and interruptions.
Chapter 5 C oncl usion T oday’s organiz ations are facing many c hallenges. T elecommunications opera tors must be on- line 24 hours a day and systems must be managed to handle peak loads without disruption or service degr adation.
