Introduction 10 1 Intr oduction 1.1 About this manual This manual describes how t o install and use the MediCal ® Pro softw are . Some of the functions in MediCal Pro are ac cessible in Advanc ed user mode only . In the manual, these functions are indicated by this symbol: 1.
Introduction 11 MediCal Pro supports BARC O displays as well as displays from other brands. It allows the c onnection of the following optical sensors: Barc o LCD sensor , Barco Serial sensor , X -Rite DTP92 (serial and USB), W el lhofer Luxor LXPlus, Solar PMA2200 , Minolt a LS100, Verilum CPOD (serial and USB) and T ektronix TJ17.
Introduction 12 1.4 The main window a t start -up MediCal Pro alw ays starts in Standard user mode . In Standard user mode , the main window consists of the Q/A Check section, allowing you to run and check Q/A tasks.
Introduction 13 • T est Pattern s... button: Click to open the Te st Patterns dialog. F rom this dialog you can select to display test patterns. • Q/A Setup ... button: Click to open the Q/A Setup dialog. Fr om this dialog you can see which tasks are scheduled.
Introduction 14 The Q/A Check section is the s ame as described above . The Configura tion section in the main window gives an overview of the imaging boards and displays attached to the w orkstation. Moreov er , it allows to setup or change the configur ation and perform sever al actions to the displays in the configur ation.
Introduction 15 • If an optical sensor has been used f or executing a c ertain task , the last used sensor is depicted in the Configur ation section. • Y ou can perform a number of actions to the displays when they are listed in the Configur ation section .
Introduction 16 Remove Displ ay Remov e a display icon fr om the configuration. Identify Check which imaging board he ad is connected to the selected displa y . The number of the head will appear on the selected display . Preset s Define targets for white lev el, black level and display function, and stor e them in a preset.

First installation 18 2 First Installation 2.1 Overvie w If you install MediCal Pro on a medical viewing station for the first time, you should go through the steps listed below . These steps ar e just listed here , as an overvie w of the c omplete installation.

First installation 21 2.2 Installation o f the har dwar e MediCal Pro can be used on any viewing station that runs on Windows NT4, Windows 2000 Profe ssional or Windows XP Profes sional. The viewing station can contain an y number of displays, Barc o and non-Barco displays.
First installation 22 2 Video connection: C onnect the video and sync inputs of e ach display to a differ ent imaging board head inside the viewing station’s com pu te r . The leftmost display must be connected to head A , the second leftmost display to he ad B, et c.

First installation 24 Click on the Browse... button if y ou want t o change this directory . Click on the Next> button to conti nue. 10 Choose the setup type that correspond s to the viewing station on which MediCal Pro is installed: A syst em with CRT displays or with flat panel displays.
First installation 25 4 If the system c ontains no Barco flat panel displays, nor Bar co CR T displays c onnected to the USB bus, MediCal Pr o will notice that there is no configur ation set up in the progr am yet. It will ask if you want to log in as Adv anced user , to set up th e configur ation.
First installation 26 Note : Prior to c onnecting the viewing s tation to the MediCal Administrat or server , the medical facility to which the vie wing station belongs, must be added already to MediCal Administr ator . For more information, please consult your system administr ator .
First installation 27 3 The Wizard will start searching f or the server on the network. Click on Next t o start the se arch. If the Wizard does not find the server or if there are problems t o register to the server , you will have to exit the Wizard.
First installation 28 6 Enter the viewing station detail s: W orkstation name , Department name, Room number and Floor . Click on Next . 7 The entered information is added to MediCal Administrat or .
First installation 29 8C l i c k o n Finish to go to the MediCal Pro main wi ndow . 2.5 Setting up the c onfigura tion Introduction The medical viewing station consists o f a computer , a number of imaging boards (c ontaining one or more heads), an optical sensor and one or more displays.
First installation 30 An example of a medical viewing sta tion consisting of one PC with four imaging board hea ds and four Barc o flat panels connected. Those panels have an internal op tical sensor . The configur ation is the logical representation of the viewing s tation’s components in MediCal Pro .
First installation 31 1 Configur ation setup This page indicates the start of the Wizard. At the same time, a charact er appears on the screen of e ach display . It refers to the imaging board head the displa y is connect ed to . It will be visible during the complete setup proc ess.
First installation 32 3 Sear ching for Barc o displays The Wizard looks if there are Barc o displays connect ed to the workstation comput er via serial data connection.
First installation 33 There are two pos sibilities: 4a The number of found Bar co displa ys equals the number of imaging board heads in the vie wing station Click on Ne xt to continue .
First installation 34 Ye s : Y ou can proceed with the Wizar d, adding Barco- and / or non-Barco displays. Continue with step 5. No: The Wizard giv es a sear ch error . Refer to “Solving C onfiguration Setup Wizard sear ch errors” on page 40 for more information about what to do in case of a sear ch error .
First installation 35 If you are adding non-Barc o displays as well, please c ontinue with the followi ng step. 6 Contr ol non-Barc o displays If there are more heads in the comput er than found Barco displa ys or if no Barc o displays w ere found a t all, the Wizard asks if you w ant to add non-Barco displa ys to the configur ation.
First installation 36 7 Remaining imaging boar d head The Wizard allo ws to logically link a non-Barco display to each remaining imaging board he ad. The Wizard makes a suggestion of the head t o link the display to by inverting the colors of the char acter in the display’s low er right corner .
First installation 37 8 Define display Enter the br and name, type and serial number . Indicate if the displa y is a flat panel or CRT display . Also , you ha ve to indicat e whether the display is a gra yscale display or not.
First installation 38 Display function Select the required display function fr om the drop- down list. For most medical viewing applications, w e rec ommend you select the DIC OM display function, as this function resu lts in the most visible gra yscales.
First installation 39 Enter the desired white and black luminance, e xpressed in cd /m² or f l, depending on the application settings. 11 Calibr ation Y ou can choose to calibra te the displays and poss ibly run a QA check on the displa ys after finishing the Wizar d.
First installation 40 12 Configur ation setup complete The Wizard is completed. Select Finish to return t o the main window . The display icons are no w filled in in the main window’s Configur ation section.
First installation 41 The most common causes of failur es in finding Ba rc o displays are: • Data cables not or wrongly c onnected • Some of the displays hav e equal remote addresse s. The remote addres ses can be set by means of the display’s OSD menus.
First installation 42 The Wizard no w continues with s tep 3 of the normal, pr eviously described sequenc e. If the connection problem persists , the Wizard will arrive at the search error page again. If this is the case, the problem may be caused by overl apping remot e addres ses (ID’s).
First installation 43 3 The Wizard indicates it will start an inter active proc edure to set the remote addresses c o rrectly . First, check if the data cables between the computer and all Barco displays ar e connect ed corr ectly . When re ady , click on Next to c ontinu e.
First installation 44 7 Y ou have to r epeat the p revious step on the other Barco displa ys, in descending or der tow ards the c ompu ter . Read and follow the instructions of the Wizard car efully . 8 After having disc onnected each displa y one by one, r econnect all da ta cables.
First installation 45 After a few sec onds, the selected display shows a test pattern. At the same time, the display alignment dialog appears. The adjustments in the Alignment wi ndow are c ombined in a number of groups (display alignmen t families).
First installation 46 East- W est geometry settings White uniformity settings (on c olor displays only) Special settings The Alignment dialog contains the follo wing elements: • The icons at the top of the dialog indicate the differ ent alignment families (e.
First installation 47 Horizontal geometry settings Horizontal position (course) Position the middle vertical line of the test image appro ximately in the cent er . This is a course adjustment . Y ou will get the opportunity to fine - tune later in the proc edure.

First installation 49 horizontal line appears under the be zel. This is the A WS line that is coming do wn again. Note : If you are unable to shift the AKB lines high enough until they have completely disapp eared, repeat the adjustm ent with a somewhat higher AKB remov a l val u e.
First installation 50 Ve r t i c a l u n i f o r m i t y This adjustment is especially neces sary when the display is operating in the southern hemisphere or near the equator . Adjust to remove purity or uniformity errors, especially in the center o f the image.
First installation 51 T o adjust the astigmatism: 1 In the adju stment dialog , select the zone you want to adjust by clicking on the corre sponding number in the “Zone- selection” area. The corr esponding zone of the tes t image is highlighted. 2 Gently drag the Static F ocus slider completely t o the right (maximum adjustment).
First installation 52 2.7 Defining Pr esets Introduction For each displa y in the configuration, y ou must define a Preset. The Preset is very important in the Q/A concept. In a preset you define the display’s re ferenc e for visual behavior . With this refer ence , we wan t the display t o be conf orm.
First installation 53 Select Preset s... from the drop-down menu. The Presets dialog appears. The left column sho ws the installe d presets. The right windo w pane shows the properties o f the preset selected in the left c olumn. Y ou can select an installed preset and, if nec essary , modify its properties.

First installation 57 Absolute v alue (Chr oma - color displa ys only) Select this option if you wish t o enter a numeric target v alue. This option is preferr ed for Barco displa ys. Chroma (color displa ys only) Enter the color tempera ture or chroma v alue for black in the Kelvin or xy fields.
First installation 58 Display function Select the required display function fr om the drop- down list. For most medical viewing applications, w e rec ommend you select the DIC OM display function, as this function resu lts in the most visible gra yscales.
First installation 59 2.10 Defining the Q/A task trigger set t ings The tasks can be categorized in thr ee groups, depending on the impact they have on the user and the applications running on the viewing station. The task categories are: The trigger settings determine when the tasks will be e xecuted after the y have bec ome due.
First installation 60 2 Select the Trigger Settings tab . 3 Set the trigger settings. The possible trigger sett ings are:.
First installation 61 When the user logs in T asks that have become due, wil l be executed at t he mom ent a user logs in on the workstation. This is a good setting for tasks that r equire a user interaction (non- intervention-free). The tasks are e xecut ed after they have bec ome due and at the moment someone logs in on the workstation.
First installation 62 No trigger settings de fined If you do not check any of the trigger settings, the task will not start automatically , even when it has be come due. The task can be run manually only . 2.1 1 When will a task start? First condition: T ask is due The first condition for a task to start, is that it is or becomes due.
First installation 63 Exampl e: Let us again suppose that the Measure Quality Le vel task is scheduled weekly , on Thur sday at 10 PM. Let us also suppose the trigger settings for this task are set to: "When the screen saver is activ ated". On Thursday a t 10.

Using MediCal Pr o 66 3 Using MediC al Pr o 3.1 Starting up T o start MediCal Pro , proc eed as follows: 1 If the viewing station contains Barc o displays, make sure ther e is no on-screen display (OSD) on the screen of the displays. Please r efer to the display’s user manual to know how to do this.

Using MediCal Pr o 68 3.3 Changing passwor ds When you have logged in as adva nced user , you can change the advanc e d user password. T o change the advanc ed user passwor d: 1 From the main window , press Alt - A on the keyboard or select T ools – Options – User Login.
Using MediCal Pr o 69 • Y ou can also calibrate a display by right -clicking on its icon in the main window , and selecting Calibrate ... from the drop-down menu. Calibr ating Barc o displays with built -in I- Guard sensor The Barco C oronis flat panel displays hav e a built -in optical sensor that communicates with MediCal Pro .
Using MediCal Pr o 70 Important : Make sure there are no application window s or other items (e.g., the cursor) displayed under the sensor . They would cause the calibration to fail.
Using MediCal Pr o 71 Full scr een calibr ation Full screen calibration is pos sible on Barco CRT displays only . The optical sensor must be c onnected to the displa y to be ab le to perf orm full scre en calibration. The function is gra yed if no t available on the display .
Using MediCal Pr o 72 Make sure the sensor is c ompletely c overed (so that no light can enter the sensor) and click on OK . 2 Put the sensor , with Ambient Light Shield if appropriat e, on the image on the screen. Important : Make sure there are no application window s or other items (e.
Using MediCal Pr o 73 4 The black luminance target v alue is determined now . The sensor measures a black patch. The re sult of the measurement is shown in a smal l Measure window in the c orner . a) If you hav e specified an absolute va lue for black luminance in the Preset, MediCal Pro displa ys this value in the message.
Using MediCal Pr o 74 6 The black luminance and white luminance measurements may influence each o ther , so that the value of the first step changes wh en the second st ep is done. Therefor e, you ha ve to repe at both steps (steps 3 and 4) until both value s remain stable.
Using MediCal Pr o 75 T o open the Q/A task setup window: In the main window , click on the Q/A Setup... button. The Q/A Setup window appea rs. When MediCal Pro is installed, a default task schedule is fille d in. The Q/A Setup window give s the following information: T ranspar ent inter- vention-fr e e The task runs complet ely in background.
Using MediCal Pr o 76 Adding tasks By defau lt, the task schedule contains a number of task s. Other tasks ar e installed as plug-in. Y ou can add them to the schedule in the following way : 1 From the Q/A task se tup window , click on the Ta s k S e l e c t o r.
Using MediCal Pr o 77 2 Select Status > Di sable d to disable the task . A s a result, the task will not be ex ecuted until it is manually enabled again. Select Status > E nabled to enable the task to be executed. The task will be executed ac cording to the ent ered schedule.
Using MediCal Pr o 78 Notes: • After enabling and scheduling a task , it may still not appe ar as a due task . The cause of this may be that the display(s) in the configuration are not calibrated. Some task s can be executed on calibr ated displays only .
Using MediCal Pr o 79 Description of the tasks T o display a task description 1 In the Q/A setup window , right - click on the name of the task of which you wish to vie w the description. A drop-down menu appears (see above). 2 Select Info ... The task description appears.

Glossary 107 Viewing station The medical viewing station consists of a computer , a number of imaging boards (containing one or more heads), an optical sensor and one or more displays. They are all co nnected physically , by means of cables and connectors.
Glossary 108 This is called a dual head imagi ng board. It is like two complete imaging boards implemented on one sing le unit. A dual head board in the computer behaves exactly as if two separate boards were installed. DIC OM DICOM stands for Digit al Imaging and Communicatio ns in Medicine .
