25 Chapter 3 Upgrading and Maintaining Components This chapter describes upgrade and maintenance procedur es. ! Before opening the system unit, save an d close all open files , exit all open applications , turn off the power to al l attached peripheral devices , shut down the computer , and unplug the power cord.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 26 Removing the Side Panel Y ou must remove the side panel to acce ss the system boar d, add-in cards, power supply , battery , memory , and internal drives. 1 Locate the tab on the upper right side of the rear panel, and pull it back until the side panel releases.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 27 Replacing the Side Panel 1 Align the tabs on the side panel to the chassis frame. 2 Press the side panel firmly against the unit until it snaps into place.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 28 Removing a PCI Add-in Card 1 Remove the side panel (see “Removing the Side Panel” on page 26). 2 Disconnect any cables attached to the add-in card you want to rem ov e. 3 Remove the screw that secur es the add-in card to the chassis.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 29 5 If you do not replace the car d or install another add-in card, install a slot cover over the vacant slot at the rear of the chassis (see “Covering an Open I/O Slot” on page 42). 6 Replace the side panel (see “Replacing the Side Panel” on page 27).
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 30 Installing a PCI Add-In Card 1 Remove the side panel (see “Removing the Side Panel” on page 26). 2 Locate an available expansion slot. 3 Remove the slot cover adjacent to the selected slot (see “Removing a Slot Cover” on page 41).
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 31 6 Attach any necessary cables to the card (see the instr uctions that came with the add-in card). 7 Replace the side panel (see “Replacing the Side Panel” on page 27). 8 T urn on the computer and follow any instructions that came with the add-in card.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 32 Replacing the Lithium Battery Y ou may need to replace the lithium ba ttery if your computer consistently loses the date or time settings after turning it off. The lithium battery has a typical life of three years, after which the battery may be too weak to power the CMOS memory .
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 33 8 If necessary , remove any add-in car ds (see “Removing a PCI Add-in Card” on page 28) to gain access to the battery .
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 34 16 If the error message “Err or: Check date and time settings.” appears during the reboot sequence, pr ess F2 during the reboot process to access the BIOS Setup Utility .
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 35 Removing a Memory Module Y ou may need to remove a memory module if you change the memory configuration or replace a bad module. By default, all of your computer ’s memory sockets are filled with a pa ir of RIMM modules and a pair of CRIMM modules.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 36 4 Push down the handle on each side of the memory module to eject the module from its socket. 5 Grasp one edge of the memory module and lift out.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 37 Installing a Memory Module 1 Choose the size of the memory module and configuration as shown in the following table. Memory modules can vary in size and speed between sockets. The minimum memory size is 128 MB. The maximum memory size is 1 GB.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 38 8 Remove the AGP add-in card. ✍ Grasp the card with one hand on each end, and gently pull up as you rock the card from side to side . ! Hold the add-in card by its edges and do not touch an y components or contacts on the card.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 39 9 Align the module over the appropriate socket, noting the location of pin 1 on the module and pin 1 on the socket. 10 Carefully but firmly insert the edge of the module into the socket. 11 Press down firmly and evenly at both corners until the module is fully seated.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 40 12 Replace the AGP card and secur e using the screw removed earlier . 13 Replace the power supply (see “Replacing the Power Supply” on page 49). 14 Replace the side panel (see “Replacing the Side Panel” on page 27).
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 41 Removing a Slot Cover Y ou remove a slot cover when you install an add-in car d that occupies a previously empty slot. 1 Remove the side panel (see “Removing the Side Panel” on page 26). 2 Locate the slot whose cover you want to remove.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 42 Covering an Open I/O Slot Slot covers prevent air fr om escaping through the empty hole. If air escapes, the components inside the computer cannot be properly cooled. This may damage some components, especially the main processor , which generates the most heat.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 43 Installing an Internal Hard Disk Drive Models that have one hard disk driv e ar e equipped with an available bay to hold an additional 3.5-inch hard disk drive. Y our system can support A T A-33, A T A-66 or A T A-100 hard disk drives.
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 44 3 Disconnect the drive connector (A). 4 Disconnect the power connector (B). 5 Pull out on the tab (C) that secures the drive holder to the chassis.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 45 6 Slide the drive holder up and out. 7 Slide the new drive into the bottom pa rt of the drive holder and align the holes on each side of the drive holder . 8 Secure the drive to the drive holder using scr ews in each of the two holes on each side of the drive holder (screws ar e provided with the new drive).
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 46 9 Slide the drive holder back into th e chassis so that the edge of the holder is flush with the chassis. 10 Push in on the tab (A) to securely latch the holder to the chassis. 11 Connect the inner drive cable connector (B) to the first drive.
Upgrading and Maintaining Components 47 T o identify additional hard disk space When you initialize the new hard disk drive, it must be configur ed as an extended partition in W indows NT file system (NTFS) format. 1 Log on in W indows® as Administrator .
V AIO Digital Studio System Reference Manual 48 Removing the Power Supply Y ou remove the power supply when you insert a memory module (see “Removing a Memory Module” on page 35). 1 Remove the screw that secur es the power supply to the rear of the chassis.
