13259 0303 5 THE BASICS The following is intended to familiarize users with common term s and applications of Home Theater equipment. Sources - your receiver can directly provide audio from its built-in AM/FM tuner. It can al so provide limited video from its on-screen menu system.

13259 0303 13 MAKING THE CONNECTION It’s tempting to just plug in your new A/V receiver an d have gre at sound pour out. Before you do that, take a few minutes to plan out how you wa nt the receiver to fit in to your audio/video system.
13259 0303 14 AUDIO / VIDEO CONNECTIONS Connecting your analog sources to y our processor Audio / Video source - conne cting a DVD/VLD play er to the receiver’s analo g inputs. Use the same instructions for connecting to other audio / video sources such as a television, satellite receiver, cabl e box, etc.
13259 0303 15 DVD Audio using the Coax digi tal inputs (optio nal) – your receiver allows for an option to co nnect a 5.1 DV D Audio or other 5.1 surround format device, to the receiv er’s DVD Audio input when NO coax digital inputs are to be used.
13259 0303 16 DIGITAL CONNECTIONS Connect digital inputs (DVD, VLD, etc.) to the re ceiver. You will need either coa xial or optical digital inputs to play Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DTS surround sou nd processing. Digital connection s are also recommended for P CM sources.

The AVR 202+ receiver allows further proc essing of the surround cha nnels for the pre cise decoding of Dolby Digital Surround EX and DTS-ES soundtracks via matrix decoding.

13259 0303 19 ANTENNA CONNECTIONS The FM jack is a stan dard screw on F-type connector. The AM is a push type. Strip ¼ inch of insulation off your AM antenna wires and insert one wire end into each hole whil e holding the tabs down. Release the tabs to lock in the AM antenna wires.
13259 0303 20 FREQUENTLY AS KED QUESTIONS My collection of equipment differs fr om the labels on the back of my recei ver, how can I hook them up? Your receiver provides 5 identical sets of inputs - V1, V2, DVD, CD, and SAT. Each of these has analo g audio, composite video, S-video, coaxial digital audio, and optical digital a udio.

Do I need some sort o f converter to make direct digital recordings? No, your receiver will conv ert optical to coaxial and coaxial to opti c al.

13259 0303 28 Speaker Levels Speaker level calibration al lows you to equalize the volume levels of each speaker to make up for differences in speaker characteristics and distan ces from the li stener to the speak ers.
13259 0303 29 Crossovers + LFE Usually these settings may be left set to the factory defaults . However, your receiver allows ‘fine tuning’ of the system parameters most useful in setting up a hig h end audio system.

13259 0303 31 Set your LFE (.1) channel lev el - Usually this will be set to 0.0 dB (def ault). However, if you have no subwoofer you may wish to reduce the low frequ ency effects (LFE) c hannel to lessen i ts contribution to the ba ss going to your remaining large sp eakers.
13259 0303 32 Set subwoofer phase - In addition to the subwoofer location a djust ment (see Speaker Location abo ve), your receiver has an option to ‘invert the phase ’ of the information sent t o the subw oofer.

However, theses settings allow you to correct or reduce the various tonal errors that oc cur during reproduction of audio in a home theater. The room equalization menu allows for two types of adjustments.

This setting is not necessary if there is no need for a DVD a udio or other 5.1 input sou rce When you select Yes for a particular input, any p reviously selected DV D Audi o input will be aut omatically reset to No.
13259 0303 44 Use volume with presets - Recalling a preset normally recalls the entire system settings that were present when the preset was saved. Howeve r, you may wish to recall presets with the current volum e setting, rather than the volume setting when the preset was saved.
13259 0303 45 MEMORY BACKUP Your receiver continually saves any settings you have made even if power is lost. However, you may wish to save a backup of your settings in ca se of inadvertent changes to them. To pe rform a backup follow the procedure below.
13259 0303 46 OPERATION The following outlines the norm al day-to-day operation of your proce ssor from the supplied universal remote or directly from your processo r’s front panel. The universal re mote is also capable of controlling other equipment and storing sequences of commonly used commands.
13259 0303 47 CHOOSING A SOURCE In general, the selected source will appear at the Zone 1 (A) output, t he TAPE output, and the V1 output. To prevent feedback, TAPE input will not appear at TAPE output and V1 input will not appear at V1 output.

13259 0303 49 AUDIO MODES Your receiver is de signed to wo rk with 4 audio li sten ing modes. Under normal operation you may simply select Mono, Stereo, Surround or DVD Audi o via the remote cont rol. In addition, you may choose an audio listening mode immediately followed by a speaker sele ction.
13259 0303 50 Audio Mode description MONO Sums the incoming audio information to a single channel and rout es it to the desired speaker. Useful during FM tuner operation having weak RF signal stren gths. It may al so be useful when you have a large group where it is difficult to put everyone near the optimum listening position.
13259 0303 51 Speaker selection 8 ‘DIRECT’ - allows selection of the ‘analog’ signal s connected to the currently selecte d input sources L & R RCA audio inputs ove rriding the use of optical o r coax S/PDIF. No processing is applied to the audio signals other than lev el control.
13259 0303 52 EQUALIZATION ‘EQ’ Selecting an EQ functio n via the remote control - all ows you to override how th e audio is cu rrently being processed. This is where you may se t the Dynamic Range to eit her Normal (default) or Limited for late night listening while using Dolby Digital bit streams.
13259 0303 53 Select variable ‘EQ 1’ - to allow separate bass and treble settings for u se with all input sources. Many systems allow only a djustment of bass and treble leve ls at fixed frequency points.
13259 0303 54 Select loudness ‘EQ 2’ - sets the eq ualizer to use preset filter curv es designed for use when using low list ening levels. The human ear’s frequency re sponse varies with volume level. At high levels it has relatively flat response, while at low levels its sensitivity to high and lo w frequen cies is redu ced.
13259 0303 55 PRESETS Presets allow you to save your favorite settings and recall them instantly. Your receiver can store two banks of 40 presets (0..39) in each of 2 Z ones.
