Before connecting the AC cord The rated volta ge of y ou unit sh ow n on t he rear panel i s 120 V AC . Check that t he rated vol tage m atch es y our local voltage IMPORTANT Connect th e speakers, antenn as, and all optional equi pme nt first. Then connect the A C cord in th e end.
2 Connect the surround spea kers to the m ain unit. (only for NSX-A54 ) There are no differen ces between the surrou nd speakers. Conn ect each surroun d speaker cord to the SURROUND SPEAKERS R o r L terminal. 3 Connect the supplied a ntennas. Connect the FM an tenna to the FM 75 Ω terminals and the AM antenna to the AM L OOP terminals.
• Do not brin g the A M antenna n ear other optional equi pmen t, the stereo sy stem itself , the AC cord or the speaker cords, since no ise will be picked up. • Do not unwind the AM antenna w ire. POSITION ING TH E SPEAKERS (N SX- A54 o nly) Position the speakers to make the m ost of the SURROUND effect.
To connect other optional equ ipm ent → pag e 21. PREPARATIONS (cont.) pg. 5 REMOTE CONTROL Inserting batteries Detach the battery cover on th e rear of the rem o te control and in sert two R 6 (size AA) batteries.
- The line of sight between the rem ote control and the remote sensor inside the d isplay w indow is exposed to intense light, such as d irect sunlight. - Other rem ote controls are us ed nearby (th ose of a television , etc.) BEFORE OPERATION To turn the u nit on Press one of the f unction bu ttons (TAPE, TUNER, VIDEO/AUX,CD, MD).
VOLUME Turn the VOLUME control on the m ain unit, or press the VOLUME button on the remote control. The volum e level is dis play ed as a nu mber f rom 0 to MAX (31). The volume level is automatically set to 16 wh en the power is turned off w ith the volume leve l set to 17 or more.
This unit pro vides the following three different equalization curves. ROCK : Powerful sound emphasizing treble and bass POP : More presence in the v ocals and m idrange CLASSIC : Enriched soun d with heavy bass and fi ne treble Press the G EQ button s.
1 Press the TUNER/BAND button repeatedly to select the desired band. When the TUNER/BAND button is p r essed while the pow er is off, the power is turned on directly . To select a band with the remote control Press the BAND button while pressing the SHIFT butto n.
The unit can store a total of 32 preset stations. (Each ban d has a max im um of 20 available preset stations .) When a station is stored, a preset num ber is assigned to the station. Use the preset n um ber to tune in to a preset station directly. 1 Press th e TUNER/BAND button to select a band, and press the DOWN or UP butto n select a statio n.
To change the AM tuning in terval The default setting of the A M tunin g interval is 10 k Hz/step. If y ou use th is unit in an area w here frequen cy allocation sy stem is 9 kHz/step, ch ange the tu ning in terval. Press the P OWER b utto n while p ressing the TUNER/BAND button.
Load discs. To play all discs in the disc com partm ent, press the butto n. Play begins with the d isc on tray 1. To play one di sc only, press one of the DISC DI RECT PLAY bu ttons. The selected disc is played once. To stop p lay, press the button. To pause play , p ress the button.
RANDOM/REPEAT PLAY Use the rem ote control. RANDOM play All the track s on the selected disc or on all th e discs can be play ed random ly. REPEAT play A sing le disc or all the discs can be play ed repeatedly . Press the RANDOM/REPEAT button w hile pressing the SH IFT but t on.
To select the 25t h track, pres s the +10, +10 an d 5 button s. To select the 10th track, press the +10 and 0 bu ttons. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to program other tracks. 5 Press the button to start play. To check the pr ogram Each tim e the or bu tton is pressed in stop m ode, a disc n um ber, track n um ber, and program number w ill be display ed.
Insert a tape w ith the ex posed side down . Push the cassette h older to close. 2 Press the button to start play. : The fron t side is being pl ayed (f orw ard). : The back side is being play er (reverse). To sele ct a reverse mode (deck 2 only) Each tim e the REV MODE button is pressed, the reverse m ode chang es.

mech anism. RECORDING pg. 13 BASIC RECORDING This section explains h ow to record f rom th e tuner, CD player, or extern al equipm ent. Preparation • Set the tape to the point where recording w ill start. • Use Ty pe I (norm al) and Type II (h igh/C rO 2 ) tapes for recording .
When the selected f unction is C D, playback and recording start sim ultaneously. To stop recording, press the button. To pause recording, press the button.
1 Press the T APE button . 2 Insert the origin al tape into deck 1 and the tape to b e recorded on into deck 2. Insert the tapes w ith the sides to be played back or recorded on first facin g out f rom the u nit. 3 Press the TAPE/DECK 1/2 button to select deck 1.
RECORDING (cont.) pg. 15 AI EDIT RECORDI NG The AI edit function enables CD reco rd ing without w orrying about tape length and track length. When a CD is inserted, the unit automatically calculates the total track length. If necessary , the o rder of tracks is rearranged so that no track is cut shor t.
6 Press the REC/REC M UTE button to s tart recording. The ta pe is re wound to the b e ginning of the fro nt side, the lead se gment is played thro ugh fo r 10 seco nd s, and recording starts. When recording on th e front (side A ) ends, recording on the back (side B) starts.
Programm ed edit fu nction enables C D recording w hile check the rem aining time on each side of the tape as th e tracks are program m ed. NOTE The programmed edit recording will not start from a point halfway in the tape. The tape must be recorded from the be ginning of either sid e.
After con firm ing B on th e display, repeat step 5. 8 Press the REC/REC MUTE button to start recording. The tape is rewound to the b e ginning o f the front side, the lead s egment is played thro ugh for 1 0 sec onds, and recording starts. When recording on th e front side (A ) ends, recording on the back side (B) starts.
Use m icrophon es w ith m ini plugs ( 3.5 m m, 1/ 8 inch). 1 Connect your m icrophone to the MIC jack. 2 Press one of th e function bu ttons to select th e s ource to be m ixed, and play the source. 3 Adjust the volum e and tone of the source. 4 Turn the MIC VOL control to adjust the m icrophone volum e.
Cancel To change the tim e lag setting of the Auto Vocal Fader or Auto Multiplex func tion The muted orig inal sing er's voice can be tu rned faster to th e normal lev el. When Auto Vocal Fader or Auto Multiplex is selected, " A-VF" or "AUTO MP X" is d i splayed fo r 3 second s and changes to the selected function name.

The unit can be turned o n at a specified time every day w ith the b uilt-in timer. Preparation Make sure the clock is set correctly. Use the rem ote control. 1 Press the TIM ER button w hile pressing the SHIFT butt o n once to displa y , and press the SET but ton within 4 seconds.
To check the specified tim e and source Press the TIMER button wh ile pressing the SHIFT button. The tim er-on tim e, the selected source nam e and the duration f or the timer- activated period are display ed for 4 seconds.
To check the tim e remaining until the power is turned off Press the SLEEP b utton o nce wh ile pressing the SHIFT b utton. The remaining time is displayed for 4 seconds. To ca ncel the sleep timer Press the SLEEP b utton twice while pressing the SHIFT button so that " SLEEP" o n the display disappears.
Rem ove the dust cap f rom th e CD DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) jack. Then, conn ect an optical cable plug to th e CD DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) jack. When the CD DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) jack i s not being used Attach th e supplied dust cap. SUPER WOOFER JACK Connect an optional p owered sub w oofer with a built-in- amplifier to the jack.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE Occasional care and m aintenan ce of the u nit and the sof tw are are needed to optim ize the perform ance of your u nit. To clean the cabinet Use a soft and dry cloth. If the surf aces are extrem ely dirty , use a sof t cloth lightly moistened with mild deterg ent sol ution.
