14 BASIC OPERA TION AND QUICK REFERENCE The DP1 camera has many advanced features. This section, describes basic camera operation. Y ou can find mor e deta ils in later section s. PREP ARA TION Chargi ng the battery (P .19) Charge the suppli ed lithium-ion battery with the provided battery ch arger .

17 PREP ARA TION This section describes necessa ry prep arations before u sing the camera. A TT ACHING THE CARR Y STRAP 1 Undo the end of the strap. 2 Atta ch the camera strap to camera strap eyelet on both sides as show n. 3 Reassemble the cam era strap as shown.
18 LENS CAP T o preserve the lens, the lens cap is att ached. If you do not use th e camera, please keep the lens cap atta ched. HOW T O REMOVE THE LENS CAP Remove the len s cap as shown. A TT ACHING T HE LENS CAP Fit the lens ca p keeping the SI GMA log o horizonta l.
19 LOADING THE BA TTER Y A lithium-ion battery , BP-31, is pr ovided with the DP1 camera. Char ge the batter y befo re usin g the ca mera for the fir st time. Ch arge t he batt ery by the supplied batte ry charger , BC-31, when the ba ttery is empty .
20 LOADING THE BA TTER Y 1 Open the Battery / Card Cover i n the dir ectio n of t he arro w , a s sh own in the instruction. 2 Insert the battery into the chamber in accordance with the di agram. Ɣ Insert the battery u ntil it locks into pl ace. 3 Close the co ver securely .
21 T O REMOVE THE BA TT ER Y 1 Make sure the camera is turned off and open the Ba ttery/Card Cover in th e direction as shown by the arrow . 2 Eject the battery by sliding the b attery comp artment cover latch in the direction of the arro w , as shown in the illustration.

24 SETTING THE LANGUAGE Y ou should receive the DP1 camera pre-set to English , however , if necessary , you can chang e the ca mera language yourself. 1 Remove the lens cap a nd turn the came ra on. 2 Press the button. 3 T o op en the [ Set Up ] menu, press the button.
25 SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The DP1 camera records the date and time wh en each image is captured and stores th is information with the image. T o ensure that the correct information is recorded wit.

33 INSERTING AND REM OVING THE CARD The DP 1 camer a uses a SD memory card, S DHC memory card and Multimedia card to store da ta. T O INSERT THE CARD 1 T urn of f the camera and open the Batte ry/ Card Cover , as shown in the illustration. 2 Insert the card in accordance with the instruction of Battery/ Card chamber .

35 FORMA TTING THE CARD New cards must be formatt ed before use. In addition, cards with corrupt or incomp atible file systems may need to be formatted before use. 1 Remove the lens ca p and turn the camera on. 2 Press the button. 3 T o ope n the [ Set Up ] m enu, press th e button.
36 SHUTTER BUTT ON The s hutter button of the DP1 came ras has two positions . When you pr ess the s hutter b utton “ halfway down” , the camer a’ s autof ocus sys tems wi ll activate. When pressing the button “al l-the-way down”, th e shutter will rele ase to take a pic ture .
37 BASIC OPERA TION SELECTING THE EXPOS URE MODE The feature s and the operation method s of the four dif ferent exposure modes of the camera are expla ined below . AUT O MODE This mode allows ea sy exposure setting of the camera. It is simi lar to P mode, but w ith less options.

40 A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After y ou set th e aper ture, the came ra wi ll det ermi ne th e approp riat e shut ter speed. If you select sma ller apertures, depth of field will be greate r . Larger apertures tend to blur the background, as depth of field will be shal lower .
41 S SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY AE When you set the desired shutter speed, the camera w ill select the appropriate aper ture value for correct e xposure. Y ou can achieve stop action ef fect s by selecting a fast shutter speed, or give the fee ling of motion to a moving subject by sele cting a slow shutter speed.
42 M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shutter speed and apertu re value acco rding to the indi cation of the exposu re meter . Y ou can ch ange the exposu re, as you desire. 1 Set the Mode Dial to the M position. (The shutter speed value is illuminated in green.
43 USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH The cam eras have built-in flash for taking p ictures at night or in low light , whi ch is v ery conv enient. 44 FORCED FLA SH When you pop-up the built-in fla sh, you can use your camera in this mode. x Please use th is mode fo r ordinary pho tography . RED-EYE R EDUCTION FLAS H When taking a picture with flash, so metimes the p erson’s eyes reflects the fla sh light and the “ redeye” phenomenon will appear i n the picture.
45 FOCUSING Adjustment of autofocu s and man ual focus ope ration are explained below . HOW T O USE AUT OFOCUS Position the ph otographic subject within the centre of the compos ition an d pres s the shutter b utton “half - way”. x If auto focus is selecte d, the focusing point will be illuminated in g reen.
46 AF AREA SELECTI ON The AF area of the DP1 is equipped with 9 focusing points and it is possib le to select the desired fo cusing poin t. 1 T o ope n [ Shooting Menu ], press t he button. 2 Use the button to sele ct [ AF Ar ea ] and pre ss the button.
47 MANUAL FOCUS In situa tions where autofocus or focus lock is no t effe ctive, you can focu s manually . 1 Set the focus mode to MF mode by pressing butt on sever al ti mes. ( MF icon and “ the scale bar” will b e displayed on the color LCD monitor).

49 CONTINUOUS SHOOTING [Cont inuous] In this mode, when you keep the shutte r button full y depressed, the camera will ta ke pictures con tinuously . x The maximum nu mber of frames is three in c ontinuous mode.
50 ADV ANCED OPERA TION This se ction expl ains t he appl icati on of t he more advanc ed f uncti ons of your camera, when composing th e expressions of your picture. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE 㧔 WB 㧕 The color of light reflected by an object can vary depending on the color of the light source ill umina ting it.

52 SETTING A CUST OM WHIT E BALANCE For more pre cise control of the white balance setting or when pho tographing under unusual ligh ting conditions , the " Set Cu stom WB " optio n can be us ed to capture a sample of neutral object in a s cene to be use d for color co rrection.
53 SETTING THE SENSITIVITY 㧔 ISO EQUIV ALENCY 㧕 The photos ensit ivit y of di gital camer as is described in terms of “ISO equivalent” like silver-halide film camera s. 56 IMAGE P ARA METER SETT ING 1 Press the button to open [ Shooting Menu ]. 2 Select [ Contrast ], [ Sharpness ] or [ Saturation ] by using the buttons and press the button.
57 SELECTING THE METERING MODE The c amer a h as th ree a dvanc ed mete ring modes. 1 Press the button to open [ Shooting Menu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Metering Mode ] and press the button.
58 CAUSION!! x Images taken using Spot metering w ill be indicated as Center Metering in the Image Information Window of SIGMA Photo Pro . AE LOCK The camera w ill fix and memorize the exposure val ue whilst the “AE” Lo ck butt on is depress ed. When you wis h to l ock th e expos ure of a subj ect of f-center , AE lock is very useful.
59 x It is possible to use the button to select settings other tha n AE Lock [ AEL ]. [ Center AF Lock ] Ensure the subjec t is within the center focu sing point and press the button to activate and lock the au tofocus. Please note, o nly the center focusing point will be used when the button is pressed.
60 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you want to intentiona lly overexpose or underexpose the picture, use this function. 1 Press the button. (The exp osure compensation valu e is displayed in green in the lower right of the color LCD monitor . 2 Select the desire d compensation value by usin g th e buttons.
61 AUT O BRACKETING This function of the camera lets you t ake a sequ ence of pictu res of the same subjec t at three different exp osur e level s; Appr opri ate Expo sure, Under Exposure and Over Exposure. If it is dif ficult to determine the proper exposure, p lease use this function.
62 TIP x Three frame s will be taken contin uously by pressing the shutter button. When t he Drive M ode is set to the Self Timer, only 1 fram e will be taken each time the shutter button is pressed. x If the [ Quick Preview ] in the [ Set Up ] men u is set to other than [ Off ], three ima ges can be viewed at a time .
63 COLOR SETTINGS In addition to st andard color setting s of the DP1, it is a lso possible to sele ct Sepia and Monochrome (B&W) ph otography modes. 1 Press the button to open [ Shooting M enu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Color Setting s ] and press the button.
64 DIGIT AL ZOOM The DP1 camera is equi pped wit h a digi tal zoom functi on. TO SET DIGIT AL ZOOM 1 Press the button to open [ Shooting Menu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Digi tal Zoom ] and press the button. 3 Select [ On ] by u sing the buttons.
65 IMAGE WITH SOUND It is possible to record soun d for up to 10 second s after t aking a picture. This function is convenien t for recording shooting informatio n at the time of t aking the photograph . SETTIN G THE IMAGE WITH SOUND 1 Press the butto n to select [ Shooting Menu ].
66 WARNING !! x Once Image with sound is set, the camera will continue to hold this setting unti l [ Off ] is slected in step 3 . TIP x The sound re cording will b e stored as a WAV file . It will be stored in the same fo lder and ha ve the sa me file name a s the image file.
67 REVIEWING AND DELETING IMAGES This se ction explains h ow to review and delete image s after they have been captu red. TIP x The DP1 may not be able to displa y images captured by other cameras, or “DP1 ” imag es th at have been rena med or m oved fr om the DCIM folder on the ca rd.

74 VIEWING IMAGES WI TH SOUND Play sounds that have been re corded with Images ( P. 6 5 ) or play the voice memo function ( P. 8 9 ). 1 When the ima ge with sound is selected during image review , the I con and the Control Icons ar e displayed on the co lor LCD monitor .

77 HISTOGRAM The histogram is a graph depi cting the distribution of brightness value s in the imag e for ea ch of the three color channe ls (Red, Green, and Blue ). T he horizont al axis shows th e brightness le vel, with darke r pixels towar ds the lef t side and brighter pixels to ward the right.
78 VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The DP1 camera can be connecte d to a television or a video device using the provide d A V cable, al lowing the recorded images to be view ed on the television m onitor or reco rded on vi deo recording media. 79 DELETING FILES This section describes how to delete the files reco rded on a ca rd. Files recorded on the card can be deleted one at a time or several at once using the Delete Men u. WARNING !! x This chapter refers to still imag es, sound and movie files.
