25 INITIAL SETTINGS SELECTING THE TRANSMISSION MODE The mac hine has two modes for s ending fa xes: mem ory transmis sion and di rect transmi ssion. T o change mode s, press the [MEMORY ] key. The ME MORY indic ator lights up when me mory transm ission is selected, a nd goes o ff when d irect tran smission is sele cted.
26 INITIAL SETTINGS SELECTING THE RECEPTION MODE Your m achine ha s three m odes for receivi ng incomi ng call s and faxe s: ● AUTO mode : Select t his mode when you o nly want to receive f axes on yo ur telepho ne line. Th e machin e will aut omatical ly answer a ll calls and rece ive inco ming faxes .
27 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS FOR A UT O RECEPTION You can set the nu mber of rin gs before th e machine answers i n AUTO mod e following th e proce dure below. 1 Press the [MENU] key. 2 Pres s the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PROGRAM" appea rs, and then pres s the [OK] key.
28 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS FOR MANU AL RECEPT ION The num ber of ring s before the machine answers in MANUAL mode can also be set. If you do not want the machine to answer at all in MA NUAL Mode, select "0" in Step 4 below.
29 INITIAL SETTINGS SELECTING THE RECEPTION P APER SIZE Set the s ize of paper to be used to print recei ved faxes. A size setting other than " A4", "8.5x1 1", or "8.5x14 " is regarded as out of p aper. To set th e paper s ize, see "LO ADING PAPE R" in the Operation Gu ide (for MX -B201D).
30 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE NUMBER OF RECALL TIME S The mac hine will a utomaticall y reatte mpt transmi ssion when a transmis sion is not su ccessf ul because the line i s busy or a communica tion erro r occurs. This setting is used to selec t the number of recall att empts that will b e made.
31 INITIAL SETTINGS When a communication error occurs You can select the number of recall attempts m ade when a c ommunic ation erro r occurs. If "0" i s entered, th e machin e will not mak e any rec all attempts .
32 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE RECALL INTER V AL The mac hine will a utomaticall y reatte mpt transmi ssion when a transmis sion is not su ccessf ul because the line i s busy or a comm unicatio n error occ urs. This s etting is us ed to sel ect the inter val betwe en recall attempts.
33 INITIAL SETTINGS When a communication error occurs You can select the interval be tween rec all attempts when a commu nication error occu rs. An interv al from 0 to 15 minutes can be sele cted.
34 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE INDEX FUNCTION You can print an in dex mark a long the ed ge of the pa ges in ea ch job. Thi s makes i t easy to se parate differ ent jobs on the out put tray. Use the fo llowing pro cedure to s et the index function: 1 Press the [MENU] key.
35 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING RESOLUTION PRIORITY For mos t faxing jobs , you will m ost likely wa nt to specif y the resol ution. Howe ver, you c an also set a default resoluti on when no s etting is m ade using the [RESOLUTIO N] key. To turn on this functi on, follow the procedure below: 1 Press the [MENU] key.
36 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING UP THE MA CHINE FOR U SE WITH A PC MODEM The mac hine is s et to automa tically be gin recepti on if you pick up fr om an extens ion telep hone and th e machine detects a fax tone .
37 INITIAL SETTINGS USING THE REMO TE RECEPTION FUNCTION The mac hines Remot e Receptio n feature is designe d to allow you to activ ate fax rec eption from an extens ion telephon e. The Rem ote Reception function operates ev en when the F AX Signal Receive func tion is tur ned off.
38 INITIAL SETTINGS Setting a Fax Remote Number: 1 Press the [MENU] key. 2 Pres s the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PROGRAM" appea rs, and then pres s the [OK] key. 3 Pres s the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "13:FAX REMOTE NUMBER" appears, and then press t he [O K] key.
39 INITIAL SETTINGS PBX SETTING Please note that this setting is only available in Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, Iceland , Norway and Sweden. The uni t is connec ted to a PBX , you can pr ogram it to a cess au tomaticall y to publi c line outs ide PBX.
40 INITIAL SETTINGS ST ORING NUMBER S FOR A UT OMA TIC DIA LING Automa tic Dialin g is a qu ick and co nvenient way to dia l by using only a Rap id key (Ra pid Ke y Dialin g), or press ing the [SPE ED/SEARC H] key and s elect the SPEED and en tering a two digit numb er (Speed Dialing).
41 INITIAL SETTINGS 9 Enter the name of the destination with the numeric keys. Enter th e name of th e locatio n or par ty by press ing numeric keys as descr ibed in "HO W TO ENTER CHARACTERS" on page 21 (m aximum of 20 char acters). If y ou do not want to ent er a name, skip th is step.

43 INITIAL SETTINGS ST ORING NUMBERS UNDER GROUP KEYS Group keys allo w you to di al a group o f fax numb ers by si mply pres sing the appr opriate G roup ke y once. The y are conven ient for t he Broadca sting functi on, which is used to tran smit an o riginal to a group of fax machin es.
44 INITIAL SETTINGS 9 Enter a name for the Group Key with the numeric keys. Enter th e name of th e group by pressing numeri c keys as descr ibed in "HO W TO ENTER CHARACTERS" on page 21 (m aximum of 20 char acters). If y ou do not want to ent er a name, skip th is step.

46 USING THE MA CHINE WITH AN ANSWERING MA CHINE USING AN ANSWERIN G MA CHINE When yo ur answe ring machi ne is conne cted to the mach ine and rec eiving a voice m essage, you can recor d the messag e after the answering machine ri ngs. When c oming a fa x, the mach ine will au tomatica lly recei ve it after the answer ing machine rings.
47 2 Chapter 2 CHOOSING SUIT ABLE MEDIA ORIGINALS SUI T ABLE FOR F AXING Make sure that th e original s you want to fax mee t specific ations and gu idelines listed in this secti on. SIZE AND WEIGHT The si ze and weigh t of origi nals that y ou can load i n the RSPF d epend on wh ether yo u load one sheet at a time or severa l sheets a t once.

49 3 Chapter 3 HO W T O USE THE F A X FUNCTION The mac hine offers a range of s ophistica ted featur es that allow you to control im age quali ty, recepti on mode, broadc asting, poll ing, and t ransmiss ion prior ities.
50 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION When pl acing the O riginal on the document g lass: 1 Confirm that there are no original(s) in the RSPF, and open the RSPF. 2 Place the original face down on the document glass. Align the original according to th e original sc ale in the illustration below.
51 OPTIONAL TRANSMISSION SETTINGS There ar e several transmissi on settin gs that yo u can make b efore diali ng and trans mitting a n original. ORIGINA L SIZE The orig inal size can be set to "A4", "8.5x11 ", or "8 .5x14".
52 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION RESOLUTION To do th is, press the [RESOLU TION] key one or mo re times unt il the des ired res olution s ettings appe ar in the displa y, and then press the [OK] key. Your fa x has five resolution settings: • STANDARD Use STANDA RD for ordi nary orig inals.
53 HO W TO USE THE F AX FUNCTION CO VER SHEET You can have yo ur fax generate a cover s heet and s end it as the last p age of the t ransmiss ion. The co ver sh eet includes the date an d time, the sender's na me and numb er, and the rec eiver's name and number if an auto matic dialing number is used.
54 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION MESSA GE FUNC TION One of th e following m essages c an be selec ted: "CONFID ENTIAL", "PL S. DISTRIBUT E", "URGE NT", "PLS. CALL BACK ", "IMPO RTANT ". To add a message to a cover s heet, follow these steps : 1 Pres s the [COVER SHEET ] key.
55 HO W TO USE THE F AX FUNCTION TW O-SIDED ORIGINAL TRAN SMISSION FUNCTION The RSP F can be u sed to autom atically fax a two-si ded origin al. If des ired, the bac k of the ori ginal can b e rotated 180° befo re transmi ssion. Follo w these st eps to fax a tw o-sided origin al: 1 Plac e the or igina l(s) in the RSP F.
56 DIALING AND TRANSMITTING Once you have set the origina l (eithe r in the RSP F or on the document gla ss), and ha ve selec ted the de sired transm ission settings , you are r eady to di al the num ber of the receivin g fax mac hine and t ransmit the orig inal.

58 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION USING THE SEARCH KEY If you do not remem ber the Ra pid key or Sp eed Dial n umber in which you h ave stored a particul ar fax numbe r, you can sea rch for the number b y following the steps below: 1 Press th e [SPEED/SEARCH] k ey twice.
59 IF THE MEMOR Y BECOMES FULL WHILE SCANNING AN ORIGINAL If the mem ory become s full wh ile scanni ng an origi nal, "MEM ORY FULL E RROR" will appear in the display and scanning wil l stop. If the mem ory beco mes full wh ile the fi rst page is being scan ned, sca nning will s top and the transmissi on will be canceled.
60 RECEIVING F AXES You can set the ma chine to one of thre e modes o f reception , AUTO , MAN. , or A.M. (Answering Machin e). To selec t the recept ion mo de, press the [RE CEPTION MODE] ke y until th e desired r eceptio n mode app ears in the displa y.
61 OPTIONAL RECEPTION SETTINGS The mac hine has v arious opti onal set tings for the recepti on of faxe s. TW O-SIDED RE CEPTI ON (MX- B201D on l y) This func tion is us ed to print a received fax consisti ng of two or more pages of the same s ize on both s ides of the paper.
62 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION RECEIVE REDUCE You may on occ asion re ceive f axes tha t are la rger than the paper l oaded in the mach ine. To ensure that you do not lose an y part of the origina l, you shoul d use the Receive Redu ce function , which scales the fax to the printin g paper size.
63 WHEN USING MANU AL SENDING AND RECEIVING You need to use the [SPEAKER] key or an extensio n telephon e to perform manual s ending and receiving. For informa tion about connecti ng an extens ion telep hone See "C ONNECTING O THER DEVICE S" of Sta rt Guide.
64 SENDING A F AX DIRECTL Y FR OM A COMPUTER (PC-F ax) A docu ment in a computer c an be tr ansmitte d via the m achine as a fax. Fax es are s ent usin g the PC-F ax function in the same way as docu ments ar e printed.

66 D A T A TRANSFER If there is a proble m with the mac hine, you c an use the Data Transfer fun ction to have r eceived fa xes read into memory and then sen t to a differ ent fax m achine for printing. This func tion is us ed when yo u cannot p rint received f axes, for example whe n the mach ine runs out of ton er, or a misfeed occurs.

68 TRANSMISSION RESER V A TION When yo ur fax i s busy re ceiving an origina l or trans mitting an origin al from m emory, you can "rese rve" a transm ission by setting th e original (either i n the RSPF o r on the do cument glas s), readi ng it into mem ory, and enterin g the fax n umber.
69 BR O ADCASTING This functi on allows y ou to send the same origi nal to as man y as 100 different lo cations with just one operation. Once th e original is loaded, i t is scann ed and sto red in memo ry. The fax n umbers you have ente red are then autom atically d ialed in su ccession , and the or iginal is transmitted to each l ocation.
70 SPECIA L FUNCTIONS Broadcasting using a Group key If the fax ma chines to which yo u want to broadc ast have all been program med into on e Group key, y ou can perfor m the broa dcasting op eration usi ng the followi ng simpli fied proced ure. Refer to "STORING NUMBERS UNDER GROUP KEYS" (p.
71 POLLING Pollin g allows you to reque st another fax mac hine to send an origina l to your fax machin e. In other words, the receivi ng fax machi ne, not the transmitting fa x machi ne, activate s the tra nsmission. Y ou can use y our fax to b oth poll and be polle d by others .
72 SPECIA L FUNCTIONS SERIAL POLLING You can poll se veral fax m achines one at a ti me with a si ngle seria l pollin g operation. A maxi mum of 100 fax machine s can be polled in on e serial po lling op eration. Follow these st eps to use the serial po lling funct ion: 1 Press the [MENU] key.
73 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS POLLING TRANSMISSION (MEMOR Y POLLING) This func tion is us ed to transmi t an original th at has been s canned in to memory to a fa x machine that polls your fax mach ine.
74 SPECIA L FUNCTIONS Adding a original t o polling memory: Use this procedure to add an or iginal to an other origin al that has a lready b een scanned into po lling memory . Place the original in th e RSPF or on the documen t glass and follow the steps below.
75 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS RESTRICTING POLLING M A CHINES (POLLING SECURITY) If you wish to allow only spe cified fax machi nes to poll your fax machine, enab le polling securit y and progra m the fax numbers of t he machines tha t are to be al lowed to pol l your mach ine.

77 TIMER OPERA TIONS The tim er function allows y ou to set a transmis sion or po lling ope ration to be perform ed automati cally a t a time you specif y. Up to five transmiss ion operati ons or pollin g operati ons can be set at any one time, and the times they will be perfo rmed ca n be specifi ed up to a w eek in ad vance.

79 ANTI JUNK F AX You can av oid wasting fax paper by using the Anti Junk Fax functi on. This function blocks recepti on of faxes from up to ten specified p arties. To turn th e Anti Ju nk Fax fea ture on and of f, use the f ollowing pr ocedure: 1 Press the [MENU] key.

82 OPERA TION IN COPY , PRINTER, SCANNER, AND F AX MODES Some ope rations cannot be performed s imultaneous ly when t he machin e is being u sed in prin ter mode, copy mode , scanne r mode, and fa x mode. *1 The next job will be spoo led and s tarted after completing the current job.
