1 CHAPTER 1 Product Overview Features and Benefit s Avocent DSR ® switches combine analog and digital tech nology to provi de flexible, centralized control of data center servers and facilitat e the OA&M (operations, activation and maintenance) of remote branch offices where trained operators may be unavailable.
2 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide The DSRIQ module is po wered di rectly from the target de vice and provides Keep Aliv e functionality when the DSR 1021/1022 switch is not powered. The DSRIQ-SRL (serial) module is a DCE device that provides the primary interface between a serial device and a DSR1021/1022 switch.

5 CHAPTER 2 Installation DSR 1021/1022 Swit ch Connectivity The DSR1021/1022 switching system can co nnect to a server running th e DSView 3 software. DSView 3 software allows a user to view and control target devices (one at a time) attached to the DSR1021/1022 switching sy stem.

Chapter 2: Installat ion 9 2. Plug the VGA monitor and PS/ 2 keyboard and mouse cables into the corresponding DSR1021/1022 switch ports. Y ou must install b oth a keyboard and mo use on the local port, or the keyboard will not initialize pro perly . 3.

Connect the other end of the CA T 5 patch cable to the desired port on the back panel of the DSR1021/1022 switch. 3. Repeat this procedure for all servers you wish to attach.
Chapter 2: Installation 11 DSRIQ modules NOTE: PS/2, Sun and USB DSRIQ modules are available for attaching computers to your DSR1021/1022 switch. Use the DSRIQ-SRL serial module to connect serial devices to the DSR1021/1022 switch. The DSRIQ-SRL features two green LEDs: a POWER LED and a STATUS LED.

21 Local Port Operation Controlling Y our Syste m at the Local Port The DSR1021/1022 switch includes a lo cal port on the back panel. You can use this port to con nect a keyboard, monitor and mouse to the switch for direct access.

Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 25 Configuring OSCAR Interface Menus You can configure your DSR10 21/1022 switching system from the Setup di alog box within th e OSCAR interface. Select the Names bu tton when initially setting up your DSR1021/1022 switch ing system to identify target devices by uniq ue names.
26 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide T o access the OSCAR interface Setup dialog box: 1. Press Print Screen to open the OSCAR interface. Th e Main dialog b ox appears. See Figure 3.1 on page 21 for an illustration of the Main dialog box popul ated with sample data.

28 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide 2. T y pe a name in the N ew Name text field. Names of ta rget devices may be up t o 15 characters lo ng. Legal characters include A-Z, a-z, 0-9, space and hyphen. 3. Click OK to transfer the new name to the Names dialog box .
Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 29 When the DSR1021/1022 switch discovers a cascade switch, the numberin g format changes from a DSR port only to [DSR port]-[ switch port] to accommodate each ta rget device under that switch. For example, if a switch is connected to DSR por t 6, each target device connected to it would be numbered sequ entially.
30 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide T o access the OSCAR interface Menu dialog box: 1. Press Print Screen to launch the OSCAR interface. Th e Main dialog box app ears. See Figure 3.1 on page 21 for an illustration of the Main dialog box populated with sample data.
Chapter 3: Local Port Operation 31 T o set a Screen Delay Time for the OSCAR inter face: 1. T ype in the number of seconds (0-9) to delay the OSCAR display after you p ress Print Screen . Entering 0 will instantly open the OS CAR interface with no delay .

42 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide Viewing and disconnecting user connections You can view and disconnect users through th e User Status dialog box. The usernam e (U) is always displayed; however, you can display either the targ et device name or EID number to which a user is connected.

47 CHAPTER 4 W eb Server Operations Overview of the DS R1021/1022 W eb Server In addition to th e OSCAR on-screen interface, th e DSR1021/1022 switch provides a built in web server to handle all basic KVM switching needs. For enhanced fu nctionality and control of mult iple devices, users can upgrade to the DSView 3 software package.
48 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide About the DSR Explorer Window When a user has been logged in and authenticated, the Avocent DSR Explorer window appears. From the DSR Explorer window, users may view, access and manage their DSR1021/1022 switch.
Chapter 4: Web Server Operations 49 Using the side navigation bar You can use the side navigation bar to display windows in which you can specify settings or perform operations. Figure 4.2 shows the side navigation bar of the DSR1021Explorer window . Figure 4.

By selecting Local Accounts on the side menu bar, Administrato rs may add and delete users, define user preemption and access levels and change passwords.

NOTE: Users can view all applicance information, but only Administrators can cha nge settings.

55 CHAPTER 5 The V ideo V iewer About the V ideo Viewer Window The Video Viewer is used to conduct a KVM sessi on with the target devices attached to the DSR switch. When you connect to a device using the Vide o Viewer, the target device desktop appears in a separate window contain ing bo th the local and the target de vice cursor.
56 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide The Video Viewer client req uires Java version 1.4.2_04 or lat er when opened from Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape or Firefox browsers . The DSR web server au tomatically downloads and installs the Video Viewer the fi rst time it is opened.

When Full Screen mode is enabled, the image adjusts to fit the desktop up to a size of 1024 x 768.

Cursor T ype The Video Viewer window offers five appearance choices for the lo cal mouse cursor.

71 CHAPTER 6 T erminal Operations The Console Menu Each DSR1021/1022 switch can be configured at the appliance le vel through the Console menu interface accessed through the SETUP port on the back panel of the switch. You can access all terminal commands through a term inal or PC running terminal emulation software.

77 APPENDICES Appendix A: FLASH Upgrades You can use the DSR10 21/1022 switch FLASH up grade feature to update your ap pliance with the latest firmware available. You can perform this upd ate by using the DSView 3 softw are or by using a Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server.

Appendices 79 Appendix B: Using DSV iew Sof tware Over a Modem Connection An external modem can be attached to the DSR1021/1022 switch . You can use this mod em to access the switch when an Ethern et connection is not available. A modem/PPP dial-up connection must be establishe d before the remote operation is enabled.
80 DSR1021/1022 Switch Installer/User Guide Appendix C: Using DSRIQ-SRL Modules The DSRIQ-SRL module is a serial -to-VGA converter that permits VT10 0-capable devices to be viewed from the DSR1021/102 2 switch local port or by using the DSView 3 software.

To enable Sun Advanced Key Emulation mode and use these keys, press and hold Ctrl+Shift+Alt and then press the Scroll Lock key.
