Getting Started 1-1 GETTING ST AR TED The Monar ch 7411 Print Server let s you communicate with the Monarch 9825 printe r on a wire d Ethernet 802.3 netw ork, or on an 802.11b or 802.11g wir eless networ k. 802.11b/g refers to 802.1 1b and 802.
System Requirements To use the print se rver for printin g from a wireless networ k, you need an 802.11b/g wireless network. The wireless network con sists of either of the following: An 802.11b/g wireless e nabled PC printi ng straig ht to the p rinter (Ad- Hoc or Peer-to- Peer Mode).
Checking the Print Server Hard ware The print server come s preinstalled and test ed in your printer. Do not plug any cables into the parallel por t when using the print serve r. A printer with this print se rver cannot use t he parallel port. Howeve r, the seria l port is still active.
Verifying Successf ul Installation When the prin t server is turned on, it go es through the follow ing startup sequence: It runs throug h a set of power-up dia gnostics for a fe w seconds. The top orange ligh t comes on when th e unit is turned on. The middle light comes on solid yellow when an Ethernet link (wired 10baseT) is established.

2 CONFIGURING THE 802.1 1b/g AND IP SETTINGS Configuring the Print Server To configu re the print server for a 802. 11b/g wireless network, you must set the wirele ss mode (Ad-Hoc or infrastructure), SS ID, channel (A d-Hoc mode only), data rat e and security.

Note: If the wi reless signal is less th an 50% o n the Wirel ess Status screen, print ing performance could be af fected. To improve the signal stren gth, try moving th e print server cl oser to the computer or access point an d away from other radi o devices such as Blue tooth® wireless devices, microwave ovens, or 2.

3 MANAGEMENT METHODS There are a variety of ways to configure and monitor the prin t server. Th ese methods are: W eb browser, Ne tMgr, MonarchNet Console, HP JetAdmin, HP Web JetAdmin, or Telnet. F or Telnet/co nsole mode information , see Chapte r 6, “ Telnet Co nsole Commands .
Microsoft Windows Network Configuration The print server inclu des the easy-to-use NetM anager software for pr inting from Windows comp uters over an 802.11b/g wire less link. This softwar e creates a networ k port on the Windows system, which acts like a normal parallel port.
Berkeley UNIX Host Configuration Berkeley UNIX h ost computers include L inux, Digital Equipmen t Corporation Digital UNIX , OSF/1, and ULTRI X; Compaq Tru64 U NIX; SunOS (not Solaris), SCO UNIX ; and many othe rs. Sun Solaris, HP/ UX, IBM AIX users should skip to the appr opriate sections later in this manual.

IBM AIX Conf iguration To configure a print server on IBM AIX 4.x, use the SMIT program as follows: 1. Enter smit and select Devices . 2. Select Printe r/plotter. 3. Select Manage remote printer sub system . 4. Select Client services . 5. Select Rem ote printer que ues .
Web Browser This utilit y allows the us er to configure the prin t server with a standa rd web browser like Mic rosoft® In ternet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox®. No addition al software is ne eded on t he system. It can be used on a ny system tha t supports w eb browser capabi lities.
4 USING THE WEB INTERF ACE You can conf igure and man age the prin ter and pri nt server using your Web Browser: Micro soft Internet Explo rer, version 6.
Logging In 1. Start your Web br owser. 2. Type in your printer’s I P address and press Enter . For examp le, 192.0.0. 192. 3. From the side menu, click Login .
4. Type access for the password. To cha nge the password, see “ Setting the Network Card Access Password ,” for mo re informatio n. The pa ssword is case-sensitiv e and saved in the print er’s flash memory.

You can chang e modes, specify your SSID, modify yo ur channel (Ad-Hoc mo de only), netw ork speed, access poi nt density, an d more.

SNMP Netware Traps 1. From the Alerts and Tr aps screen, click SNMP Netware Traps . 2. Enter a commu nity name, I PX address, IPX Node address , and the e rrors you want to receiv e notification fo r. You can enter up to four IPX addresses. 3. Click Submit .
Changing the Passwords 1. You can chan ge the net work access pas sword, ne twork update password, configure ne twork security , IP access, or prot ocol, print a test page, access the console, or update fi rmware from the Web Admin Configurat ion screen.
Setting the Network Card Access Password When set, th e network card access pas sword allows you to view the Web interface an d the remote console. The defaul t is access . The passw ord is case-sens itive and stored in the pr inter’s flash memory. Make a not e of the password if you change it.
Setting the Network Ca rd Update Password When set, th e network card upd ate password allows you to cha nge variables in the Web inter face and the remote con sole. 1. From the side menu, click Admin . T he Web Admin Configur ation screen appears. 2.

Updating Firmware You can upda te the printer’s firmware. Make sure th e Resident (Boot Loader) is versio n 2.3 or greater. 1. From the side menu, click Admin . T he Web Admin Configur ation screen appears. 2. Click Update Firmwa re. 3. The printe r should be conne cted and ready to rece ive data.
Basic Security Configurations There are t wo main decisi ons to be made when choosing wireless securit y: encryptio n method and au thentication protocol. The encryption method determines th e algori thm used t o encrypt the message. The authen tication type speci fies how users are identi fied and ve rified on a n etwork.

5 TROUBLESHOOTING Verify that th e printer is o perating prop erly: 1. Is the printer on line and does it ha ve supplies? 2. If the printer is work ing correctly, test the connection bet ween the printer and the print se rver by pushing the test bu tton on the back of the prin ter for less than five seconds.
If the print server is operating pr operly, all three LE Ds blink momentarily, th en indicate the foll owing activi ty: LED Indic ators Status solid printer is on blinking error Orange off printer is .
5. On the test label, verify your IP and WiFi set tings. If using an Ethernet cable, the “Wired/Wirele ss:” value should be “WIRED”. If using RF, the setting should be “WIRELESS”.
If the con nection succ eeds, press Ctrl-E on your keyboard. This sends an ENQ request. The prin ter respond s with three cha racters. Depending upon the Telnet being used, you may not see the first character, as it is a hex 05 val ue. The ot her two ch aracters are ASCII characters.
Troubleshooting Wireless Configuration Problems 1. Yo ur computer’s wireless adapte r and/or acces s point sho uld be configured to ma tch your print server. 2. The print server should be in range of the printer (90 meter s or 300 feet) and your PC and away f rom metal obj ects and other devic es with radio signals (Bluetoot h®, 2.

6 TELNET CONSOLE COMMANDS Use this chapter to configure the print server using Telnet. You must have a basic understa nding of Telnet commands. For initial setup, do not use Telnet. Use Auto-discover mode . Once you have the IP address, you can use Telnet or a Web brows er.
