Installation 1.
1 .1 Installing SmarThru software About SmarThru software Y ou must install the SmarThru CD-ROM to print, scan, or to send and receive faxes thr ough PC. The SmarThru CD-ROM includes the following: • MFP driver • SmarThru softwar e • OCR software (AnyPage Lite) For details on the drivers, refer to each item’s description.
1 .2 Installing SmarThru software FaxThru It helps you to create fax covers and send faxes thr ough PC. DocuThru General form to work with messages. W ith DocuThru, you can perform all the operations of the SmarThru system. ImageThru It is an image database manager and image editor programme.
1 .3 Installing SmarThru software Hardware requirement 1. T urn off both your machine and PC. 2. Connect your machine and PC with the printer cable (IEEE-1284 compatible). 3. Connect one end of the telephone line cord supplied to the LINE jack on the rear of the machine, then connect the other end of the cor d to the standard phone wall jack.
2. If prompted, select a language. 3. Click Install the Samsung software on your PC . 1 .4 Installing SmarThru software Installation procedure Installing the SmarThru software 1. Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The SmarThru CD-ROM is automatically running and the Samsung SmarThru setup dialogue box will appear .
1. 5 Installing SmarThru software If you select the Custom installation, you may choose the options you want to install. 5. When the installation is completed, you must shut down and restart your computer .
1 .6 Installing SmarThru software 2. The fax modem W izard dialogue box appears. Click Next . Note : If you select the “I Want SmarThru to r eceive and send my e-mail”, skip to step 6. If you do not select any service, electronic fax and E-mail services of SmarThru will be disabled.
1 .7 Installing SmarThru software 4. If necessary , set up the dial properties, then click Next . Note : you can also specify other locations from Samsung DocuThru -> T ools -> Configuration menu.
1 .8 Installing SmarThru software 6. The Internet Connection W izard dialogue box appears. Select the way you are connected to the Internet, then click Next . If you are connected to the internet over LAN (i.e. in an of fice network environment), select “Connection to Internet over LAN” , and go to step 9.
1. 9 Installing SmarThru software 8. Click Add . The available W indows system Dial-Up connection list is displayed. Select one from the list for using in the SmarThr u, then click OK . If no connection is available, you cannot use the system Dial-Up in Samsung SmarThru.
1 .10 Installing SmarThru software 10. Enter the addresses of your incoming and outgoing mail servers, then click Next . 9. Enter your E-mail address, which was assigned to you by your internet service provider then click Next .

Open the Samsung DocuThru , and select Configuration from the T ools menu. 1 1. Enter your POP3 account name and password to access your internet mail server , then click Next .
1 .12 Installing SmarThru software 3. From the Start menu, select Programs . 4. Select Samsung SmarThru , then select Uninstall . The uninstall dialogue box appears.
1. 13 Installing SmarThru software In Windows 3.x 1. Start W indows if not already started. 2. Close all applications which are r unning, if any . 3. From the Program Manager , double click Samsung SmarThru . 4. In the SmarThru windows, double click the Uninstall icon.
1 .14 Installing SmarThru software 6. The uninstallation procedur e will remove all messages and address book from your computer . Y ou can backup your data and restore it later using SmarThru backup utility and agent ‘Export’ option. Please select backup options and backup folder then click Finish .
1. 15 Installing SmarThru software Making a driver diskette The samsung SmarThru softwar e is supplyed with CD-ROM only . If necessary , make a copy of the MFP driver onto a floppy diskette. 1. Please prepar e six (6) 3.5” folppy diskette. 2. Insert the supplied SmarThru CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2 .1 Printing Printing a document This procedur e describes the general steps requir ed for printing from various W indows applications. The exact steps for printing a document may vary depending on the application programme you ar e using. Refer to your software application’s documentation for the exact printing procedur e.
2 .2 Printing Paper tray Automatic paper feeder Manual paper feeder Loading paper For best results, use high quality xer ographic copier paper . Using the automatic paper feeder Y ou can stack paper or transparencies in the automatic paper feeder to feed automatically .
2. 3 Printing 3. Load the print material in the automatic paper feeder . Do not load too much print material. Do not mix types. See the following directions to load each type of print material. • Load paper or transparencies with the print side facing you.
2 .4 Printing • Load letterhead paper with the design facing you. The top edge of the sheet with the logo should enter the printer first. LETTERHEAD 4. Adjust the paper guides to the width of the print material. Slide the guides until they lightly touch the stack of print material.
2. 5 Printing Using the manual feeder If you want to print manually , one piece of media at a time, use this manual paper feeder . Notes: • Make sure that you select the Manual Feeder source and the corr ect paper size from your softwar e application before starting your print job.
2 .6 Printing Paper guidelines When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special media, keep these guidelines in mind: • Attempting to print on damp, curled, wrinkled, or torn paper can cause paper jams and poor print quality . • Use cut-sheet paper only .
2. 7 Printing Printer settings Y ou can use your machine with all your W indows 3.x or W indows 95/98, or W indows NT applications. Be sure to set your printer as the default printer for all your W indows operations. Most W indows software applications allow you to make changes to the printer settings.
2 .8 Printing Print Quality T ab Menu Option Copies (1-999) Scaling (10-200%) Paper Orientation Paper Source Paper Size Paper T ype Functions Sets the number of copies to be printed. Scales the image size on the print page. Sets the orientation (printing direction) of the print media.
2 .9 Printing Advanced T ab This tab is available on W indows NT only . Printing Menu Option Color Document Graphics Dither T ext and Dither Line Large Bitmap Pattern Scale Functions If you find that you are not getting corr ect grays on your printout from an application, turn the Color Document checkbox on.
2 .10 Printing About T ab This tab shows the printer software version. Clicking the image above SAMSUNG WEB SITE links you with Samsung Electronics web site. Using Help Y our printer driver includes comprehensive screen help. For detailed information about each setting, press F1 key except W indows 3.
Changing printer settings for all documents Changing the printer settings from your application pr ogramme will change them for one document. If you want to change for all documents you print on this printer , open the printer Pr operties dialogue box as shown below , then change the printer settings.
Using marThru S Multi-function application 3 This chapter tells briefly about the main features of Samsung SmarThru. For more information and the step-by-step instr uctions, refer to the on-line help.
3. 1 Samsung SmarThru contains the following services: • Samsung ScanThru lets you scan documents and images quickly and easily . Y ou can select the area of image wher e the scanned data will appear , set the image type and r esolution. Y ou can also set the scanned document to be automatically recognized using OCR softwar e.
Scanning with Samsung ScanThru Adjust the document guides to match the width of the document. W ith Samsung ScanThru, you can convert a photo or paper document into a computer image. T ype of documents that you can scan include photos, drawings, magazine pages, newspaper articles, and just about any type of single page image.
3. 3 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru 4. Choose the scan settings and then click Scan . See page 3.5 for more information on the scan settings. Click to open the Samsung ScanThru. Using SmarThru 2. T o open Samsung SmarThru, double-click on the SmarThru icon of the desktop window .
3. 4 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru 6. T o open the image for editing, double-click on the image, or select Edit Image from the Image menu. The opened image will replace the contents of current folder . For information on editing images with ImageThru, see page 3.
3. 5 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru Samsung ScanThru window The controls of the Samsung ScanThr u window are described below . Resets all the controls to their default values. Starts scanning. The scanned image will be saved in Incoming folder of Samsung ImageThru.
3. 6 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru Scanning with the Samsung TW AIN for Scan window Y ou selectively can use the Samsung TW AIN for Scan window to scan an image instead of the Samsung ScanThru window . Also, if you have another scanner driver installed on your computer , you can select the desir ed driver .
3. 7 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru 3. Click the Show TW AIN UI box to be checked. If you want to use another scanner driver , pr ess Select Source button, then select the desired driver from the Select Source list.
3. 8 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru Scanning for automatic text recognition W ith Samsung ScanThru, you can scan a document then recognize the document into a text with a help of the OCR programme, AnyPage Lite. 1. Place your document into the document feeder of your machine.
3. 9 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru 4. Select Scan to OCR box check box ( ). The automatic recognition configuration dialog box appears. This dialog box lets you configure several parameters of automatic text recognition. The controls in this window are described below: Language It allows you to recognize English only .
3. 10 Scanning with Samsung ScanThru 6. Click Scan in the Samsung ScanThru window . The system scans, saves, then starts recognition. When the r ecognition is completed successfully , the result is stor ed in a specified folder with an R TF format. 7.
3. 11 W orking with ImageThru Overview Samsung ImageThru is an image database manager and image editor programme. W ith ImageThru, you can • Organize the images in the database hierar chically using a tree of folders. • Search the database for images by descriptions, dates etc.
3. 12 W orking with ImageThru Opening the Samsung ImageThru window When you scan an image with Samsung ScanThru, the Samsung ImageThru window automatically opens and displays the scanned image. If you want to open the Samsung ImageThru window manually , do following this procedur e: 1.
3. 13 W orking with ImageThru Using SmarThru 3. T o open a selected image for editing from the image browse mode, double-click on the thumbnail of the desired image, or select Edit Image from the Image menu . The selected image will r eplace the thumbnails, taking the whole image area.
3. 14 W orking with ImageThru Samsung ImageThru toolbar overview In the Browse mode, the toolbar contains the following buttons: Opens the Samsung ScanThru window that is used for scanning images. For details on ScanThru, see page 3.2. Allows you to import images.
3. 15 W orking with ImageThru Using SmarThru Editing images T o enlarge or reduce the image displayed It may be useful when you need to take a closer look at some parts of the image, or see the whole image. Select a proper sub menu fr om the View menu.
3. 16 W orking with ImageThru Changing colour mode Y ou can change the image’s colour mode using the Color menu. These commands do not work with regions. They ar e always applied to the whole image. The result of the changes will be immediately shown in the pr eview area.
3. 17 W orking with ImageThru Using SmarThru Working within a region of an image Operations can be applied to a region of an image instead of the whole image. Region (also called selection) is an area of image that can be used as target for most operations (with the exception of r esizing, rotating and shearing).
3. 18 W orking with ImageThru Lets you draw a line consisting of several segments (polyline). Start clicking in the image where you want the polyline vertices to be placed. Y ou can also hold the mouse button and draw a freehand contour . T o indicate the last vertex of the polyline, click the right mouse button.
3. 19 W orking with ImageThru Using SmarThru Finding an image T o find certain images quickly , you may use the Find command. It is very useful when your image database is large. Select Find... fr om Edit menu. Moving an image to a different folder Y ou can move an image to a different folder .
3. 20 W orking with ImageThru Deleting images Select the image and press Delete key , select Remove fr om the Image menu, or simply drag the image onto the Shredder button in the Programs bar . Sending an image by mail or fax Drag these images to Fax or E-Mail button an the programs bar , or select the images and press the Pr ograms bar button.
3. 21 Copying a Scanned Image Using SmarThru Overview W ith Samsung CopyThru, you can • Quickly make copies of the scanned images. • Adjust the brightness and contrast of the resulting image. • Change the resolution and the image type used for scanning.
3. 22 2. Open the Samsung SmarThru window and select Copy . T o open Samsung SmarThru, double-click on the SmarThru icon on the desktop window . Y ou can also access SmarThru by selecting Programs from the Start menu, then select Samsung SmarThru , and SmarThru .
3. 23 Copying a Scanned Image Using SmarThru Samsung CopyThru window Image Control Image T ype Lets you select the scan mode for the image. Brightness Lets you adjust the brightness, making the resulting image lighter or darker . Contrast Lets you adjust the contrast, sharpening the image definition.
3. 24 W orking with E-mail messages Overview W ith Samsung SmarThru, you can send, receive and easily or ganise your work with E-mail messages. The system provides you with convenient tools that let you sort and find messages using a number of criteria.
3. 25 W orking with E-mail messages Using SmarThru Creating and sending E-mail messages 1. Open the Samsung DocuThru window . There are several ways to open the Samsung DocuThru window: • Double-click on the SmarThru icon on the desktop window . When the Samsung SmarThru window opens, select DocuThru .
3. 26 W orking with E-mail messages Y ou can hide or show the Cc or Bcc field with View menu. Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) field means that the message will be sent to the addresses but the persons in the To and Cc fields will not know about this fact. 4. T ype the message title in the Subject box, then type your message in the text message field.
3. 27 W orking with E-mail messages Using SmarThru Scanning a document and sending it by E-mail Y ou can scan a graphic document or photo and attach the image file to your E-mail. 1. Place your document (photo or graphic) into the document feeder of the machine .
3. 28 W orking with E-mail messages 5. After the document is scanned, the new message - Samsung MailThru window opens. Y ou will find that the scanned image file is attached in the attachment field. T ype the E-mail addresses and text message as described on page 3.
3. 29 W orking with E-mail messages Using SmarThru Reading E-mail messages The SmarThru system automatically checks for incoming mails each time the SmarThru system starts up and every 1 minute unless you change the internet gate configuration. T o access the internet gate configuration, see page 3.
3. 30 W orking with E-mail messages 2. In the Samsung DocuThru window , select Send and Receive mail or Receive mail from the T ools menu, or click icon on the tool bar . Note: Y ou can quickly access the Send and Receive mail or Receive mail command from the desktop window .
3. 31 W orking with E-mail messages Using SmarThru 4. Clicking Ye s opens the Incoming-Samsung MailThru window . 5. Incoming mails are automatically stor ed in the Incoming folder of Samsung DocuThru. T o view the new message in a separate window , double-click on the message.
3. 32 W orking with E-mail messages Finding a message Y ou can find a particular message that meets a specified criteria. 1. In the Samsung DocuThru window , select Search... from the T ools menu. If the Samsung DocuThru window is not open, see page 3.
3. 33 Using address book Using SmarThru Overview Y ou can use the address book feature in the SmarThru system to stor e and retrieve E-mail and fax addr esses. Y ou can save names and addr esses in your address book either by importing them fr om other programmes, typing them in, adding them from the messages you r eceive.
3. 34 Opening the address book 1. Open the Samsung DocuThru window and select Address Book... from the T ools menu. For information on opening the Samsung DocuThru window , see page 3.25. Y ou can also access the address book by clicking button on the toolbar in the Samsung DocuThru and the Samsung MailThru window .
3. 35 Using address book Using SmarThru Control buttons in address book configuration window Delete Deletes a selected item from the addr ess book. Edit Edits the information of a selected item. Move Moves a selected item to another folder you specify .
3. 36 Using the address book The address book can be opened in any place you ar e dealing with address information and allows you to retrieve the desir ed address. For example, when you create an E-mail message, you can access the addr ess book by clicking To , Cc , or Bcc button.
3. 37 W orking with fax messages Using SmarThru Overview Y ou can send and receive a fax, and easily organise your work with fax. The SmarThru system provides you with convenient tools: • W ith Samsung FaxThru, you can cr eate a fax message and send it by electronic fax.
3. 38 Sending a fax with Samsung FaxThru Y ou can fax the active current document, or the document made in another editor programme as an attached file. 1. Open the Samsung DocuThru window . For information on opening the Samsung DocuThru window , see page 3.
3. 39 W orking with fax messages Using SmarThru 5. Select the cover page, if you want, then click Next . Y ou can select a cover from the list by using the Browse button. For mor e information on the fax cover , see page 3.44. If you want to choose the options for sending a fax, click the Options button.
6. Enter the subject in the Subject field and your message in the Note field, then click Next . If you have already made a fax message using another editor programme, just click Next without filling in the fields.

Fax cover editor Fax cover editor is an easy-to-use tool that helps you to create a new cover page or edit the supplied cover pages for your fax message. Opening the fax cover editor 1. From the Start menu, select Programs ➝ Samsung SmarThru ➝ Fax Cover Editor .
3. 45 W orking with fax messages Using SmarThru Editing fax cover Cover page edit commands are divided on thr ee groups: drawing, formatting, and general operation. Drawing Commands Select Insert Object from the T ools menu, select the desired object and draw it.
Using nyPage Lite A OCR application This chapter tells briefly about the main features of AnyPage Lite. For more information and the step-by-step instr uctions, refer to the on-line help.
4. 1 Overview AnyPage Lite is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system. It transforms a scanned image (a picture) into a text. AnyPage Lite can start if Samsung SmarThru is installed alr eady . Before starting AnyPage Lite, you must install Samsung SmarThu first.
4. 2 T o run AnyPage Lite From the Start menu, select Programs → Samsung SmarThru → AnyPage OCR . For W indows 3.x, from Program Manager , select Samsung SmarThru → AnyPage OCR . Tips Using Samsung ScanThru, you can scan and recognize the document automatically with the help of the AnyPage Lite system.
4. 3 How to recognize a text or table 1. Scan the document and save it as one of the supported image files; BMP , PCX, DCX, JPEG, TIFF . T o improve the recognition quality , set a pr oper brightness and resolution.
4. 4 Using AnyPage Lite 4. Click button on the toolbar , then select the image file(s) in the open dialogue box. The AnyPage Lite system loads the file(s), then the image of the document(s) appears in the image window . For details on the AnyPage Lite working windows, see page 4.
4. 5 5. Y ou can rotate, invert, or clean the image, if necessary , using the menu, or the buttons on the toolbar . See page 4.12. 6. T o analyse the image, click button on the toolbar . The AnyPage Lite system analyses the open page (or the selected pages or all pages depending on the button mode.
4. 6 Using AnyPage Lite 8. When the recognition is finished, the r ecognized text(s) is displayed in the text window . 9. Y ou can check spelling by clicking button on the toolbar . The checking results dialogue box appears and allows you to change indefinitely recognized wor ds or misprinted words.
4. 7 Using AnyPage Lite 1 1. T o save the recognition results, click button on the toolbar . The AnyPage Lite system can save the recognition results in the following formats; TXT , R TF , HTML. The R TF format allows you to save not only text, but also information about the page layout, pictures and tables.
4. 8 Using AnyPage Lite 1. Click button on the toolbar and select the image file to open. The selected file image appears in the image window . If the table in the window is too small, increase the scale by right- clicking in the image window and from the pop-up menu, select Scale and the necessary value.
4. 9 Using AnyPage Lite 3. The block is a text by default. Change the block type by right-clicking inside the block, then from the pop-up menu, select Block T ype , then T able. 4. Use the following buttons on the tools toolbar to add lines in the block.
4. 10 AnyPage Lite window overview Batch window A kind of folder where scanned and recognized pages are assembled. In the Batch window , you can see the list of pages of the current batch. A page in a batch can have: •A graphic file (scanned, or saved image).
4. 11 T oolbar overview The toolbar can be divided into the following types according to the working function. Y ou can display or hide each of toolbars. Use View → T oolbars menu. The toolbars that can be seen on the scr een are marked with the check.
4. 12 Using AnyPage Lite Standard toolbar The buttons on this toolbar are used to work with image and available only when the Image window is active. Function Creates a new batch. Opens an image file or a batch. Cuts the selection and puts it on the clipboard.
4. 13 Using AnyPage Lite Using AnyPage Lite T ools toolbar The buttons on this toolbar are used to work with blocks and available only when the image window is active. Function Allows you to create blocks. Select this button and draw a block with the mouse.
4. 14 Using AnyPage Lite E d i t t oo lb ar The buttons on this toolbar are used to edit the r ecognized text shown in the text window and available only when the text window is active. Function Allows you to specify the font for the selection. Allows you to specify the font size for the selection.
4. 15 Using AnyPage Lite S m a r T hr u t oo lb ar The buttons on this toolbar allow you to run the corresponding SmarThr u service. Function Allows you to send the texts of the selected pages to Samsung MailThru (E-mail application of SmarThru).
T roubleshooting 5.
5. 1 T roubleshooting Overview If you have any problems with the operation of your machine, r efer to this section for suggested remedies. The causes listed in this section ar e probable causes only , and may not repr esent all of the possible cases which may occur under actual operating conditions.
5. 2 T roubleshooting Problem Possible cause and remedy • Paper has not been inserted correctly . Remove and reinsert the paper correctly (r efer to ‘Loading Paper ’ on page 2.2). • There is too much paper in the automatic paper feeder . Remove some of the paper from the automatic paper feeder .
5. 3 T roubleshooting Problem Possible cause and remedy • If using W indows 3.x, Print Manager may be disabled. From the Control Panel Printers menu, check the Use Print Manager box. • If using W indows 3.x, the Background Printing item in the Option menu of Print Manager may be set incorrectly .
5. 4 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Problem Black staining Possible cause and remedy • There is a paper quality pr oblem. Use only paper that meets printer specifications. • A toner cartridge fr om another printer has been installed. Always use the same toner cartridge with the same printer .
5. 5 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Scanning problems Problem Possible cause and remedy • Make sure that you load the document to be scanned into the document tray . • There may not be enough available memory to stor e the document you want to scan.
5. 6 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Problem Possible Cause and Remedy Scan error occurs. T urn the printer off and back on. If you still have the same problem, r estart your computer . Scan error occurr ed and the scanning has not been completed properly .
T roubleshooting ‘Port is disabled. Check if the port is properly connected, power is on, scanner is not busy . Then restart your computer ’ message appears on the screen. 5. 7 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Problem Possible Cause and Remedy The printer cable may be improperly connected or the power may be off.
5. 8 T roubleshooting Problem Possible Cause and Remedy Make sure that “Automatically answer for incoming calls after (rings)” or “Enable manual receiving” options ar e enabled.
5. 9 T roubleshooting OCR Problems Problem Possible Cause and Remedy • The original document is scanned with improper brightness or too low resolution. Adjust the scanning brightness to medium in your scanning application. • The original document contains wrong text language.
