Getting Started 6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informa tion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first c harge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Insert the USB cable int o the Charging Head (1). 2. Insert the USB cable int o the device’ s Charger/ Accessory Port (2).

Getting Started 10 Make it Google This screen displays if you did not sign into your Google account. The Make it Google screen allo ws you to create a new Google account. Note: If you skipped Wi-Fi setup, the Wi-Fi setup screen displays and you must connect t hrough a Wi-Fi network.

Getting Started 14 2. Under SD card , touch Unmount SD card and then touch OK . 3. Open the Memor y Card Slot cover and turn to expose the slot. 4. Gently press down on the memor y card (1), so that it pops out from the slot, and c arefully pull the card out (2) .

Getting Started 16 T roubleshooting If your device has fatal errors , hangs up, or freezes, you may need to reset the device to regain funct ionality . • If your device is frozen and unresponsi ve, press and hold the Pow er/Lock Key for 10 to 15 seconds.

19 Side Views The following items can be found on the sides of your device as illustrated. 1. Memory Card Slot : Install a memor y card for stora ge of files. 2. Pow er/Lock Key : Press and hold to turn th e device on or off. Press to lock the device or to wake the screen for unlocking.

Camera Lens : Used when taking photos or recording videos . 2. External Speakers : Used in music or video playback, notification tones, and for other sounds.
21 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwis e, instru ctions in this use r manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home s creen. 1. System Bar : The area along the top of the Home screen where you can find ic ons that show notifications, battery po wer , and connection details.

23 Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Home panel, plus four panels that extend beyond the d i splay width to pr ovide more space for adding shortcuts and widgets. Slide your finger horizontally across the screen to scrol l to the left or right side panels.

31 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Sho rtcuts display on each Home screen a t the bottom of the screen in portrait mode and along the right side of the screen in landscape mode. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center Home screen. The default Primary Shortcuts ar e: Cont acts, Email, Calendar , Internet, Settings and Apps.

35 Mini App T r ay There are shortcuts avai lable that link to apps that you might need while working in other a pps, such as Alarm, Calculator , Music Player , and so on. In some cas es, these shortcuts are actually links to the part of the app you need most and they contain a link to the actual a pp where you can use other functions.

Contacts and Accoun ts 46 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send m essages to group members. Creating a New Group Create a new group when you add or edit a contact. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts .

53 Google T alk T alk is Goo gle’ s instant messaging and audi o and video chat service. Y ou can use it to co mmunicate, in real time, with other people who also use Goog le T alk on another Android tablet or phone or on a computer . Tip : T alk requires that you have a Google account set up on your tablet.
Messaging 54 Messenger With Google Messenger , you can bring groups of friends together into a simple group co nversa tion, putting everyone on the same page.

57 Zoom • T a p the screen twice to zoom in or out. • Use two fingers, such as your index finger and thumb, to zoom out by making an inward pinch motion on the screen. T o zoom in, make an outward motion by sw eeping your fingers out. Tip : For convenient br o wsing, you can rotate the device to landscape mode.
Internet and Social Networking 58 Creating Bookmarks While browsing, bookmar k a site to quickly access it later . 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Internet . 2. Browse to a w ebsite, touch Add bookmark , enter the required information, and touc h OK .
59 Local Google Local (originally Google Places) is an a pplica tion that uses Google Maps and your location to help you find destinations, such as restaurant s, bars, hotels, attractions, A TMs, and gas stations. Y ou can also add your own locat ions.

61 Navig ation Use Google Navigation to find a destination and to get walking or driving directions. Navigation works best when Wi-Fi is enabled. For more informatio n, refer to “T urning Wi-Fi On or Off” on page 91. Note: Y ou must enable location ser vices to use Naviga tion.
Internet and Social Networking 62 Play Maga zines Google Play Magazines helps yo u subscribe to your favorite magazines so you can have them available to read on your tablet at your leisure. Play Magazines requires that you log on to your Google account.
63 Section 6: Music This section explains how to us e the music features of your device including th e Music app, the Music Player , and the Music Hub. Listening to Music Y ou can listen to music by using your device’ s built-in speakers, through a wired head set, or through a wireless Bluetooth stereo headset.

91 Section 8: Connections Y our device includes features to connect to the internet and to other dev ices by using Wi -F i, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. Wi -F i Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks.
Connections 92 Scanning and Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network When you turn on Wi-Fi, your device searches for available Wi-Fi connections, then d isplays them on screen. 1. From any screen, touch the Time in the Status Bar . The Status Details displays. 2.
93 4. T ouch the Wi-Fi Direct tab to display Available devices. 5. Enable Wi-Fi Direct (similar to Steps 1 and 2) on the device to which y ou want to connec t. 6. Once the device you want to connect to is displayed, touch on it. An Invitation to conn ect displays on the device to which you want to connect.
Connections 94 Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range w ireless communicatio ns technology for exchanging info rmation over a distance of about 30 feet. Y ou do no t need to line up the devices to send information with Bluetooth. If the devices are in range, you can exchange information betw een them, even if they are in different rooms.
