Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .

Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 19 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 20 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.

Basics 23 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause .
Basics 24 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 25 Using a split scr een Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run applications in a split screen. Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold .

Basics 40 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → General → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap Enable .

Basics 42 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . On the floating keyboard , tap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another location.

Basics 46 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 47 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 48 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .

Communication 56 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Delete the message. Keep the message for long-term storage . Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Move the message to another mailbox. Reply to all recipients or print the message. F or ward the message to others.

W eb & network 60 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .

Media 92 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
