Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 11 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot.
Getting star ted 14 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 15 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 18 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 Rotating the scr een Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation. T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion .
Basics 21 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 22 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 23 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release the it em. Basics 24 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 25 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications , tap End all .
Basics 26 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods .
Basics 27 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . T ap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another loca tion. T o switch t o the fixed keyboard , tap .

Basics 30 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Basics 31 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 32 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.

Kids mode 35 A dding or remo ving items On the Home screen, tap → → Edit cards . T ap to remo ve an item or tap Add C ard to add items . Applica tions The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een, and then selec t an application to open it.
Kids mode 36 Kids’ Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Kids’ Galler y on the Applications screen. V iewing images and playing videos Selec t an image or video . Scroll left or r ight to view the next or previous image or video .
Kids mode 37 Hair Salon 2 Use this application to style a character ’ s hair with a comb , scissors, hair dryer , or dye. Y ou can adorn the character with a hat, glasses, or a hairpin and take a picture of it. T ap the Play button on the star ting page and select a character .
Kids mode 38 Kids Planet Discov er y Use this application to learn about c ountries, cities , and countries of the world . Y ou can select a topic and a level on the starting page.
39 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 40 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts. T ap → Con tacts to display , and then select a location where contacts are sav ed.

Communication 42 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap t o edit.
Communication 43 Reading messages Mark the message as unread. Add a label to this message . Pr eview attachment. Keep this message for long-term storage . Mark the message as a reminder . Delete this message. Reply to this message. Reply to all recipients .

Communication 45 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
46 W eb & net w ork Chr ome Use this application to sear ch for information and br owse webpages . T ap Chrome on the Applications screen. W eb & network 47 Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account. T o view open tabs on other devices , tap → Other devices . Selec t a webpage t o open.
W eb & network 48 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
49 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 50 Setting a song as alarm tone T o use the curren tly-playing song as alarm tone , tap → Set as alarm tone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK . Selec t songs to include , and then tap Done .
Media 51 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap to take a photo . Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode. Open the image viewer to displa y photos. Switch between the front and r ear camera. Change the shooting mode. Set delayed-time shots.

Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.
Media 60 Deleting videos T ap → Delete , select videos by tick ing, and then tap Delete . Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select a sharing method, selec t videos by ticking, and then tap Share . Utilities 66 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.
Utilities 67 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.
