12 Safety Safety belts Three-poi nt inertia-reel safety belts are pro- vided fo r all seats. Researc h has es tablished th at it is danger- ous for rea r seat passeng ers not to wear their safe ty belts. Bear in mi nd that in c ertain sta tes it is a legal requiremen t for all occup ants of the car t o wear a safety bel t.
13 Safety Safety belt pr etensioners The belts of the front seats are fitted with automati c pretensio ners, which ar e acti- vate d in t he eve nt of a sev ere front al or rear-end c rash, provided that the safe ty belts are being worn. They serv e to reduce the forw ard movement o f the body b y ten- sioning the belt.
14 Safety • Child ren who ha ve gr own out of a child seat sh ould be rest rained by the car’ s standard three-point belt s. Make sure that the shoul der belt is not in conta c t with the nec k or throat. If it is, a booster seat/cu sh- ion ma y be necessa r y .
15 Safety Belt heig ht adj ustmen t The front safety belts and the out side belts in the re ar (9-5 Sedan) ar e equipped with automati c height adjustm ent. After faste ning the bel t, grasp it at chest height, p ull it out and, without letting go, allow the slack t o be take n up by the reel.
16 Safety Safety b elt, rear se at Three-poi nt safety belts a re provided for a l l three rear seat pas sengers. Fasten the belt by pul ling out the strap care - fully an d inserting the tongue in th e lock.
17 Safety WARNING Safety be lts are design ed to bear upo n the bony s tructure of the body , and should be worn low across the fr ont of the pelvis or the pelvis, ches t and sh oulders, as applic able; wearing the lap portion o f the belt acros s the abdom inal area must be avoide d.
18 Safety Head res traint The f ront seat s in th e Saab 9-5 ar e equippe d with Saab Ac tive Head Re straints (SAHRs). These red uce the risk of whip lash injur y if th e car is hit from behi nd. In th e even t of a r ear- end c ra sh, the body is forced ba ck against th e backrest.

21 Safety LATCH installation To facil itate the proper f itting of new s pe- cially -designed chil d restraints r igid lower anchorag es (ISOFIX) have bee n installed to the vehi cle that sh all be used w ith the top tether anchorages in the two outboa rd rear seating positions.

23 Safety Child teth er anchor ages for forw ard facing chil d car seat s Child res traints with a teth er strap must be anchored according to Canadian an d USA laws. If you h ave any que stions regard ing child tether anchorages ple ase contact y our Saab deal er.
24 Safety 9-5 Wagon: 1 Fold the bac k rest of the rear seat f or- ward , see page 132. 2 Fold the anchor that is right behi nd the child re straint to i ts upright posi tion. 3 Place the chi ld restraint in the rear seat. 4 Raise the he ad restrain t to its upper position and then route th e tether under the head res traint.
25 Safety Lockable belt tongue In fit ting a child s eat that is i ntended to be secured in positi on by the lap portion of th e safety b elt, make use of the locking function of the buckle. Lockin g the lap port ion of the be lt lessens the risk that the seat w ill work loo se while the car i s in motion.

27 Safety Integrated booster seat (access ory) The integ rated booste r seat in the back is intended for children weighing 33-8 0 lbs. (15-36 kg) and betwe en 38 and 54 in ches (97 and 1 37 c m) ta ll. When se ated in the i ntegrated boos ter seat, the chi ld must wear the standard three-point safety bel t.
28 Safety WARNING • Use only the veh icle’s lap and shoul- der belt system when restraining the child i n the booste r seat. • T he se at must not be modif ied or changed in any w ay.
29 Safety Airbag (Supplemental Restraint Syst em "SRS") The suppl ementary restrai nt system (SRS) compr ises a n airbag in the steeri ng wh eel, a front passen ger airbag and side airbags in the front seats. The sys tem suppleme nts the protec tion provided by the safety be lts to further enhance the safety of the occupant s.
30 Safety • Never rest yo ur hands or fo rearms on the steerin g-wheel center paddin g. • If the AIR BAG warning light re mains on after the car has b een started o r comes on while you are driv ing, have the car checked imme diately by an authoriz ed Saab dealer.

35 Safety Frequently asked questio ns on func- tion of airbags Do you still need to wear a safety b elt if ai r- bags are fitted? Yes, alw ays! The airba g merely suppl e- ments t he car’s norm al safety syste m.
36 Safety Are the smok e and fumes given of f when th e airbag op erates at all harmful? Most pe ople who hav e remained i n a car with li ttle or no ve ntilation for several mi n- utes co mplained only of minor irri tation of the throat an d eyes. Avoid as far as possible getting dust on your skin as there is a r isk of skin ir ritation.

38 Security Doors Door handles Pull the handl e to open th e door. If the do or is stuck (e.g . if froze n), hold the handle f rom above to secure a be tter grip. Central lock ing Key / Remote c ontrol The key uni t consis ts of a mechanic al key with int egrated remote c ontrol.

Electron ic starti ng interlo ck (immobilizer) Each t ime the key i s remo ved from the ig ni- tion, the elec tronic starting inte rlock is acti- vated an d the car is thus immo bilized, se e also pa ge 44.
40 Security Locking by key (1) When the car is lock ed and unlo cked the theft alar m is also affected. Turn the ke y clockw ise: all do ors lo cked . The trunk lid/tailgate cannot b e opened now from ins ide using t he switch on the driver’s door. Unlockin g by key (2) Turn the k ey counterclo ckwise once: th e driver´s door will unlo ck.
41 Securit y Child safety locks The rear d oors are equi pped with chi l d safety l ocks that are o perated by m e ans of a catch adjacent to the door lock. Inser t a key an d turn the c atch 45 ° cl ockwise or counter clockwise as indic ated by the label on the door.
42 Security Trunk Release Handle There is a glow-in-the-d ark trunk releas e handle l ocated insi de the trunk o n the latch. This ha ndle will glo w following exposure to light. Pul l the releas e handle down to open the trunk from the insid e. Tailgate, 9-5 Wagon The tailga te is not unlo cked when the oth er car doors a re unlocked.
43 Securit y Car alarm The ca r alar m (a nti- thef t syst em) is acti - vated/de activated wh en the car is locked /unlocked by the rem ote control or by the key , see page 39.

45 Securit y Alarm signals When the car alarm is armed, it wi ll be trig- gered if an y door, or the tr unk lid or hood, is opened o r if a wind ow is broken. The alar m will also be trig gered if an attemp t is mad e to bypass or short-circuit the igni- tion swit ch, or to disco nnect the battery .

50 Instru ments and contr ols Indicator and warning lights A number of indicator and warn ing lights wi ll come on whe n the igniti on is switched on prior to s tarting. Under norm al conditions , these sh ould go out a fe w seconds after the engine h as started (see page 56).
51 Instruments and controls Warning, charging This ligh t will come on togeth er with if the batte ry is discharg ing. If it comes on whil e you ar e dri vin g, sto p the c ar as soon as poss ible and sw itch off the engi ne. Check th e alternator drive belt (see pa ge 201).
52 Instru ments and contr ols Anti-lock b rake w arning This light will come on if a fault ha s occurred in the ABS system. On certa in variants and as well as can ligh t up to indicat e a fault in the electron ic brake force d istribution sy stem (distr ibution of the brake press ure between the front and rear wheels).
53 Instruments and controls CHECK message in dicator This li ght indica tes that ther e is a message in the SID . A chime wi ll also sound (see page 63). Central warning light This li ght will com e on and a c hime wi ll sound i f a fault has been detected in any system th at is critical to safety.

Indicator, high beam This li ght shows wh en the headl ights are on high beam (se e page 65). Indicator, rear fog light This lig ht shows when the re ar fog light is on (see page 66).
55 Instruments and controls Automatic transmi ssion, fault indicator On a c a r with a n auto matic tran smission, this w arning symbol is illumin ated if a fault has bee n detected i n the trans missio n. Switch the ignition off and on ag ain to chec k if the fa ult persists.
56 Instru ments and contr ols Autocheck ing of lights, main instrument panel The abov e warning and indicator ligh ts should come on w hen the i gnition is switched on prior to s tarting.
57 Instruments and controls Speedom eter (U.S . spe edomet er shown) The speed ometer receiv es signals from th e wheel sensors in the ABS system. If the NIGHT PANEL mode has been selecte d, the scale will be ill uminated up to 87 mph (140 km/h). The re mainder of the scale wi ll be illum inated if the speed of the car exceed s 84 mph (135 km/h).

61 Instruments and controls Turning the Alarm and Speed warning on or off 1 Select the Al arm or Speed-w arning function . 2 Press SET to turn on the function. Press CLEAR to turn off the functi on. When eithe r function is on, ALARM /SPD W resp ectiv ely will be vi sible on the displa y.

63 Instruments and controls CHECK messages When the engine is started, CHECKI N G will appear on the display f or about four s ec- onds, whi le the SID che cks are being per- formed.

66 Instru ments and contr ols Courtesy Headlight Feature A delay functi on allows the headligh ts to remain o n low beam fo r about 30 seconds after t he driver’s doo r has been clos ed.
67 Instruments and controls Instrument illumination The br ightness of the instrument illumina- tion can be varied b y means of the dimm er switc h adjacent t o the headlig ht switch. (Se e als o Nigh t pane l on page 63 ). In dayli ght or other e qually bright l ight, the instr ument and swi tch illuminat ion is auto- matical ly extingu ished.
68 Instru ments and contr ols Front fog lights The front f og lights ca n be activ ated in both dimmed headlight a nd parking l ight posi- tions. F og lights s hould on ly be used in poor visibi lity cond itions. Make sure you are familiar with the a ppli- cable provi ncial/state law reg arding the use of fog lights.
69 Instruments and controls Interior lighting The inter ior lighting consists of on e dome ligh t in t he fr ont an d one i n the back, a map-read ing light in the front, t wo reading light s in the bac k, floor courte sy lights in the front (in s ome model va riants) and door courtesy lights on all doors.
70 Instru ments and contr ols Wipers and was hers There are three inter mittent wiper positions. Moving the control stalk to the spring-l oaded position bet ween 0 and 2 will produce a sin gle sweep of the wipers. The wi pers are designe d for optima l clean- ing at all driv ing speeds .
71 Instruments and controls sensiti vity is selec ted, the wi pers mak e one sweep of the windshield for reference. The rain sensor has a daylight a nd a night time mo de. The sens or measures the amount of av ailable ligh t and automati cally selects the appropriate mode.
72 Instru ments and contr ols Automa tic climat e control (ACC) The ACC sy stem au tomat ical ly works to maintai n the desir ed temperatu re inside th e car.
73 Instruments and controls The syst em has five sensors: • Outdoor te mperature sensor . • In ter io r te mperat ure sens or . • Sun se nsor (mounted on top of the fascia). • T wo ble nded-air temp erature sen sors (mounted inside the f ront floor v ents).
74 Instru ments and contr ols Temperature control The cabin is divide d into two tem perature zones : • The driv er’ s zone . • The pass enger zone (f ront and rear seats) . The desire d temperature can be set between 58 and 82°F (15 a nd 27°C).
75 Instruments and controls Functions Pressi ng AU TO will cancel all manual settin gs. If a man ual function is selected it will be l ocked in but o ther functions will be c ontrolled autom atically. The sel ected tempera ture is alway s ma intained automa tically.

78 Instru ments and contr ols Starting in co ld weather To start wi th, the system will automatic a lly sel ect the defroste r set- ting, ma ximum hea t and low fa n speed. As the en gine warms up , air will also be distributed t hrough the floor vents a nd the fan sp eed will be i ncreased .
79 Instruments and controls Programming II It is al so possible to customize th e ACC system, e.g. to adapt to driving and weather co nditions. 88 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Radio Press the RADIO button to switch to the radio w hen another sou rce is active. Preset station buttons (1) Press on ce (release wi thin a second) to select a preset stat ion, e.g. The sma ll figure on the far right of th e dis- play is the number of t he preset but ton selec ted.
89 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Press and hold in the AS/SEARCH button for more than a secon d to initiate a search for the s ix strongest s tations. Each tim e the system f inds and sto res a sta- tion, the number on th e far right of the dis- play w i ll chan ge.
90 Saab 9- 5 Audio System Cassette pl ayer Before pla ying a tape, make sure tha t the label is secure and th at the cass ette is no t warped, otherwise the cassette can become jammed in the deck. Th e cassette player a utomaticall y senses whether t he tape is normal or metal (Type I or Type II).

97 Saab 9- 5 Audio System If for som e reason the C D selected by the preset butt on cannot be play ed, playback of the curre nt CD will co ntinue.
