12 Safety Safety belts Three-poi nt inertia-ree l safety bel ts are pro - vided fo r all sea ts. The results of st udies show that it is eq ually important to wear safe ty belts in the rea r seat a s in the front se ats.

Th ey ser ve to reduce th e forward movem ent of the body by tens ioning th e belt.

16 Safety Safety belt s, rear seat Three-poi nt safety b elts a re provided for all three rear-s eat pass engers (2 for Conv ert- ible mo dels). Fasten the bel ts by pulli ng the belt across you and inse rting the tong ue into the buckl e. Check t hat it is secur ely fast ened .

21 Safety LATCH LATCH (Lo wer Ancho rages & Top tethe rs for CHild ren) co nsists of top tether and lower anc horage bars (“ISOF IX”) for chil d restraints in the t wo outbo ard rear seats. ISOFIX are lower attac hment s located where t he sea t and back cu shions come together.
22 Safety LATCH installation To facil itate the proper f itting of n ew spe - cially -designed c hild restra ints rigid lower anchorag es (ISOFIX) hav e been i nstall ed to the vehi cle t hat shall be us ed with the top tether anchorages in the two out board rea r seating posi tions.
23 Safety Child tether anchorages, Coupé and 5-door models Child res traints with a teth er strap m ust be anchored acco rding to l aw. The belt ancho rage beam is pr ovided wi th three top tether anc horage s. Use the one that is l ocated ju st beh ind the ch ild res traint and attach the res traint as follows : 1 Open the lugg age co mpartment.

25 Safety Lockable belt tongue If fitt ing a chi ld se at that is inten ded to be secured in position by the lap portio n of the safety b elt, mak e use of t he loc king fun ction of the buckle . Lockin g the l ap port ion of the belt l essens the risk that th e seat wil l work loose w hile the car i s in mo tion.
26 Safety Integrated booster seat (access ory) Integr ated boos ter sea t is availa ble as p art of the rea r seat backr est. This ch ild res traint is desi gned for u se by children who weig h between 33 and 80 lbs. (15 and 3 6 kg) and are be tween 38 and 54 inches (970 a nd 1370 m m) in height.

28 Safety Airbag (Supplemental Restraint Syst em "SRS") The Supplem entary R estrai nt System (SRS) comprise s an airbag in the steering wheel, a front pass enger airb ag and side airbags in the front seats. The sys tem sup pleme nts the pr otecti on provided by the s afety be lts to furth er enhance the s afety of o ccupants .
29 Safety WARNING • Even if th e car is equipp ed with an SRS (airbag ), safety belts mu st st ill always be wor n by all occ upa nts . • Note that be caus e an airba g inflates and defla tes ex tremely rapidly, it wi ll not pro vide prote ction ag ainst a sec ond im pact o ccurri ng in th e sa me incident .
30 Safety Front p assenger se at The airbags are intercon nected and have a common w arning l ight, AIR BAG. The pas- senger a irbag mod ule is housed in the fascia a bove t he glove c ompartm ent and is marked ”SRS AIR BAG”.
31 Safety Side airbag s are house d inside the ba ck- rests o f the fr ont seats and ar e desi gned to protect the driver and front passenge r in th e event of a side impact.
32 Safety AIR BAG warning light SRS servici ng The SRS m ust be in spect ed as pa rt of the normal se rvice pro gram b ut otherwis e may be rega rded as m aintenanc e-free.

34 Safety Are the smok e and fumes given off wh en the airbag op erates at all ha rmful? Most pe ople wh o hav e remaine d in a car with li ttle or no venti lation for se veral min- utes co mplained only of minor irritati on of the throat and ey es. Avoid a s much a s pos- sible g etting dus t on you r skin as there is a risk of skin irritati on.

36 Security Doors Opening handle Open th e door by lifting the open ing hand le from below . If the do or is stuc k (e.g. i f frozen), h old the handle f rom ab ove to se cure a better grip. Central lock ing Key The key unit cons ists of a mechan ical ke y with int egrated r emote c ontrol.
37 Securit y To chec k the number of keys that ar e pro- grammed fo r the c ar; see pa ge 45. Electron ic startin g interloc k (immobilizer) Each t ime the ke y is re move d from th e igni - tion, the elec tronic sta rting interloc k is acti- vated an d the car is thus immobil ized, see also page 42.
38 Security Locking by key (1 ) Turn the key cl ockwi se: all do ors and trunk lid loc ked. The trunk lid can not be opened n ow from inside us ing the s witch on the dr iver’s doo r. Unlockin g by key (2 ) Turn the k ey coun terclock wise once : the driver´s doo r unlocked.
39 Securit y Changing t he key ba ttery When the battery voltage in the key fal ls below a prede termined level the SID will issue the fol lowing mes sage: REPLA CE KEY BATTERY. Press the CLEAR button on the SID to ack nowled ge this m essage. You mus t then repl ace the b attery without delay to avoid m alfun ctions.
40 Security Trunk lock The trunk does no t unloc k when th e other doors are unloc ked. The trunk butt on on the driver’s door i s inopera tive wh en the ca r is locked or mov ing at a speed greater th an 2.7 mph (4 km/h). 9-3 Con vertible: W hen unloc ked the b ootlid opens s lightly.
41 Securit y Car alarm The ca r alar m (an ti-t heft sy stem ) is act i- vated/de activate d when t he ca r is locked /unloc ked by the k ey remote or by the key in the drive r´s door. All of the doors plus the trunk li d and h ood are moni tored by m icrosw itches, and win - dow-gla ss sensors will trigger the alar m if any gla ss is broken.
42 Security Activat ing the car al arm The car a larm c annot be activate d if th e driver’s door is open or if the ig nition switch is in th e ON p osition.
43 Securit y Alarm signals When the car al arm is a rmed, i t will be trig- gered if any do or, the trun k lid or hood, i s opened, or if a window i s brok en. The alar m will al so be trigger ed if an atte mpt is mad e to bypa ss or short-circ uit the ig ni- tion swit ch, or to disconne ct the battery.

56 Converti ble Trunk, 9-3 Convertible Hooking up top stor age bag More spac e in the trunk ca n be obtain ed by lifting t he top storage bag up by the straps under it and ho oking them in the eyele ts at the top o f the b ag. The top st orage bag can only be hooked up in this way when the top i s raised .
57 Conver tible seatback for long, narrow loads A trunk pa ss-through is pro vided in the rear seat back s upport so tha t long narr ow objects can be carried . Before using this trunk pa ss-thro ugh, the rear se atbac k must be low ered. Suspend the top storage b ag by means o f the hook s as p reviou sly des cribe d on page.
58 Converti ble Use mild soap, lukew arm water an d a sponge for wa shing. Rinse th e top thorough ly wit h plain water t o get rid o f all t he soa p. Flush the cl eaning agent off the bo dywork as well , since i t can cause d iscolora tion i f it is left to d ry on t he paintw ork.

Under norm al co nditi ons, these shou ld go ou t a few se conds af ter the engine has sta rted.
61 Instruments and controls Warning charging This lig ht comes on toge ther with if the batter y is not charging. If it c omes on while you are drivi ng, stop the car as so on as pos- sible a nd swit ch off the en gine. Check th e alternato r drive belt (se e page 197).

66 Instru ments an d contr ols Instru ments Tachometer The tacho meter in dicates th e engin e speed in thousa nds of re volution s per mi nute. The needle ma y be allo wed to enter the broken red zone on the dial onl y for an instan t.
67 Instruments and controls Temperatu re gauge The tempera ture gauge sh ows the tempe r- ature of the coo lant. The needl e should be in the m iddle of the sc ale wh en the engine is at no rmal o perating t empera ture. If the need le ente rs the red z one, the warning light w ill com e on and an ala rm chime wi ll sound.

78 Instru ments an d contr ols Instrument lighting The br ightness of the instru ment lig hting can be varied by mean s of th e dimme r switc h adjacent to the headlig ht switch , the ignit ion swi tch sh all be in posit ion ON. (See also N ight pane l on page 73).
79 Instruments and controls Rear-window wiper Rear-windo w washing and wipi ng are car- ried out us ing t he same stalk sw itch as for washing and wi ping t he wind shi eld and headlight s. This stal k has two ad ditional swit ches, ON/OFF a nd . The ON position gives intermi ttent wip ing.

83 Instruments and controls The butto n is loc ated on th e clima te-control panel. An L ED in the button i s lit as l ong as heating is on. Switch off the heating as soon as the rear window is cl ear. It will go off autom atically after abou t 10 minutes.
