12 Safety Safet y belts Three-point inertia-reel safety belts are provided for all seats. The results of st udies show that it is eq ually important to wear safe ty belts in the rear seat a s in the front seats .
13 Safety Correct positi on for safety belt Conside r this: • P osition th e lap str ap snugly and low across th e hips so t hat it just touc hes the thighs . The shoul der strap m ust be as f ar in on the shoul der as possib le. • Check to ensure th at the be lt is n ot twisted or rubbin g agains t any sharp edges .
14 Safety Front safety belts Fasten th e belt by pulli ng the belt and insert- ing the tongue in the buc kle. Check tha t it is securel y f astened. Posi tion t he lap pa rt lo w acros s the hi ps. Grasp th e shoulde r belt close to th e buckle and pull the belt towa rds the sh oulder to tighten t he lap belt part.
15 Safety Adju st the be lt so t hat it i s as high up as possib le without rubb ing again s t the neck . To avoi d chafing in the case of a short person, t he guide ca n be lowere d until th e belt com es about an in ch (a few cen time- ters) fr om the th roat but s till provi des safe restraint.
16 Safety Safety belt pretensioners Sport Sedan and SportCombi: The front safety be lts are equippe d with p retension - ers and fo rce limiters. Th e prete nsioners are activa ted in the ev ent of a vi olent frontal or si de-on c rash.

19 Safety Legroom adjustme nt Lift the lev er under the fron t of the seat an d slide th e seat to the de sired position . Backrest rake angle To find the most comforta ble posi tion, turn the knob to prov ide steples s adjustme nt of the backr est. Lumbar support 3 Adjust the firmnes s of the lumbar supp ort by turning t he knob.
20 Safety Electr ically adjust able front seats 3 With the do ors closed the s eats can o nly be adjust ed when the ign ition is ON. However , there are two exc eptions: • T o facili tate ge tting in to th e car , both seats ca n be adjusted when ei ther of the front doors is ope n.
21 Safety Backrest rake angl e Adjust th e rake angle of the backrest wit h the rear l ever. Lumbar support 3 Adjust the firm ness of the lumbar sup port by turning the knob.
22 Safety When the ignition is O N, all sea t settings can be adjus ted. When the door is ope n and before the remote control has been inser ted into the ignition swi tch, all seat settings can be adjus ted fo r up to 20 minut es. The mem ory also include s the door mirror settings .
23 Safety Head rest raints Sport Sedan a nd SportCombi Head restra int, Convertible, see p age 74. The front seats are equip ped wit h Saab Active Head Rest raints (SAHRs). These are designe d to reduce the risk of ne ck injury if the car i s hit from behind.
24 Safety Child safe ty WARNIN G • Children must alw ays be s uitably restraine d in the car. • DEATH or SERIOUS INJUR Y can oc cur • Child ren 12 and under or shorter t han 150 cm (59 inches) c.
25 Safety General infor mation on child safety The sam e attentio n must be giv en to chi ld safety i n the car as is given to a dults. Childre n trav el most safely w hen pr operly restraine d. However, the ty pe o f restraint must b e app ropria te for t he siz e of t he chil d.

33 Safety The driver and passen ger front airbags are triggered by violent fr ont-end cra shes. Th ey are not a c tiva ted by minor fron t-end impacts , if the ca r overturns or by rear- a nd side-im pacts. The car i s equipp ed as st andard with a passenger ai rbag.

35 Safety WARNIN G • Even if the car is equipped wi th AIRBAGS, safety be lts must still alw ays be worn by all occu pants. • Note that because an airb ag inflates and defl ates extremely rapidly , it will not pr ovide pro tection a gainst a second impact occurring in the same incide nt.
36 Safety Front passenger seat The system is the same as that us ed on the driver’s sid e. The airbag systems ar e interco nnected and have a co mmon warning light . The pas- senger airbag m odule is housed in t he fascia a bove t he glove box and is marked "AIRBAG".
37 Safety Passenger Sensing System Vehicles with a passenge r sensing syst em have indi cator LED s on the facia. Th e indi- cators will be lit dur ing the system check when you turn the ign ition swit ch to ST or ON. When the system ch eck is co mplete , either the O N or the OFF LED, will be lit.
38 Safety Saab reco mmends that c hild rest raints be secured in a rear sea t, includ ing an i nfant ridi ng in a r ear-fa cing i nfant seat, a child riding i n a forward-faci ng child seat and an older child rid ing in a booster seat . Your vehicl e has a rear seat t hat will ac com- modate a rea r-facing chi ld restrain t.
39 Safety The pass enger se nsing sy stem is de signed to enabl e (may inflate) the right fr ont passen ger’s frontal airbag anyti me the system senses that a pe rson of adul t size is sitting properly i n the right front passenger ’s seat.
40 Safety Head protecti on The pill ar trim and head lining (not Co nverti- ble soft top ) are de signed to abso rb energy, softenin g possi ble blows to the head. After a crash , these item s must b e change d in t he seat po sitions that w ere occupi ed.
41 Safety The side-i m p act protect i on is only ac tivated on the s i de of impa ct, whil e the saf ety belt preten sioners on both sides are dep loyed.
42 Safety Inflatabl e curtains, Sport Sedan and SportCombi The inf latable c urtains, wh ich prote c t the head, ar e conce aled alon g the len gths of the headl ining (all the way fr om front to rear roof pillars). The inflat able curtains infl ate at the same time as the side airb ags in the front s eats in case of a side-on impac t.
43 Safety For optim al prot ecti on, do not s it to o clos e to the door. Bear this in mind, for example, if someon e is sle eping in the car. T he inflat- able cu rtain comes do wn from the headlin- ing and covers a la rge portion of the side windows .
44 Safety In many c rashes se vere enoug h to inflate an airbag, w indshi elds are broken by vehicl e deformati on. Additi onal wi ndshield break- age may also occur f rom the righ t front pas - senger a irbag. • Airbag s are de signed to i nflate only on ce.
45 Safety Frequently asked quest ions on function of t he airbag Do you still nee d to wea r a sa fety belt if air- bags ar e fitted? Yes, always! The airb ag syst em compo- nents me rely supplemen t the car’ s normal safety s ystem.
46 Safety low i mpact spe ed, the airbag will not nec es- sarily be triggere d. How lou d i s the infl ation? The nois e of th e inflati on is ce rtainly l oud, but it is of an ve ry short du ration and will not damage your hearing. For a short t ime after- war ds you co uld expe rien ce a buzz ing noise i n your ears.

51 Securit y Locking a car wit h dead battery The stee ring wheel loc k require s suffic ient batter y voltage to lock and unloc k. If the bat- tery vol tage drops b elow a cert ain level while the remote c ontrol is in the ignition swit ch, you wi ll not be able t o remove the remote c ontrol.
52 Security Switches on front door s The cent ral locking ca n also b e operated from ins ide the car using the button b y eac h front door handle. Lockin g the car wit h the rem ote control ren - ders these but tons inop erative.
53 Securit y The rear d oors are equippe d with child safety loc ks that are act ivated by means of a catch next to t he door latch. Inser t a screwdri ver or the traditional key (enclos ed in the remote co ntrol) and turn it 45°. When the child safe ty lock is in the locked positio n, the door can onl y be opened f rom outside the car.
54 Security Changing the key bat tery When the v oltage of the remote cont rol battery dro ps below a certain level, the Saab Informa tion Display (SID) w ill disp lay: Change t he bat tery as soon as possible to av oid malf uncti oning .
55 Securit y 3 Change the ba tter y . Fit the ne w battery so that i t is positione d in the s ame w ay as the o ld battery , with t he positiv e (+) side fa cing down . 4 Fit the two halv es of th e remote c ontrol together a nd press them toge ther until you hear se ver al click s.
56 Security Car alar m The car a larm is armed when the car is locked with the rem ote con trol. The car a l a rm will not be arm ed if yo u lock the car wi th the traditiona l key (see page 50). All the doors , the hood and the tru nk lid are monitore d by the alarm.
57 Securit y To avoid any inconveni ence, mak e sure that anyone using the car i s famili ar with how the car alarm and the locking system w ork. If the al arm has been tri pped sin ce the ca r was la.
58 Security Panic functi on The car a larm inc l udes a panic functi on. This function allows the alarm to be started manually, for example, to att ract attention . The pani c alarm can on ly be activate d while the car i s statio nary. The alarm is sil enced if the car i s driven off.

63 9-3 C onvertibl e Operat ing th e soft to p Read the "Advice on soft t op oper ation" section o n page 62 before op erating the soft top. The soft to p is operated w ith the s witch on the instr ument panel . Hold the swi tch in the desired p osition u ntil the soft top is fully folded or ra ised.
64 9-3 Co nvertibl e Opening The follow ing condi tions mus t be fulfilled for the soft top to be folded : • V ehicle speed m ust not exceed 20 mph (30 km/h). • Bat ter y voltage must e xce ed 10 V . • Outsid e temper ature must e xceed 23°F (–5°C).

74 9-3 Co nvertibl e Head rest raints The front seats are equip ped wit h Saab Active Head Rest raints (SAHRs). These are designe d to reduce the risk of ne ck injury if the car i s hit from behind. The SAHR i s a m echanical sy stem, ac tu- ated by bo dy weight.
75 9-3 C onvertibl e Safet y belt s, rear seat, Conver tible The two rear seats have three- point safety belts w ith inert ia reels. Fasten th e belt by pulli ng the belt and insert- ing the tongue in the buc kle. Check tha t it is securel y f astened.
76 9-3 Co nvertibl e Roll over Po p-up Bars The Ro llover Pop Up Bars, which are located behind each rear seat head restraint, are designed to deploy in the event of a crash or rollo ver. WARNING You ca n be sever ely inju red or ki lled in a crash i f you are not w earing your saf ety belt - ev en if yo u have airbags and Rol l- over Pop Up Bars.

82 Instru ments an d contro ls Warning and indicator lights The wa rnings an d indications that can be shown depend o n the engi ne variant and equipme nt level.
83 Instruments and controls This ligh t comes on when th e battery is not being c harged by the altern ator. If the light comes on duri ng driving, sto p as soon as possib le and switch off the engi ne. The follow ing messa ge is shown on the Saab Info rmati on Disp lay (S ID): Check th e drive belt , see page 216.
84 Instru ments an d contro ls This lig ht indicates a m alfuncti on in the fuel or igniti on system. The car m ay stil l be driven with c are but the perform ance of the engine wi ll be somew hat diminis hed (see page 154).
85 Instruments and controls The br ake system provide s Electron ic Brakeforc e Distributi on (EBD). This distrib- utes the brake pressure between the front and rear whe els, in such a way as to achiev e optimum braking performance irres pective of th e car’s l oad.
86 Instru ments an d contro ls This lig ht comes on when there is l ess than about 2.5 gallons (10 litre) of fuel left i n the tank. This li ght indic ates that the he adlights or parking lights are o n. This li ght comes o n when the syst em is engaged .
87 Instruments and controls Autochecking of l ights, ma in instrument panel The wa rning and indicato r lights s hown above s hould come on when th e ignitio n switch i s turned to ON. They should go out after abo ut 4 seconds once the engi ne has started o r after t he fault-fre e self-dia gnosis of each sy stem or functio n.
88 Instru ments an d contro ls Temperature gauge The tempera ture gauge shows the tempe r- ature of the coo lant. The needl e should be in the m iddle of the sc ale when the engine is at no rmal operating t emperature.
89 Instruments and controls If the needl e repeatedly enters th e red zone and t he engine at the same ti me loses power, bec ause the moni toring syste m is limitin g the boost pr essure, you shou ld contact a Saab dealer as soon as poss ible.
90 Instru ments an d contro ls Press the CLR button to acknowledge a SID messag e. If you acknowle dge a message but do not hing about it, the mess age will be display ed again the ne xt time yo u start the car. When the engine is switc hed off th e warn- ing/indi cator lights sti ll active are displayed, this is to remind the driv er.
91 Instruments and controls When the en gine is started, the fu nction that was s elected w hen the engine was switched off is displ ayed, w ith the followin g excepti ons: • Temp is displ ay ed if the outsid e tempera - ture is betwee n 26 and 38°F (–3 an d +3°C).

97 Instruments and controls Swit ches The park ing lights and daytime runnin g light s come on automa tically when th e igni- tion sw itch is in the ON po sition. High bea m can not be ac tivated in this posi - tion but headli ght flasher can. The park ing light s can be turned on irre- spectiv e of the position of the ign ition swit ch.
