18 P er forming Adjusting the V olume ( VOL UME) Here ’ s how to adjust the overall v olume of the GAIA SH-01’ s sound, which is output from the OUTPUT jacks on the rear panel and the PHONES jack. 20 Shifting the Keyboar d ’ s Pitch Range ( OC T A VE UP/DOWN) Y ou can shift the keyboard’ s pitch range in steps of one octave, for a maximum of thr ee octaves upward or downwar d. 1. T o raise the range, press the OCT A VE [UP/+] button, and to low er the range press the OCT A VE [DOWN/-] button.
21 Changing the Pit ch or V olume by Moving Y our Hand ( D BEAM) By moving your hand above the D BEA M controller located at the upper left of the keyboard, you can vary the pitch or volume accor ding to the height of your hand.
22 Changing the V olume to Add Expr ession ( VOL UME) 1. Press the [VOLUME] butt on so it’ s lit. 2. While playing the keyboar d, position your hand over the D beam c ontroller , then move it up and down. The volume will change, allo wing you to add expression to your performance.
23 Selec ting How the Arpeggio will Sound The GAIA SH-01 lets you choose from 64 variations of arpeggio. 1. Hold down the [CANCEL/SHIFT] button and press the [ARPEGGIO ] button. Now you can use the [BANK] button and NUMBER [1]–[8] buttons to select the arpeggio variation.
24 Recor ding O pera tions ( PHRASE RECORDER) Y ou can record y our keyboard performance and knob operations, and play them back r epeatedly . The recor ded per formance is called a “phrase. ” Y ou can record up t o eight phrases, and each phrase can be up to eight measures long .
25 Erasing Rec orded Opera tions While recording a phr ase, you can erase un wanted notes from the recor ding. 1. During recording , press the [BANK ] button. 2. 29 C y clic Change ( LFO) The OSC, FIL TER, and AMP can be modulated at a rate speci ed by the LFO (p. 36) to create vibrato (by modulating the pitch) or tremolo (by modulating the v olume). The GAIA SH-01 has three LFOs; you can use one LFO f or each tone.
30 Making the sound r e ec t the physical positions of the knobs and sliders ( M ANUAL) The Manual function changes the parameter values to match the physical positions of the knobs and sliders, allowing you to edit in a straigh tforward manner .
31 NOISE Noise This wavef orm contains all frequencies. It is suitable for percussion instrument sounds or sound e ects. SUPER SA W Super Saw This produces a tone similar to sev en sawtooth wav es heard simultaneously . Pitch-shifted sounds are added to the center sound.
32 [ PW ] slider If the [ W AVE] button (p. 30) has selected (asymmetr ical square wav e), you can use this slider to specify the width of the upper portion of the square wave (the pulse width) as a percentage of the entir e cycle. • Moving the slider downward will narro w the pulse, making it approach a square wa ve (pulse width = 50%).
33 HPF (High-Pass F ilter) This type of lter cuts the frequency range that is below the cuto frequenc y , emphasizing the high-frequency range. This can be used to creat e percussion instrument sounds with a distinctive high-frequency range.
34 [ RESONANCE] knob Resonance emphasizes the sound in the region of the lter cuto frequenc y . Increasing the resonance setting will increase this em- phasis, producing a distinctive sound that is characteristic of synthesizers. If you want t o accentuate the resonanc e e ec t, it’ s a good idea to lower the cuto slightly.
35 [ A] (A ttack time) slider This speci es the time from the moment you press the key until the cuto frequency reaches its highest (or lowest) point. Moving the slider upward will lengthen this time , and moving it downwar d will shorten the time.
36 [ D] (Decay time) slider This speci es the time from when the maximum volume is reached, until it deca ys to the sustain level. Moving the slider upward will lengthen this time , and moving it downwar d will shorten the time.
37 [ TEMPO SYNC] button This button lets you specify the LFO speed as a note v alue relative to the arpegg io or phrase recorder tempo . If you press the [ TEMPO SYNC] button so it’ s lit, and then turn the [RA TE] knob, the LFO speed (cycle) will change in steps of note lengths “RA TE” (p.
38 Adding P ower , Spaciousness, and Rev erb (EFFEC T S) “E ec ts” allow you to modify or enhance the sound in various ways, such as b y adding reverberation or delaying the sound.
39 [ TEMPO SYNC] button This button synchronizes the dela y time to the GAIA SH-01’ s tempo, allo wing you to easily create e ect sounds that are synchronized t o the tempo of your song. Reverb This e ect adds the reverberation that is characteristic of a performance in a large hall.

41 Elimina ting Sound from the C enter ( CENTER C ANCEL) By using this function, sounds that are localized at the center (such as vocals) can be eliminat ed from the sound of the device connected to the EXT IN jack.
