5 PREP A RA TI ON CONNECTING POWER You can power your transc ei ver f rom any of three sources : • Inter nal batt eries ( not s upplied) • V ehicle b attery p ower (us ing an opt ional DC cig- are.

7 • If yo u do not pl an to us e batteri es in th e trans - ceiver for a month or more, remove t he bat - teri es. This pr otects t he tran sceiver f rom possib le battery l eaka ge. 6. Replace the cover . When BATT (b att ery low) ap pears on t he di splay, r e- place or r echarge the batt eries.

9 Follo w these steps to power the transcei ver from AC power. 1. Using the double-si ded foam tape sup plied wit h the ci garette lighter accesso ry out let, mount the accessor y out let to the DC power supply . 2. I nsert t he power c ord’ s b arrel pl ug int o th e trans - ceiver’ s DC13 .
10 CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BA TTERIES The tra nsceive r has a built-in ci rcuit th at lets you re- charg e nickel -ca dmium batte ries whi le they ar e in th e tra nsceive r. To charge the bat teries, connect a DC power cord t o the tr ansceiv er’s DC13.
11 CONNECTING AN ANTEN NA Your tr ansceiver c omes with a f lexibl e rubber ante n- na that i s ideal for mos t applicat ions. However , the transc eiver’s BN C ante nna connect or makes i t easy to connec t other ty pes of ant ennas. Your l ocal Radio Shack sto re sells a wide v ariety of antennas .
12 USING AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER In a nois y area, an ext er nal spea ker (such as Cat. No. 21-549 ) posi tioned i n the righ t plac e might prov ide more c omforta ble lis tening . P lug th e speaker cable’s 1 / 8 -inc h (3.5 mm) min i- plug into the trans ceiver ’s SPK jack .
13 USING THE WRIST STR AP You can use t he suppli ed wrist s trap to keep t he transc eiver acces sible . Hook the strap ’s connec ting ring to the t ab, as shown. Then si m ply slip t he strap over y our ha nd. USING THE BEL T CLIP Use the s uppli ed belt cl ip to make t he tra nsceiver easier to take with yo u.

17 LOCKING THE FUNCTION S Use the KEY LOCK switch to l ock the tr ansceiv er’s funct ions (exc ept t he talk butto n and LIGH T ) to pr e- vent a ccident al progr am changes . Press KEY L OCK so appear s on the displ ay. To rel ease th e lock , press KEY LOCK again.
