11 C ONNECTING AN A NTENNA Connecting a Supplied Antenna You mus t install an antenna befor e you can operate the scanne r. The su ppl ie d st ub ant enna h elps your sc anner receiv e most s trong tran smissi ons at even ts and makes the scan ner easier to carry and use .
12 • The a ntenna an d its cab le should be as far as pos sible from sour ce s of elec tri cal noise, suc h as app lia nces or other radios. • The a ntenna sh ould be vertical fo r the best perf orman ce. Always use 50 Ohm co axial cab le, such as RG-58 or RG-8, to connec t the base-st ation or mobi le ante nna.

16 SCAN — Scans any programmed channe ls (ch annel display mode only), o r lets you direc tly enter a channe l number. SRCH / PAUSE — Le ts yo u sea rch the sev en search bank s, or pauses search or tune o peration. WX / ALERT — Scans the scanne r’s preprogramme d weathe r channels, o r turns the WX alert mo de on and off.

18 Service Banks The sc anne r is pre prog ramm ed with th e frequencie s alloca ted by car, marine, FRS/GMRS/MURS, police /fire, aircraft, and ham ra dio band s. This i s handy for q uickly finding active frequ encies instead of searc hing through an entire band ( see “Sear chi ng a Preprogr ammed F requency Range” on Page 40 ).

34 I NITIALIZING THE S CANNER If you wan t to clear all the scanne r’s memory, initiali ze the scanne r. ! 1. Press an d hold FUNC for about 2 seconds. 2. Press 8 , 5 , and then ENT . Do not turn off the scan ner until th e initializa tion is compl ete.

36 Power Save Circuit Your scanne r features a pow er save c ircuit that is a utomaticall y activa ted any time you manually select a channel o r car number frequenc y. The power s ave mode works by allowi ng the receiv er to "sleep " briefly w hile wai ting for a call o n the se lect ed chan nel.
37 There are two ways yo u can program your scanner to operate with CTCSS. If y o u know the CTCSS code that is used on a particul ar frequency, you can manual ly e nter t he c ode wh en you are pr ogr am ming the sc anner , or any tim e afterwards.
38 T URNING O N OR O FF THE CTCSS 1. Select th e channel or the car number f requency . 2. Press FUNC th en 4/CTCSS . The sca nner turns on or of f the CTCSS in the selec ted channe l (or the car numb er freq uenc y). Finding the Quiet Code on a Frequency 1.
