Installation 17 • Secure the card’s metal bracket to the computer following the directio ns pro- vided in your PC ’s manual and replace the computer cover. • Plug the computer ’s power cord back into t he wall outlet . • Attach the cabled antenna to the antenna base and plac e it on top of your desk, computer , or monitor.
Installation 18 Wi nd o w s N T Follow these steps to install a Harmony 802.11 a network a dapter in a computer running Windows NT 4.0 (Ser vice Pac k 6 or later). 1. T urn on the computer and l ogon to Windows, if a pplicab le. 2. Inser t the Ha rmony Ins tallation CD into the computer’s CD-ROM drive.

C onfiguration Par ameters 28 802.11a Software P arameters The follow ing configuration parameters are availab le for a Harmony 802.11a network adapter . Refer to Chapter 5 for instructio ns on how to chang e th ese configuration settings using the Harmony Utili ty.
C onfiguration Par ameters 29 P ower Saving Mode The Harmony 802.11a network adapters support opt ional power manage ment to conserve battery life. Power Saving Mode is only available if the adapter is o perating in Infrastructure mode. When Power Saving Mode is s et to Normal o r Maximum, a Harmony 802.
C onfiguration Par ameters 30 Channel 802.11a device s spread a radio signal over a range of fre quencies. The IEEE 802.11a specification allocates the available frequencies in the 5 GH z band into a seri es of operating Channels th at are identified by a Chann el number and a c enter carrier frequency .
C onfiguration Par ameters 31 F or Singapor e: An 802.11a network adapter can use one of four Channels: Channel 36 ( 5.18 GHz) , Channel 40 ( 5.20 GHz), Channel 44 (5.
C onfiguration Par ameters 32 RTS/CTS The 802.11a standard support s optional RTS /CTS communication based on pack et size. By default , RTS/CTS communicat ion is disabled. Without RT S/CTS, a sending radio listen s to see if another radio i s already using the medium before transmitting a data pac ket.
C onfiguration Par ameters 33 WEP Keys An 802.11a device with WEP enabled uses a WEP Key to encry pt and decr ypt information. A user must manually enter the net work’s WEP Keys on eac h 802.11a devic e. If the WEP Keys do not matc h on two r adios, no data c ommunication wil l take plac e be tween these devices.

Harmo ny Util ity 42 Security C lick the Security tab to configure the adapter’s secur ity setti ngs. From with in this screen, you can enable WEP for Authenticatio n and Encry ption, enable the Harmo ny Security Protocol, and configure the adap ter’s WEP K eys.
Harmo ny Util ity 43 4. Enter one to four WEP Keys in the fields pr o vided, as shown i n the following exampl e. 5. Use only hexadecimal digits (i.e. , 0-9 and A-F ). For 64-bit encr yption, enter 10 digits for eac h Key; for 128-bit encr yption, enter 26 digits for eac h Key; for 152-bit encr yption, e nter 32 dig its for each K ey .
Harmo ny Util ity 44 In the following example, Key 3 is t he Default Key . A Harmony 802.11a networ k adapter can decrypt i nforma tio n that was encrypted with any of it s four WEP Key s but it will only use the D efault K ey to encr ypt outgoing i nformation.
