7 Chapter 2: Inst allatio n To insta ll Promise Array M anagement (PAM ) is an uncompli cated proc edure, once y ou understand y our systems and how y ou want to use PA M . The purpose of this Cha pter is to help y ou plan and carry out yo ur installati on of PAM.

Chapter 2: Inst allation 9 Messag e Server The M essage Server inst alls onto the RAID PC if y our insta llation doe s not involve a n etwork. If you w ant run PAM over a ne twork, inst all the Messa ge Serv er on one of your networked computers i ncluding a fi le server, a networked P C or the RAID PC.
Promise A rray Management 10 Network Requirements If you pl an to insta ll PAM on a network be sure all the hosts and s ervers are connect ed and runni ng. That i s, each of the PCs, RAID s and Serv ers must have a working n etwork co nnection before y ou insta ll PAM.

Chapter 3: Init ial Setup 17 Remote PAM Log-in You must create a RAID S erver in order t o use Remote PA M. The R AID Server in PAM communicates w ith the M essage Server on t he network to connect y our PC w ith the other PCs runn ing FastTrak. Launch Re mote PAM as described above.

Chapter 3: Init ial Setup 21 Create a New User The Admin istrator is created b y default. Y ou must creat e addition al users manually . To create a new User: 1. Right-c lick on th e User M anagement icon and se lect New > U s er from the popup menu (below ).

Promise A rray Management 30 Tree View Local PA M The M onitor window is th e user interf ace for PAM. It ha s three v iews: Tr ee View, Object V iew and Inform ation View which w ere introdu ced in Chapter 3. The T ree View displays all of t he elements of your RAID sy stem.

Promise A rray Management 32 Tree Vi ew and Component Specific Menus In PAM , like most W indow s applicati ons, you can a ccess th e various co mmands and funct ions by op ening drop down menus an d clicki ng on ic ons. Each ti me you click on a compo nent in Tree View, PAM ’s menu bar al so displays that compone nt’s dropdow n menu.
Chapter 4: User I nterface 33 Information V i ew Informati on View, like Ob ject View , changes its content dep ending on w hich item you sel ect in Tree Vi ew. The differe nce is that you use Infor mation View to obtain da ta, input se ttings and information.

Dynamic Menus By the ter m Dynamic M enus, we refer to m enus appear only w hen a certain ite m is sele cted in Tr ee View.

Chapter 4: User I nterface 37 Preferen ce Menu The Preferen ce menu al lows you to start PAM automat ically when your PC boots. C heck to enable or uncheck to dis able this f eature. If you are using PAM for rem ote monitor i ng, runn ing PAM automatically is a good idea .
Promise A rray Management 38 Toolbar The T oolbar is a seri es of butt ons that are shortcuts to perf orming sp ecific ta sks. You w ill never see all buttons active as in the example below . Figure 36. The Toolbar. They become active w hen you click on spe cific sy stem comp onents in T ree View.
Chapter 4: User I nterface 39 Popup Menus In additi on to the co mmands in the dr opdow n menus, there is a corr esponding set of co mmands y ou can acc ess via po pup menus. In a popup menu, you ca n use any of the comman ds that are in black. Y ou will notice th at some funct ions are grayed out, mean ing that you cannot u s e them .

Right-c lick on a RAID Server icon and select Delet e from the p opup menu.

Promise A rray Management 60 PCI Bus Utilization On High setting, Fa stTrak hol ds onto the PCI bus longer for data transfers to occur. On Low setting, Fa stTrak re leases the PCI bu s sooner for other PCI devi ces to use. Normally , no adjust ment is req uired.

E xpansion means ad ding disk driv es to an ex isting array . Conversi on means changing an existing ar ray from one R AID level to another.

Promise A rray Management 80 Error Handling This feat ure deals w ith a bad s ector on a disk drive that th e FastTrak C ontroller encounter s during a Re build. T he options are: Fix if possib le – The Contro ller attempt s to repair the d isk error.

The arr ay cannot r ead or write da ta. All of the data on th e array w ill be lost unl ess the fail ed drive is r estored to op eration.

83 A p pe ndix A : R AID Concept s RAID is a n acronym t hat stand s for Redundant Arr ay of Inde pendent Disk s. It is divided into differe nt numbere d Levels. The nu mbers of th ese Level s do not mean that one Level is higher or bett er than anoth er.

95 A p pe ndix C: Netw orking Issues IP Address In order for PAM to be conf igured ov er a network, y ou must know the IP (network) addr ess of ev ery compon ent. The Messa ge Server use s IP addresses to comm unicate w ith the Message Ag ent on the RA ID PCs and the M onitoring Utility on the network PC s.
