Chapter 7: Technology Background 347 RAID Level Migration The term “Migration” means either or both of the following : • Change the RAID level of a logical drive. • Expand the storage capacity of a logical drive. On VT rak, RAID level migration is perform ed on the disk a rray but it ap plies to the logical drives.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 348 RAID 0 A RAID 0 source logical drive can migrate to the following target logical drives: T arget Requirements RAID 0 Add physical drives. RAID 1 2 physical drives only . Only a single-drive RAID 0 can migrate to RAID 1 by ad ding 1 physical drive.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 349 RAID 1 A RAID 1 Source logical drive can migrat e to the following T arget l ogical drives: RAID 1E A RAID 1E Source logical drive can migrate to the following T arget logical drives: T arget Requirements RAID 0 None .
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 350 RAID 5 A RAID 5 Source logical drive can migrat e to the following T arget l ogical drives: RAID 6 A RAID 6 Source logical drive can migrat e to the following T arget l ogical drives: T arget Requirements RAID 0 None .
Chapter 7: Technology Background 351 RAID 10 A RAID 10 Source logical drive can migrate to the following T arget logical drives: When you migrate RAID 10 logical driv e, it becomes RAID 1E by default. If you want a RAID 10 logical drive, there mu st be an even number of physical drives and you must specify RAID 10 for the target logical drive.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 352 RAID 50 A RAID 50 Source logical drive can migrate to the following T arget logical drives: Y ou can add physical drives to a RAID 50 array but you cannot change the number of axles.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 353 Str i p e S i z e S tripe Si ze, also called “S tripe Block Size,” refers to the size of the data blocks written to, and read from, the physical drives . S tripe Size is specified when you create a logical drive.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 354 Initialization Initialization is done to logical drives afte r they are cre ated from a disk array . Full initialization sets all data bits in the logical drive to a specified pattern, such as all zeros.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 355 Spare Drives S pare drive technology includes: • Definition (page 355) • Options (page 355) • Requirements (page 355) • T ransition (page 356) Definition A spare drive is a physical drive that you designate to automatically replace the failed physical drive in a disk array .
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 356 A revertible spare drive requires: • Y ou to replace the failed physi cal drive in the disk array • Y ou to run the Transition function T ransition T ransition is .
Chapter 7: Technology Background 357 Example Following is an example to ex plain the T ransition function. In the example above, there is a four-drive RAID 5 disk array and a global spare drive. Physical drives 1, 2, 3, and 4 be long to the disk array .
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 358 drive. In this example, physical drive 3 failed and the array is rebuilt us ing physical drive 6, the reve rtible spare drive. When the rebuild is complete, the spare driv e has replaced the failed drive. In this example, failed drive 3 was replaced by spare drive 6.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 359 Automatic T r ansition At this juncture, you would replace the fa iled drive in slot 3 with a new one of the same or greater capacity .
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 360 When the Manual Transition is finished, physical drives 1, 2, 4, and 5 belong to the disk array and physical drive 6 is a revertible spare drive. At this point, you w ould replace the drive in slot 3. The new drive i n slot 3 remains unconfigured until you assign it to a d isk array or as a spare.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 361 RAID Controllers RAID controller technology includes; • LUN Affinity (page 361) • ALUA (page 361) • Cache Policy (page 362) • Preferred Controller ID (page.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 362 Cache Policy As it is used with VT rak, the term cache re fers to any of several kinds of hig h- speed, volatile memory that hold data mo ving from your computer to the physical drives or vice-versa. Cache is important because it can read and write data much faster than a physical drive.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 363 The Forced Read-Ahead cache policy settin g provides predictive pre-fetching of data requests, allowing the controller to a ggressively buffer large chunks of data in cache memory to prevent frame drops on high-bandwidth video playback.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 364 Preferred Controller ID See “Preferred Controller ID” on page 353. Power Saving Power saving is a meth od of conserving energy by applying specific actions to hard disk drives (HDD).
Chapter 7: Technology Background 365 replacement drive that is slightly smaller (within 1 gigabyte) than the remain ing working drive. For example, the remain ing worki ng drives can be 80.5 GB and the replacement drive can be 80.3 , sinc e all are rounded dow n to 80 GB.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 366 iSCSI Management iSCSI management uses the following terms: • Basic iSCSI (page 366) • iSCSI on a VLAN (page 368) • Initiator (page 369) • T arget (page 370) .
Chapter 7: Technology Background 367 See “Adding an iSCSI Initiator” on page 178 or page 278. For more information, see: • “Managing iSCSI Connections” on page 188 or page 257 • “iSCSI Management” on page 366 • Visit the Promise Knowledgebase at http://kb.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 368 iSCSI on a VLAN VT rak supports up to 32 iSCSI portals per iSCSI port. Each iSCSI portal can belong to a different VLAN for a maximum of 32 VLANs. See the diagram on page 335, Figure 2. T o set up the VT rak subsystem for a VLAN: 1.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 369 Figure 10. iSCSI VLAN ma p Initiator An initiator functions as the client, in this case, your host PC or server . The initiator makes requests to and receives responses from an iSCSI target on the VT rak RAID subsystem.
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 370 Each initiator has a u nique iSCSI qualified name (IQN). Y ou specify the initiator by that name when you map a LUN or logical drive to the ini tiator . Initia tors come in two varieties, software and hardware. Sof tware A software initiator uses code to implement iSCSI.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 371 CHAPs Challenge Handshake Authenti cation Pr otocol (CHAP) is an authentication mechanism used to auth enticate iSCSI se ssions betwee n initiators and targets. A uni-directional or peer CHAP authentic ates fro m the target (VT rak) to the initiator (host PC or server ).
VTrak E-Class Product Manual 372 T runk A trunk is an aggregation of two or more iSCSI ports on the same RAID controller . Also known as a link aggregation . This feature combines por ts to increase bandwidth. Ports must be enabled to add them to a trunk.
Chapter 7: Technology Background 373 A uni -directional or pe er CHAP authenticates from the target (VTrak) to the initiator (host PC or server ). A bi -directional or local CHAP authenticates target to initiator and initiator to target .
