English- 16 CONTROLS Controls This operator’s manual describes the Poulan Zero T urn Rider . The rider is fitted with a Briggs and S tratton four-stroke engine developing 22 horse power . T ransmission fr om the engine is made via two belt-driven hydrost at transaxles, one for each drive wheel.
English- 17 CONTROLS 1. Motion Control Levers The machine’ s speed and direction are continuou sly variable using the two st e ering controls. The steering controls can be moved forward or backward about a neutra l position. Furthermore, there is a neutral position, which is locked if the steering controls are moved outward.
English- 18 CONTROLS 2. Seat adjustment knobs The seat can be adjusted lengthwa ys. When making adjustment s, loosen the four knobs under the seat pan, af ter which the seat can be moved backward or forward . Do not forget to tighten the knobs. 3. Fuses The fuses are located in th e right front corner of the engine comp artment.
English- 19 CONTROLS 4. By p ass linkages When pushing or pulli ng the mower , be sure to engage the EZT (Integrade d Zeroturn T ransaxle) bypass linkages. The EZT bypass linkages are locate d on the rear of the frame, below the rear engin e guard. • Raise the deck into the highest cutting position.
English- 20 CONTROLS 5. Refueling Read the Safety Instruct ions befo re refueling. The machine has one fuel t ank, just behind the seat. T he tank capacity is 3 gallo ns (1 1.4 liters ). The engine will run on a minimum of 85-oct ane unleaded gasoline (no oil mix) .
English- 21 CONTROLS 7. Ignition Switch The ignition key is placed on the driver’s panel and is used to st art and stop the engine. 8. Choke Control The choke mode is use d for cold starts in order to provide the engine with a richer fuel mixture. For cold start s the co ntrol should be pulled out.
English- 22 CONTROLS 10. Hour Meter The hour meter displays the tot al operating time. It will flash CHG OIL (Change Oil) at 50 hour intervals. The flash duration is on e hour before and one hour af ter the interval. The CHG OIL icon will come on and shut off automatically .
English- 23 CONTROLS 12. Cutting height pedal The deck cutting height is ob tained by pressing the foot p edal forward to lift the deck. T o lower the deck, you apply pres sure to the top side of the foot pedal and allow it to pivot while allowing the lif t arm to rotate to the rear of the unit.
English- 24 OPERATION Operation Read "Safety Instructions" se ction, the "Controls" section and followi ng pages, if you ar e unfamiliar with the machine. Conduct daily maintenan ce before star ting. T raining Zero turn mowers are fa r more maneuverable than typi cal riding mowers due to their unique steering capabilities.
English- 25 OPERATION Before S t arting • Read the sections Safety Instructions and Contro ls before starting the machine. • Perform the daily mainten ance before starting (se e Maintenance Schedule in the Maintenance sectio n). • Check that there is suf ficient fuel in the fuel tank.
English- 26 OPERATION 4. Disengage the mowe r blades by depressing the bla de switch. 5. Move the steering contr ols outward to the locked (outer) neutral position. 6. Move the throttle to the middle position. 7. If the engine is cold, pull out the choke control to engage choke.
English- 27 OPERATION 8. Press in and turn t he ignition key to the start position. 9. When the engine st arts, immediately release the ignition key back to the run position 10. Set the desired engine speed with th e throttle. Allow the engine to run at a modera te speed, ”half throttle” , for 3-5 minutes before loading it too heavily .
English- 28 OPERATION T o start an engine with a weak battery If your battery is too we ak to start the engine , it should be recharged. (See "Battery" in the Maintenance Section.
English- 29 OPERATION Running 1. Release the p arking bra ke by moving the lever downward. Y our mower is equipped with an operator presence sy stem. When the engine is running, any at tempt by the oper ator to leave the seat without first setting the parking brake will shut of f the engine.
English- 30 OPERATION T urning on th e spot can be achieved by moving one control ba ckward (beh ind the neutral position) and carefully moving the other steering control forwar d from its neutral position. Operating on hills Read the Safety Instructions "Slope Operation" in the "Safety Instructions".
English- 31 OPERATION Mowing Tip s • Observe and flag rocks and other fixed objects to avoid collisions. • Begin with a high cutting height and reduce it until the desired mowing result is attained. The average lawn should be cut to 2 1/2" (64 mm) during the cool season an d over 3" (76 mm) during th e hot months.
English- 32 OPERATION Stopping the Engine Allow the engine to idle a minute in order to attain normal operating tempe rature before stopping it, if it has been worked hard. A void idling the engine for longe r periods, as there is a risk of the spark plugs fouling.

English- 35 MAINTENANCE 1) First change after 5-8 hours. Whe n operating with a heavy load or at high ambi ent temperatures, replace every 50 hours. 2) In dust y conditions, cleaning and replacement are requir ed more often. 3) For da ily use, the machine should be lubricated twice weekl y .
English- 36 MAINTENANCE Battery Y our mower is equipped with a maintenan ce free battery and does not ne ed servicing. However , periodic chargi ng of the battery with an automotive type battery charger will extend it s life. • Keep battery and terminals clean.
English- 37 MAINTENANCE Ignition Syste m The engine is equipped with an el ectronic ignition system. Only the spar k plug requires maintenance. For recommended sp ark plug, see T echnical Data. 1. Remove the ignition cable boot an d clean around the sp ark plug.
English- 38 MAINTENANCE Checking the Safety System The machine is equipped with a safety system that pr events starting or driving u nder the following conditions. The engine can only be st arted when: 1. The mower de ck is disengaged. 2. The steering controls are in the outer , locked neutral position.
English- 39 MAINTENANCE Checking the Engine's Cooling Air Int ake Check that the engine’ s cooling air int ake is free from leaves, g rass, and dirt. If the cooling air inta ke is clogged, engine cooling deteriorates, which can lea d to engine damage.
English- 40 MAINTENANCE Replacing the Air Filter If the engine seems weak or runs unevenly , the air filter ma y be clo gged. If run with a dirty air filter , the spark plug can become fou led. For this reason, it is importan t to replace the air filter regularly (see th e heading Maintenance Schedule for the prope r service interval).
English- 41 MAINTENANCE Replacing the Fuel Filter Replace the line-moun ted fuel filter every 100 hours (once per seaso n) or more regularly if it is clogged. Replace the filter as follows: 1. Move the hose clamp s away from the filter . Use flat-nosed pliers.
English- 42 MAINTENANCE Checking the V -belts Deck belt V -belts are not adjust able. Replace belt s if they begin to slip from wear . Deck belt removal • Park on a level surface.
English- 43 MAINTENANCE Deck belt inst allation NOTE: For ease in installing the deck belt, refer to the routing decal on bottom of seat. • Wrap the deck belt around the electric clutch pulley that is located on the engine shaft. • Route the belt forwar d between the EZT (E-Series Zerotu rn T ransaxles) and up onto the deck.

English- 45 MAINTENANCE Checking the Blades In order to attain the best mowing effect, it is important that th e blades are well sharpen ed and not damaged . Bent or cra cked blades or blades w ith large nicks should be re placed. Damaged blades should be replaced when hitting obstacles that result in a brea kdown.
English- 46 MAINTENANCE • Install new o r re-sharpened blade with stamped "GRASS SIDE" facing towards ground/grass (down) or “THIS SIDE UP” facing deck and cutte r housing. • Install and tigh ten blade bolt securely . T orque blade bolt to 45-5 5 ft/lb (61-75 N m).
English- 47 MAINTENANCE T o level deck Adjust the deck while the mower is on a level surface. Make sure th e tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Se e “T echnical Da ta” under T ransmission. If tires are under or over inflated, you can not prop erly adjust your deck.
English- 48 MAINTENANCE Front-to-back adjustment T o obt ain the best cutting performance, the deck should be adjusted so the front tip of the blades are appr oximately 1/8" (3.2 mm) to 1/4" (6.5 mm) lower than the rear tip. If the front tip is higher , this will create a poor quality of cut.
English- 49 MAINTENANCE T o adjust anti-scalp rollers Deck has anti-scalp rollers. Anti-scalp rollers are properly adj usted when they are just slightly off of the ground when the deck is at the desired cutting height in th e operating position.
English- 50 MAINTENANCE Cleaning and W ashing Regular cleaning and washing , especially under the mower de ck, will increase the machine’ s lifespan. Make it a habit to clean the machine directly after each use ( after it is cooled), before the dirt sticks.
English- 51 LUBRICATION Lubrication Lubrication Schedule General Remove the ignition key to preven t unintentional movement s during lubrication. When lubricating with an oil can, it must be filled with engine oil. When lubricating with grease, unless otherwise st ated, use a high grade molybden um disulfide grease.
English- 52 LUBRICATION Lubricating the Cables If possible, grease both end s of the cables and move the controls to en d stop pos itions when lubricating. Refit the rubber covers on the cables af ter lubrication. Cables with sheaths wil l bind if they are n ot lubricated regularly .
English- 53 LUBRICATION 1. Place the machine on a flat surface. 2. Remove the yellow cap and fit a hose to the drain valve. 3. Place a container un der the engi ne where the hose from the oil drain valve exits. 4. Remove the dipstick and open the drain valve by turning and pulling out the black sleeve.
English- 54 LUBRICATION Checking the oil level Check the oil level in the engine when the machine is s tanding level and th e engine is stopped. Remove the dip stick, wipe it clean, and then replace it . The dipstick should be screwe d into place. T ake the dip stick out again and read the oil level.
English- 55 LUBRICATION 6. Check the oil level in the engine, fill if necessary . The oil filter holds 0.1 liters of oil. T ransmission The transmission is ma intenance free. There is no need for level chec ks or oil chan ges. If a leak occurs, replace the unit or contact your Poulan dealer .
