Chapter 1 13 Using the keyboard The keyboard has full-sized keys and an embedd ed keypad, separate cursor keys, two Windows keys and twelve function keys. Lock keys and embedded numeric keyp ad The keyboard has three lock keys which yo u can toggle on and off.
14 T ravelMate 4060 Hot Keys The computer employs hot keys or key combinations to access most of the computer ’s controls like screen contrast and brightness, volu me output and the BIOS Utility . T o activate hot keys, press and hold th e <Fn> key before pressing the other key in the hot key combination.

Chapter 1 17 T ouchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor responds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The cen tral location on the palmrest provides optimum comfort and suuport.

Chapter 2 28 BIOS Setup Utility The BIOS Setup Utility is a hardware configuration prog ram built into y our computer ’s BIOS (Basic Input/ Output System). Y our computer is already properly configu red and optimi zed, and you do not need to run this utility .
29 Chapter 2 Navigating the BIOS Utility There are six menu options: Info., Main, Sy stem Devices, Security , Boot, and Exit. Follow these instructio ns: T T o choose a menu, use the cursor left/right keys ( zx ). T T o choose a parameter , use the cursor up/down keys ( wy ).
Chapter 2 30 Information NOTE: The system information is su bject to diff erent models. Parameter Description HDD Model Name T his field shows the model name of HDD installed on primary IDE master . HDD Serial Number This field displays the seri al number of HDD installed on primary IDE master .
31 Chapter 2 UUID Number This will be visible only when ther e is an int ernal LAN device present. UUID means Universally Unique ID, a method for computing ob ject identifiers (OIDs). It uses the serial number in the local Ethernet card combined with the date and tim e to generate a 128 bit (16bytes) number .

Chapter 3 54 IMPORT ANT : When assemb ling/disassembling the main board, whenever there is a mylar on the main board (see the highlighted with red below; the mylar is sa mi-transparent, film-like stuff ), it should be transferred “if necessary” to the replacement main board.
55 Chapter 3 Disassembling the LCD Module 1. Remove the four screw caps as shown. 2. Remove the four screws holding the LCD bezel. 3. Then detach the LCD bezel from the LCD module. 4. Disconnect the inverter board then remove it. 5. Remove the three screws holding the right hinge.

57 Chapter 3 Disassembling the External Modules Disassembling the HDD Module 1. Remove the two screws holding the HDD bracket on one side. 2. Remove another two screws holding th e HDD bracket on the other side. 3. Then take the hard disc drive out from the HDD bracket.

59 Chapter 4 System Check Procedures External Diskette Drive Check Do the following to isolate the problem to a controller, dr iver , or diskette. A write-ena bled, diagnostic diskette is required. NOTE: Make sure that the diskette does not have more than on e label attached to it.

Chapter 4 74 Intermittent Problems Intermittent system hang problems can be caused by a variety of reasons th at have nothing to do with a hardware defect, such as: cosmic radiation, electros tatic discharge, or software errors. FRU replacement should be considered only when a recurring prob lem exists.
75 Chapter 4 Undetermined Problems The diagnostic proble ms does not identify wh ich adapter or device failed, which in stalled devices are incorrect, whether a short circuit is suspected, or whether the system is inoperative. Follow these procedure s to isolate the fail i ng FRU (do not isolate non-defective FRU).
