2 I NSTALLING THE S WITCH This chapter contains the informat ion you need to install and set up the Switch 4200G. It covers the following topics: ■ Package Contents ■ Choosing a Suitable Site ■ .
22 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH A VVERTENZA: Informazioni di sicurezza. Prima di installare o rimuovere qualsiasi componente dal Sw itch 4200G o di eseguire qualsiasi procedura di manutenzione, leg gere le informazion i di sicurezza riportate nell'Appendice A della pres ente guida per l'utente.
Rack-mount ing 23 ■ W ater or moisture cannot enter the case of the Sw itch. ■ Air flow is not restricted around the Switch or through the vents in the side of the Switch. 3Com recommends that you pr ovide a minimum of 25mm (1in.) cleara nce. ■ Air temperature ar ound the Switch does not exceed 40 °C (104 ° F).
24 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Figure 5 Fitting a Bracket for Rack-Mounting 3 Insert the two screws and tighten with a suitable screwdriver . Y ou must use the screws supplied wi th the mounting brackets. Damage caused to the unit by using incorrect screws invalidates your warranty .
Placing Units On Top of Each Other 25 Placing Units On T op of Each Other If the Switch units ar e free-standing, up to four units can be placed one on top of the other . If you are mixing a variety of 3Com equipment, the smaller units must be positioned at the top.
26 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH If there is evidence of a problem, see “Solving Problems Indicated by LEDs” on page 54 for a list of suggested solutions. CAUTION: The Switch has no ON/OFF switch; the only method of connecting or disconnecting main s power is by connecting or disconnecting the power cord.
SFP Operation 27 ■ 1000BASE-T SFP transceiver This transceiver uses Category 5 copper cabling with RJ-45 co nnectors and supports segment lengths of up to 100 m (328 ft ). If the SFP transceiver is faulty , it will not operate within the Switch. See “Solving Hardwar e Problems” on page 55 .
28 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Removing an SFP T r ansceiver If you wish to remove the transceiver (it is not necessary to power -down your Switch): 1 Disconnect the cable from the transceiver . 2 Move the wire r elease lever downwards until it is pointing toward you.
Choosing th e Correct Cables 29 CAUTION: If you want to install the Switch usin g a Categor y 5E or Category 6 cable, 3Com recomm ends that you briefly connect the cable to a grounded port before connectin g ne twork equipmen t. If you do not, the cable’ s Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) may damage the Switch's port.

Setting Up Overview This section gives an overview of what you need to do to get yo ur Switch set up and ready for man agement when it is in its default stat e.
Setting Up Overview 35 Figure 11 Initial Switch Setup and Management Flow Diagram CAUTION: T o protect your Switch from unauthorized access, you must change all three default passwords as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to actively manage your Swit ch.
36 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT IP Configuration Y ou can use one of the following methods to allocate IP information to your Switch (essential if you wish to manage your Swit ch across the network).
Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 37 Y ou sho uld use the automatic IP configu ration method if: ■ your network uses DHCP to a llocate IP information, or ■ flexibility is needed.
38 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Connecting to the Console Port T o set up your Switch manually you can make a connection to the console port, (this example describes a loca l connect ion to the console port, rather than one using a modem).
Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 39 2 Open your terminal emulation software and configure the COM port settings to which you have conn ected the cable.
40 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Figure 13 User View Login 3 Enter th e system-view command and Enter . T o confirm that you are in the System View , the following should be displayed: [S4200G] Enter interface vlan 1 and Enter . 4 Enter the IP address and subnet mask for the Sw itch as follows: ip address xxx.
Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 41 Connecting to a Front Panel Port T o set up your Swit ch manually you can , alter natively , make a connection to a front panel port. T o do this you will need an IP address, r efer to “Viewing Automatically Configured IP Information” on page 44 for more information.
42 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT T o connect the cable: a Attach an RJ-45 connector at one en d of the Ethern et cable to the Network Interface Card (NIC) in the workstation. b Connect the RJ-45 connector at the other end of the cable to one of the front panel ports on the Switch.
Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 43 Using Command Line Interface using T elnet 1 T o start a T elnet session to the unit, click Start in Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP . a Click Run . b In the dialogue box that appea rs type the IP address of the unit, that is: Telnet xxx.
44 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT 7 Enter the default gateway for the Switch: ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx. xxx.
Viewing Automaticall y Configured IP Informatio n 45 Connecting to the Console Port Alter natively , you can view the automat ically configu red IP information using the command line interface (CLI) through a connection to the console port. (This example describe s a local connection to the console port, rather than a remote one using a modem.
46 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT 4 Enter display ip interface br to view a summary of allocated IP addresses. The initial set up of your Switch is now complete and the Switch is r ead y for you to set up your chosen man agement method. See “Methods of Managing a Switch” on page 32.
Setting Up Command Line Interface Management using SSH 47 3 Check you can communicate with the Switch by entering a ping command at the DOS prompt in the f ollowing format: c: ping xxx.
48 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT The switch automatically generates a host key pair when it is powered up for the first time, or after any re set to factor y defaults. Host key generation may take a while, during which time SSH connections to the switch will be refused.
Setting Up Web Interface Management 49 Ta b l e 9 Supported Web Browsers and Platforms For the browser to operate the web in terface corr ectly , JavaScript™ and Cascading Style Sheets must be enabled on your browser . The se features are enabled on a browser by default.
50 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Setting Up SNMP Management V1 or V2 Any network management application running the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) can manage a Switch if: ■ The correct Management Information Bases (MIBs) are installed on the management workstation.
Configuration Conversion Utility 51 CAUTION: T o protect your Switch from unauthorized access, you must change all three default passwords as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to actively manage your Switch. T able 10 Default Users Use the admin default user name (no password) to login and carr y out initial Switch setup.
52 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT T o download the CCU package, se lect the CCU link on the CD that accompanies your Switch 4200G. Al ter natively , the CCU download and further information is available at: http://www.3com.com/switchmigration/ 10014914AA.
