14 Camera Features In addition to basic pi cture-taking, the X70 has a variety of sho oting modes to suit different situation s . This section describe s how to make the most of the key feat ures of your camera. To gether with the explanations of came ra operations, it will enable you to enjoy your camera to the full.
15 The X70 comes with a “Face Recognitio n” function that spots the faces in your shot and automatical ly ad justs the focus an d exposure for the faces. It can recognize up to 32 people per shot (*), so it will help you take perfect group shots too.
16 The X70 has a Sh ake Reduction function to reduce camera shake during movie recording (p .146). It also suppo rts the 1280×72 0 HDTV image format so you can view your recordings as stu nning wide-screen movies.

25 A guide for each available button opera tion appears as follows on the display during operation. A histogram shows the brightness distribution of an image. The horizontal axis represents brightness (dark at the left and bright at the right) and the vertical axis represents the number of pixels.
26 When the image is too dark, the part to the left is cut off (dark portions) and when the image is too bright, the part to the right i s cut off (bright portions). Understanding Con trast The graph peaks gradually for images in which contrast is balanced.

28 1 Getting Started Attaching the Lens Cap and Strap Attach the lens cap (O-LC92) and strap (O-ST92) supplied with the camera. 1 Attach the string provided to the lens cap. 2 Pass the end of the strap th rough the strap lug, then secure it on the inside of the clasp.
29 1 Getting Started Powering the Camera Use the supplied battery charger (D -BC92) to charge the suppl ied rechargeable lithium-ion battery (D-LI92) before using it in the camera for the first time or after a long peri od of non-use, or when the [Battery depleted] message appears.

Charge the battery before using it in the camer a for the first t ime. 1 Open the b attery/card co ver. Slide the battery/ card cove r lock lever in the direction of the arrow to open the cover ( 1 ).

33 1 Getting Started Use of the optional AC adapter kit (K-AC64) is recommended if you intend to use the camera for a lon g time or connect it to a computer. 1 Make sure that the ca mera is turned off and open the terminal cover. 2 Connect the DC terminal on the AC ad apter to the camera’s DC input terminal.
34 1 Getting Started Installing the SD Memory Card This camera uses either an SD Memory Card or an SDHC Memory Card. (Both cards are referred to as SD Memory Cards hereafter.) Captured images and sound files are saved on the SD Memory Card if a card is inserted in the camera .
35 1 Getting Started 1 Open the b attery/card co ver. Slide the battery/ card cove r lock lever in the direction of the arrow to open the cover ( 1 ). 2 Insert the SD Memory Card into the SD Memor y Card socket so that th e label is facing toward the f ront of the camera (the side with t he lens).
36 1 Getting Started Precaution s When Usin g an SD M emory Car d • T he SD Memory Card is equipped with a write- protect switch. Setting the switch to LOCK prevents new data from being recorded on the card, the stored data from being deleted, and the card from being formatted by the camera or computer.
37 1 Getting Started The sizes of the reco rded images differ depen ding on the number of recorded pixels of the images, so the numbe r of images that will be saved on an SD Memory Card also differs. Choose the appropriate numbe r of record ed pixels for still pi ctures on the [ A Rec.
38 1 Getting Started Turning the Camera On and Off 1 Remove the lens cap. 2 Press the power switch. The camera turns on and the dis play turns on. When you turn the came ra on, the lens will extend. (The lens wil l not extend if the default set tings have not been configu red.
39 1 Getting Started Use this function when you want to play back images or sound files (voice memo) straigh taway without ta king any picture s. 1 Press the power switch wh ile holding down the Q button. The display t urns on with th e lens retracted and the camera turns on in the playback mode.
40 1 Getting Started Initial Settings The [Language/ ] screen appears when the camera is turned on fo r the first time. Perform the operations in “Setting the Display Language” below to set the language, and in “Setting the Date and Time” (p.44) to set the current date and time.

62 3 Taking Pictures Taking Still Pictures How you hold the camera is important when taking pi ctures. • Hold the camera firmly with both hands. • Press the shutter release button gently wh en taking a picture. Holding the Camera To reduce camera shake, support your b ody or the camera on a solid object such as a table, tree or wall.
